Anyone else not looking forward to winter?

I don’t mean for my title to trigger anyone and I usually keep my glass half full as this an industry that thrives off of optimism, but for the first time in my life I’m not looking forward to winter. There’s so much uncertainty about the season ahead that I haven’t felt the stoke that I normally start to feel around this time of the year. Aside from the inevitable protocols that have been put in place, as a resort employee I’m going to be dealing with a greater than usual number of assholes as a result of this new normal. I could do without the amenities and accommodations that most guests prioritize when planning a ski vacation, but I’m afraid of loosing a lot of my employee perks which will make my job less enjoyable and appealing. We price gouged the shit out of our tickets and passes compared to last year in an attempt to keep people out (and to make up for financial loss) which we’re certainly going to receive some backlash for, but at the same time we still want visitors to come so it’s a double edge sword. Our CEO just resigned so everyone is on the edge of their seats hoping that they won’t loose their jobs or that we won’t sell out to “Big Skiing.” On top of that, I won’t get to ski nearly as much as I’ve had these last few seasons since I won’t be allowed to keep my gear in the office like I normally am. And if we have to put a cap on how many skiers we can have on the mountain per day it’ll be even worse.

I don’t fear COVID-19 to the point where it keeps me in my shell and holds me back from living my life, I’ve been getting outside a lot and even got the chance to travel to Alaska for a bit before returning to work this past week. But living in a destination resort town we get a lot of arrogant assholes from far and wide who flock into town and have zero respect for the locals or community as a whole. We’ve already had a fair share of them this summer, I’m talking guests who are throwing food and drinks at servers over their refusal to comply with the mask ordinance. All it takes is one individual to ruin it for everyone and I fear in the winter it’s only going to get worse. At this point I just hope that we have a decent snow year and are able to make it through the season in peace without any outbreaks. I hope I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Thoughts?

I feel you. I work in a chalet and I wouldn't be surprised if my resort shut down the food court because of covid, thus putting me out of a job. But im 18 now so I can coach the freestyle team which is hopefully something I could fall back on if the food courts do close.

TLDR OP. I want summer to last forever since it has been some super fun skiing this year but face it there has been a major melt out and it was like 100 degrees a few days ago. If it doesn't snow soon it is going to be a scrappy scrapey fall for skiing. Report back in February and March once we actually have a base and a nice cold system moving in and I bet anything you will be glad it is winter

reporting from NY, i hope we get enough snow for urban and touring.

I doubt these resorts can break even with social distancing, can you imagine the lift-lines.

i feel you. i haven't even purchased a pass for this coming winter because i have no idea what is going to happen. for now, just enjoying the biking!

I can't wait for winter. Summers too hot, theres no skiing where I'm at and the waves suck. Maybe I'm just becoming more grumpy

i have had a rollercoaster of emotions thinking about winter. this spring i was so stoked for the next winter, but most of summer i have been sorta burned out on skiing, with the occasional spike of joy for skiing. i have recently not gotten into any schools that i want to, and started looking for alternatives. i found a open spot at a ski school kinda thing (idk if this thing even exist in the US) you really just pay a fuck ton of money to live a year at a different place, ski the whole winter, meet lots of new friends and have fun. you also get a great amount of study points. and this have rekindled my stoke for the season.

Hope things turn out good for you. it might be a sucky season, but there will be more seasons after that (hopefully without covid)

I just bought my season pass today. They dropped the price for returning guests and offered 2 50%off tickets for others. There is free Covid assurance that comes with that too. Its a good deal.

I dont spend any time at the lodge except for putting on my boots or taking a dump, so it doesnt worry me in the least. I just hope tourists stay home so the lift lines stay short

Bought my pass but I’m fully expecting that I’ll spend most my time touring. Might need a pow touring setup. Bent 120 maybe...

Realistically Im actually pretty concerned about Jerry's buying skins and a beacon and thinking this is the year they are going to head to the backcountry without knowing what they are doing. Especially in Utah, every year they have incidents with avvy's and its going to be a lot worse this year with everyone avoiding resorts.

My mood reaches a low about this time every year even in a normal year. It's been so long without skiing. Definitely not feeling so hot right now this year

I have a feeling lift lines are going to be long. Is someone is skiing by themselves, do they get the entire gondola to themselves? 2 singles on a quad? With so many more people getting outside hiking and getting into mountain biking, i could see an increase of people in the mountains skiing this year.

If you're lucky enough to have your home mountain that normally has small lift lines you'll be fine. If you live by an Epic/IKON destination, I feel sorry if the ski traffic is high cuz lines will be hella bad. Or maybe the skier visits will be down and it will even out

Judging by how lift bike parks are running I think winter will be business as usual for the most part.

I’m curios to see how resorts handle holiday crowds but I usually don’t go out then anyways

This has been a rough one for me. I have some existing health issues that make covid a potential death sentence to me. Pretty much have resigned to having to take this winter off.

My friend told me last night that he heard a rumor that WH2O might only sell seasons pass's this year and not sell any day tickets.

I have also heard that the cat/heli operations are still trying to figure out if they will even open this year. I kinda hope they don't because that would make for the best sled ski winter of all time. I assume they will be making their decision soon enough.

Not super stoked. Unless a miracle happens, I’ll be stuck in Ontario with a blown knee this winter. No fuckin jobs around here right now, and got shafted by the Canadian and US stimulus checks, so no money for a move. Life’s a bitch lads.

Rumor had it that whitewater was only open for locals... lots of them are going around.

I hope it refocuses the industry, skiing, mountain town areas, and the entire landscape of what we know. People who live locally and love to visit their favorite ski areas and people who spend money on vacations can co-exist and can be valued as the same but unfortunately the industry just wants to keep pricing more and more people out, pushing them away from mountains due to communities bending over to them, and somethings gotta give.

I bought my pass early hoping best case scenario being a passholders only type season but for now I'm too stoked on summer to dwell on winter.

Both make for super season. Not sure how a ski resort could even operate like that though. I doubt that's true.
