Anyone headed to the climate change march in NYC?

i won't be able to make it but the majority of my community organizing/enviro activism class is going. It's going to be the biggest climate march in history, there's sure to be a ton of feels and a fuck ton of fun. really bummed i can't go but if you do i can live vicariously through you!!

I saw a poster for a bus trip to this at my school in Philly. My first thought was that all of the gas burned to transport people from all over the country to this march will do more damage to the environment than the march will be able to offset.

So true...this march wont do shit for awareness. Everyone knows about climate change already. Plus you really think it would have an affect in NYC? I live here and the amount of shit in the air is crazy. It smells like shit everywhere in NYC. Will be just a large gathering of hippy and liberal idiots.

Although I am all about attending events organized by trust fund kids who want to feel important, I unfortunately can't make it.

I get a serious kick out of all the arm chair hippies that attend this shit, "It's like fuck the oil and gas industry for causing climate change" then "who's going to cabo for spring break bitches" the next minute.

good point.

imma drive my car to the airport, fly 5000 miles cross country, rent a car, drive it to the march, and march against co2 emissions! for skiing!

Good thing it's climate change then and not global warming. It's almost like some places are getting cooler.

holy shit so many ignorant fucks im not even gonna try this time... but to anyone who doesn't think it is the the most important issue humanity has ever faced, you are brainwashed.

but good for you OP. unfortunately to see any real changes it would have to be a protest bigger than anything before, and across the whole globe.

and still it woulnt accomplish anything. What the fuck is a big group of people walking together gonna do? Nothing, youre wrong and stupid and Argentina sucks

I'm going to run my generator 1 hour for every post in here. The noise generated will help raise awareness. Everyone join me. IF you don't have one idling a big truck will work.

Let's save the world!

hah i never said it would make a difference. what we have done is irreversible and it will literally take collective action from entire world (not some protest to raise "awareness") to change this process. and unless that is done in the next few years (due to the ~30 yr cause/effect lag), mass extinction will likely occur and far sooner than we can imagine. i may be wrong, but im not stupid enough to want to risk that.

ps. fuck you argentina is great, i wish i was still down there..

You're so funny man. I hope I can be like you one day. You're jokes are original and it's super cool to act like you don't give a shit about the biggest problem facing the earth. Maybe the march won't do anything, thats not the fucking point. The point is that some shit needs to start happening and people need to start doing SOMETHING instead of acting too cool to care.

Keep caring on the internet...youre changing the world one post at a time

I don't need to go to the march anyway. I bought a few hundred dollars worth of carbon offsets at dave matthews in 2008. I'm good for life.

Lol you guys are kinda funny not gonna lie. But the point is that its going to be the biggest protest of all time, they're expecting to have over 100,000 participants and apparently the UN is having a meeting with all of its leaders in New York City that day so this is supposed to spark some kind of change. Also a lot of people are taking initiative to lower their Co2 emissions by taking buses and using other forms of mass transit to get to the city. I know a lot of you are just trolling but we cant really deny the fact that the human race has put quite an effect on the earth. Yeah i'm in favor of making this world a better place but i guess that qualifies me to be a hippy. I mean just think about what the world would be like today if it weren't for the few people that were concerned about our environment in the past.

Global warming and climate change are not interchangeable phrases. The climate is always changing. Randall Carlson on JRE does an amazing job explaining this.

Ad's end at 6:10 and i highly, highly reccomend listening to this. Most interesting few hours of my life. I had to listen a 2nd time a month later to help digest all of the info. He is on the cutting edge of new discoveries that help us understand our past and climate. NOTE: if you take the bible as fact this podcast will scare the fuck out of you :).

Well if the UN is involved you know it's gonna be great.

"we cant really deny the fact that the human race has put quite an effect on the earth"

I agree. That said the modern environmental movement seems to be, fuck the oceans, fuck the trees, fuck the animals, fuck the mountains, but make sure you don't release any C02 while doing it.

It's not like trees help reduce c02 or give us a little oxygen which we dabble in a little bit here and there. But I don't really see any outrage when people cut down a shit ton of trees to build more mini malls and parking lots.

That's what makes it hard for me to take the modern environmental movement seriously.

anyone who thinks climate change is a myth is either a fucking retard or religious quack. The vast majority of science supports it and 97% of scientists think it's real. Denying it won't make it not real.

driving or flying to the climate change march- just help contribute to emit more pollutants and gasses into the atmosphere... if youre going from a distance you best be walking or riding that bike sonny

What does religion have to do with climate change?

