Anyone here enlisted in the Navy or Coast Guard?

I know this is a long shot since 90% of NS is under 18 but what the hell. Ive been looking at the armed forces for awhile and want to get in to do some engineering if possible. (or a pilot) I have looked into the Marines but unfortunately I'm ineligible because of health reasons, and a desk job in the military wouldnt sit well with me. I'm now looking at the Navy and the Coast Guard and would like to know if anyone is enlisted and wants to inform me of their experience before I go to a recruiter.
 
I am joining the US Army but i would be careful about going to a recruiter, they will tell you whatever you want to hear so that you will join and they will get the commission. Also alot of recruiters just plain wont leave you alone. If you truly are interested try and get some solid background intel before going in or theres a chance they could play you for a fool. Well what should I say to you? Military isn't for everyone, its a completely personal decision that cant be changed by my opinions. That being said serving your country is a noble thing.
 
My dad was in the Navy for 8 years. He was first in San Diego, CA., then somewhere on the east coast for a month and then he was in Japan for 3 years. He worked on an aircraft carrier. Serveing your country is a great thing. But if you dont like being so far away from home for so long or 60 foot seas down at the tip of South America, then I would join the Coast Guard. I saw this thread and even though i havent been in the military, my dad has and i though i could help. I my self might go into the coast guard one day, i would like to work in AK.
 
my friend inlisted for a desk job in the military, he was promised a desk job most likely in switzerland or sweeden, nows hes special opps jumping out of helicoptors and planes in the middle east and just left for his 3rd tour, make sure you know what your getting into
 
i think coast gaurd would be pretty sweet to do but i have no past experience with it, also if you coudn't get into the marines for health reasons depending on what they are you might not be able to be a pilot. Again it is really depending on what you health reasons are.
 
Im starting engineering school this year, then going to whatever branch gives me a pilot slot. I say get your degree first, then talk to people. Best bet is to find your USCG and Navy ROTC guys and talk to them, that is if you want to do ROTC. Its the best option if you want a guaranteed slot, but is a lot of work.
 
Did you forget about the Air Force? Most badass branch if you want to be a pilot, best treatment and best equipment (brother is USAF, my dad is 21 years retired USAF, and maybe if im lucky, ill be USAF) But really the Air Force and Navy are on the same level, all have great housing, great training so you wont be stuck looking for a job when you get out, etc.
 
If you're looking into engineering definitely check out the SEE BEEs...they're the engineering branch for the Navy and do some really cool stuff like building bridges in a matter of days...If you weren't able to join the Marines because of some kind of health condition it is probably unlikely that you will be able to become a pilot in either the navy or the CG, but you can always try...for instance, I'm mildly colorblind and can;t pass the intial test for Special Ops or Aviation, however, I can pass a secondary test that they really don't let be readily known...I'm currently in the navy going to school, after I will be going to bootcamp and then OEC to become an officer...I could try to help you out a little more if you have specific questions...As for recruitors, I told them I was color blind...they told me I couldn't be a pilot, then after I scored really high on my ASVAB, and had vision of 20/10 and 20/15 they only then told me I could still become a pilot if I passed a different color test...They don;t tell you, but you can get waivers for ton's of things...
 
if you plan to ever fly anything, you basically have to go to college. In every branch (i believe) in order to fly, you have to be an officer. And to be an officer, you either go through ROTC or go through the OCS program once you're out of college. At least thats how i was told it works. One of my good friends is currently going through it all to fly for the navy.

and as for me, i'm contemplating trying to become an officer in the army in a few years when i'm done with college.
 
In Finland we have partly compulsory military service in The Defence Forces, so i've served there. Of course it's different in the US, but in here there are awfully lot of people who want to become a pilot or special opps. so if it's even close to same as it is in here, you will have to do some serious work to become one and be healthy in every way. It's only a marginal group of people who eventually fly fighters e.g...You gotta have right kind of personality if you wan't to serve. Most of the time it will be just boring routines and discipline but if thats ok you might enjoy.
 
this kind of doesnt sit well with me, no offense to you. while you may dislike that they are part of the government, they are doing what they do to protect YOU and your FREEDOM. So many lives have been sacrificed to allow you the life you live, that you should never tell someone not to join, especially if they want to. I would love to serve my country, and by this time next year, I may be on the path to become an officer.

Both would be great if you want to do something engineering related. My choice would be to apply for an NROTC scholarship and go to a school with an NROTC program, since they pretty much all offer engineering programs. once you graduate, you earn your commision as a naval officer and can then go to flight school to be a pilot or naval flight officer. you can get a guarantee for flight school as long as you meet the requirements. after you serve your commitment, you have a degree and invaluable leadership and work experience.

note: nrotc is still a good option if you dont get a scholarship, you can get a 2 year scholarship partway through college.

Why would you want to join the military to do engineering when you could do a million other things with it to actually benefit mankind rather than promote hate, death and destruction.

largest, yes. best equipment and best training, arguable.

the navy uses equipment that the airforce uses, but not all of it, due to carriers being limited in what they can support.

training wise, most likely equal, but specialized for each branch
 
my cousin is in the navy right now and he loves it. he went to the naval academy in annapolis and now he's the navigator in f-18s (the guy in the backseat of the 2 pilot planes who does all the mathematical stuff because he couldn't quite cut it as a fighter pilot.)

if you decide to talk to a recruiter, be firm. don't let him push you around into doing anything you don't want to. and absolutely do not let him get you to sign some sort of commitment until you are 100% sure you want to.

i personally am thinking about doing army or navy ROTC and going into the rangers or seals. when you do rotc i think you start out as a liiutenant which means, as far as i know, you get to see some action, but are not in as high of risk as an enlisted man.
 
Damn US people getting paid to be in the coastgaurd, the coatguard is always something i wanted to get into because ive been around the ocean my whole life and feel i need to help people out in it in some way, shame in england being in the coastguard is volutary and unpaid.
 
not quite true. most nfo's can cut it as a pilot if the navy would allow them. sometimes they choose nfo as their occupational specialty because the commitment is different, or because they dont have the correct vision.
 
oh i know. i wasn't referring to all of them as a whole, i was just talkng about him specifically. being a fighter pilot was his first choice, but when that didn't work out he became a navigator.
 
Yea but isnt the air force the hardest branch to get into? Dont you have to be like top of your class and shit?
 
By engineering I mainly mean mechanic. I went and talked to a recruiter yesterday and they flat out told me I was ineligible for all branches. Major bummer...
 
You have to be the top of your class for every branch for pilot slot, well maybe except army, im getting calls from them constantly about them wanting me to be a heli pilot. Which I wouldnt mind, but I know my dad would flip.
 
this has nothing to do with the navy or coast guard and im sorry for stealing your thread but,what happens if you dont register for the selective service system? does anyone actually get in trouble for not signing up?
 
Yo my best friend was in 1st Recon, Bravo Co. He was on his second tour from last Oct till this past May. His name is Sgt Taylor Morgan. I think he may be force recon now, but I know its a pretty close community , you know him by any chance? He may be SFC now too or close to it, not sure.

i didn't sign up. in fact, i burned the papers they sent me to do so. about a year and a half later i got a letter in the mail at my college thanking me for signing up.

fucking bastards.

SEABEE here, got thrown into NMCB 1 after A-school. I'm an LSSN(SCW). Currently in Korea. If anyone has any serious questions, hit me up. Shit sounds rough in America. I've been here for 8 months already and after reading the news everyday, it seems like complete chaos in America haha. A month and a half left here till back to good ole miss.
