yea, its not 100% yet, but all signs point to a torn/damaged miniscus. im going to see an othopediatrican (sp) in a few days to get solid answers. but anyone ever done it? what was involved with recovery? how long did it take? from what i understand, it involves surgery to remove damaged cartaldige, and thats it, but that worries me, removing it without replacing it. gerh, it sucks. thanks all

ya, i did it two years ago. mine wasnt completely removed just trimmed. recovery was basic phisio, bike riding, and lots of ice. i think it took me 2.5-3 months to be back on snow, but it was just groomers. it probably took me 1.5-2 years for it to feel completely normal and comfortable again. good luck, and if you get the surgery done, stay awake and watch it on the screen, its cool

How bad does your knee feel man? Cause on the 25th of Jan this year I fell and twisted my knee. My Orthopedic doctor said it was an MCL strain and a possible medial meniscal tear, I've had the MRI done and just have to wait to take the film to the doc and have him look at it. Since the fall happened I have since been skiing with a hinged knee brace (for the mcl strain) maybe 5 times so far, my knee feels fine, I'm just curious to see how your knee is feeling for you? After the accident I didn't ski and barely walked for a week and a half, after I saw the doctor I started doing stretches to help my MCL heal and have since started skiiing groomers again.

Oh and I forgot to mention, my doctor said if it's a damaged meniscus to lay off and let it heal on its own which it will, but if it's bad then the surgery has to be done.

my friend completely tore his from the knee cap, and didnt want surgery at all, around 4 months of spinning, and physical therapy, and he was fine.

Last year, I fractured my tibia, forced the bone up through the miniscus, which ruptured it, and blew my MCL. Fortunantly it wasn't as bad as it sounds, and after lots of time off and low impact PT, my knee feels much better, but is noticably weaker, and easier to hurt this year. Best advice is to not rush anything. Listen to ur doc.

Yea i ripped both of mine..along with the ACL and MCL and was out for like 4 months... but really fucked my shit up.. but just for a Tear in your munsicus not that long... hope you get good news.

I tore my ACL and meniscus at once.

With the meniscus...If it's bad, they just take it out entirely, which is a much quicker recovery, but later on in life, it kind of sucks, since the meniscus pads some of the bones in your knee.

If it isn't as serious, they can kind of put it back together/just let it heal on its own. This takes longer to recover...a few months. But its preferable, since once it heals, you are good to go, and don't have to worry about it in 10 years.

I have torn my medial miniscus and ACL before, it took me a couple years to be stomping big hits without pain. It is a shitty thing to happen, because it serves as a delicate gasket between bones, without it your screwed.

wow. ok. sounds all over the place. as for the guy askin about pain, its got a consistant dull pain, not too bad, but it sucks tryin to fall asleep cause its distracting. when i go to fully extend my knee, i can feel a sharp, inward pain on the inside of my knee, right at the joint, as well as a "pressure" in the same spot on the outside of my knee. when i go to hinge my knee past about 90 degrees, there is a widespread pain through the entire front of my knee joint.

also, if you didnt read the other thread, how it happened:

landing jump, ended up slightly backseat, started to wash out. as i was on my butt sliding out, my ski got caught right under the binding, spinning me around, and hyperextending my knee forward pretty good. at first there was serious swelling around the kneecap from it, and thats all i thought it was at first, but after a day or two, i could feel the above mentioned pain, and realized it wasnt as simple as i thought.

as for recovery, i could honestly care less about this season. theres some cool stuff goin on here, but i have plans to spend the summer in NZ, and i want to be 100% for that. i have roughly 3-4 months.

i tore my ACL with both meniscucses so i cant tell u from my experience, but before i was diagnosed with a torn ACL i was told it takes like a few weeks to heel but that could be bs since my docters proved to not be the smartest docter when it comes to physical injury

I tore both meniscus with my ACL and they will either trim it, repair it, or remove it. For me the trimmed one of them, and if they do that, you basically walk out of the hospital and are fine in a week to ski, but the more they trim, the worse it is for the long term. In my case they only trimmed 10% of it, so it should be much of a problem. If its really fucked, they might take it out compleatly = arthritis like hell in the long term, and then they can try to repair it. They did that for the second meniscus i tore, and it is longer short term recovery, all depending on how bad it was. For me I can't really say how long it was because it was at the same time as my acl, but I had my zimmer(knee brace) for alot longer because of the meniscus after surgery, and my doctor said no squats for 4 months because he wanted me to wait 4 months for it to fully heal but apparently hes really conservative, he also didnt want me to ski for 9 months for my acl...

i did the same thing as you. same landing. same symptoms. i needed surgery to repair it (sew it up) and that took about 4-6 months at worst. unfortunately i pushed it too hard in rehab with running and stuff and tore it again. this time they removed part of it and you are back in full in like a monthish. basically rehab is key. i had the worst possible tear though. removing it is shorter recovery but arthritus later in life. if they have a chance to repair, then they will do that

well i dotn know if you did but i had to take a class on medical shit and we covered this but it depends cuz there r 3 types ive heard of theyre a bucket handle tear, a transverse, and a flap tear. also it depends how badly it tears and what type it is. If it is serious enough and teh doctor doesnt think it will heal on its own they can do arthroscopic surgery which isnt nearly as bad and regular surgery cuz its liek they barely cut u open but u stil have to do physical therapy and wear a brace

East Coast - It sounds like you definately did something. I have had my knee done 2x (microperf and meniscus repair, Acl). The most important thing is to get a kick ass dr. I live in Park City and Cooley is pretty much considered to be the man. He did tiger woods. I have seen people that have gone to quacks that have really fucked up their patients. Make sure your doc is not a goofball and he has done his share of sports related knees not just 50 year old over weight women.

good luck with your recovery