But how will traveling to a rally for an issue everyone is already aware of help anything? I doubt a rally, even one with a few hundred thousand people in attendance, is going to make congress say "well shit, apparently this climate change thing is a big deal, let's make some laws"

13137988:Snowtorious_BIG said:

Then what is the point? Why have/attend a protest rally if you have no intention on making change? Seriously, I'm curious what you think the point of having a political rally is besides trying to change something you don't like.

Wow everyone here has such great points. Why stand behind something you believe in and be vocal about it. What does that accomplish? It's not like it raises awareness or shows politicians and others how much support there is for it.

Also, did anyone think about how many people live in the NYC area? You don't need to travel from super far away for there to be a huge turn out.

If it was a "legalize bestiality" rally or something, I'd agree with you, but everyone already knows about climate change, including politicians. I would be shocked if there was a single member of congress or the senate who has never heard of climate change before. A hundred thousand people sounds like a lot, but when you consider that 300,000,000 + live in the united states, it no longer seems that big. And, apart from that, I'm sure members of congress already have the data on the percentage of their constituents who support climate change.

And yet, not shit is getting done about it. That is cool that it is on peoples radar or they know about it, the point of this is to get them to do something about that shit. Considering half of congress has more faith in a god damn book than actual science, I don't trust them to get anything done.

Just came from the march it was pretty tight, there were a fuckton of people in the streets, and I marched next to Jane Goodall and Al Gore for a sec

Oh sweet Al Gore? He's probably the coolest person in the world. Totally completely 100% serious

Right, so why would anyone think that a rally is going to make them start doing something? And if you don't trust congress to get anything done, then, again, what's the point of the rally?

Problem is that most Americans have more immediate, day-to-day problems that they have to worry about and deal with before they can worry about climate change, and members of congress have to worry about those same things if they want to get re-elected.

Pretty large turnout in Barcelona today. Honestly surprised to still see so many ignorant fucks from the US still spouting shit with their thumbs up their asses, good show chaps.

Also, it's pretty ignorant to say that nothing is being done about climate change. Plenty of laws have been passed that are designed to reduce America's carbon footprint, such as the law about all cars having to legally get at least 50 mpg before being sold by 2020, I think. I'm curious what those of you who support the rally, or even went, have any ideas on specifically what you want congress to do, or if this is just another case of people asking for answers from others without really understanding the issue.

Someone please explain to me how climate change is the biggest issue facing mankind lol.

Also, while you're at it explain to me why nearly every major climate model is vastly overestimating warmth already. Co2 continues to rise at an extremely fast rate but the temperature on a global scale has leveled off for nearly 2 decades and the climate models are very far off. hmmm

Sure, the pictures of the Polar bears stuck on a piece of ice are cute but not convincing.

What about how climate scientists have been caught fudging numbers lately?? IPCC scientists of all people!!

What about the urban heat island effect, and how are ASOS sites used for data recording are often in places surrounded by Tarmac, concrete etc? Look at a city on a summer evening compared to a rural area just a few miles away. The temperature will be 5 or so degrees different from the temperature nearer to the paved surfaces where we put our freaking thermometers. It's ridiculous.

Sure, the earth is warming. As a person with a degree in earth science and a focus in atmospheric science I have to be objective and try to look past a lot of the BS.

Polar bears can swim 100 miles of open water. But we should definitely by them floaties because they're all gonna drown if they fall in the water.

At the same time if you watch the day after tomorrow you'll change your mind. We're all going to die and its going to happen soon.

Idk why youve started posting so much lately but I never realized how dumb you are, you're seriously on the wrong side of every argument and genuinely seem mad/unhappy all the time

Lets all travel to the city to march against climate change....because travel isn't like the number one cause of co2 emissions or anything.

I am all for stopping our impact on this world, but holy hell. Everyone seems to be looking for someone else to do something about it.

oh government, oh almighty UN give me the strength to help stop this march of mankind. Do something to end my consumption of fossil fuels.

People hate oil companies, but they fill up their cars everyday. Yell at big coal, but still turn on the lights, use their phones and laptops. Complain that monsanto sucks balls, but still buy their crops.

I am just as guilty as the next, but I do not yell at others for doing the same. If you want to make change, do it yourself. We all need to, every last one, if we want anything to change.

inb4 i get shit on.

Well I don't know how that post came across as unhappy lol... And I've been posting for sever years at a lower rate than ever but do you care to refute my claims instead of just telling me that I'm dumb? It does nothing to substantiate your argument.

Are you implying that we don't need the government to ban things in order to not use them?

It's funny that I admitted the globe is warming and all I did was suggest that it's important to exercise caution when considering the extent and still got jumped on lol. It's literally as neutral a statement as there could be. Weird.

Ps... I just got out of $500 worth of tickets. Rolled a stop sign, didn't have my insurance card or registration and my emissions paperwork didn't go through and the guy told me to have a good night. #farfrommad
