Anyone heard of granite for top of a box?

i was thinking about that today cause my family is getting a new kitchen. my conclusion was that no matter how well supported i think it wil crack and catch my edge, so i will stick with my lexan
 
i have like 4 11/2 long pieces that are left over from when my parents got there bathroom done over...i just want a box to to fool around on
 
ok i think im just gonna make like a 3 foot long base, 8 inches high?the graite is like a cm thick lay that on top and its like 14 inches length and width per piece sound good or should i just forget it
 
I see a lot of potential for this going wrong. Also for pain, I would say forget about it and invest in some real box making materials, but you seem pretty keen on making this work.
 
my parents wont buy me any of the materials for a real box and i dont have enough money,im only 13 so i dont have a job i wonder if theres anything i could put on top of it to make it stay intact?
 
You know those things that you put under florescent lights? Like those plastic flexy sheets? Well, the back of them is super smooth. They are like $2 a sheet. But a few of those. They will chip alot, but I had it last for the whole season before i had to replace it.

To cut them to size, you can either cut them carefully with a saw, or you can etch the plastic and break it. Use pvc for coping that is just a little bit above the plastic. Use caulk for wood to hold the plastic on. As long as you aren't distastering from really high it will work, and it's cheap.

RESALE, means selling the granite

just do the light thing (great idea btw) it's cheap, and more forgiving on your skis

if you cant sell them, make a rackish type thing to hold the pieces in, like metal around the outside
 
You don't believe me?

We had a decent sized chunk left over from the counter top. Once winter came around it cracked when we got freezing rain.
 
put some steel flush with the top of the granite around the edges so it doesnt chip. it should work though, granite is some really tough stuff.
 
I have two pieces of PVC side by side on a 10'x4' rail it works really well. I don't know why PVC takes so much flame...
 
that would look really cool but it would bereally, really painful to fall on, and it's brittle, so you wouyld probably crack it if you landed hard on it, especially when it's cold. Also it is pretty valuable, and skiing on it would probably reduce the resale value considerably.
 
that would be the way to go, i did what u want to do and i supported it real well, well it got cold out and it pretty much was a pile of rocks after a few days
 
no it will not work. the gloss with come of extremely quickly due to weather and use. Then you will be left with a sharp crumbely rock. Try to resell it.
 
yea fair enough, I believe ya. anything can crack during winter though, like if theres a tiny split and it gets water in it then it freezes the split gets bigger and so on. kinda a vicious cycle.
