Anyone else miss Pettits skiing ?

I understand that he wants to try new things etc. But his segments were always fire, his skis with k2 even better and he is one of the skiers that made me drop ski racing

yeah watching all his shit from like 8 or 9 years ago is still mindblowing, definitely one of my favorite skiers growing up. I can't really name anyone who skied like him

Guy would switch cork 5 from like 25 feet up to a steep ass pow landing, his segments were both insane and humorous, now hes just this snowboarder guy.

i think it's weird and i really don't get it, but he's free to do whatever makes him happy.

what i don't get is the situation with money etc. his sponsors set up contracts with him because he's a top shelf skier, not a pretty good snowboarder. does he still have some or all of them?

He still skis on one ski and two. K2 dropped him a while ago. Think he’s just soul skiing for a bit. I bet he puts out some content for his fans at some point.

The Way I See It opening segment will forever be the segment that changed how I wanted to ski. Sean can live his life however he wants, snowboarding is probably keeping him inspired, which is awesome for him and for both sports.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss watching him crush everything in sight on 2 skis though.

He was on the Powell movement podcast and said he still has most of his sponsors and has special arrangements with them

interesting! thanks for the response.

good for him, i'll miss seeing him stomp 3s off massive cliffs and shit but he's under no obligation to risk his life for our viewing pleasure haha

It’s really unfortunate. There is no one that skied like him in his prime. His decisions are his decisions and he is entitled to have them but I will def miss him on skis. His K2 sigs are dope af...I own a pair. The graphics are so sick and the skis themselves are wicked good in pow.

It’s vids like his that get me thru summer ?, skiing , comedy , good music , would love to see more but best to him in all endeavors

huh, what? K2 did not drop him, he is still on contract with them until at least next winter.

Thought he got cut when they dropped Morrison and the others but I stand corrected.

He still skis whenever he has too, I think.

But his instagram feeds being as successful as they are, his K2 sponsorship is pretty good for snowboarding too. So I think it works for both parties for now.

He's just living the dream out in whis surrounded by friends and being modest about everything. Don't worry ladies and gents, he's still got that Candide flow when he hops on skis.

Stoked to see threads like this pop up.

I agree.

Most here will be too young to remember Jonny Moseley, although you have all (I really fucking hope) heard of him, but he seemed to step down early too. Moseley won gold in 1998 and gave credibility to the xgames and other park contests. He was also one of the best big mountain skiers in the world, his segment in TGR's the Realm still stands out. He mixes it up with Jeremy Jones and Jeremy Nobis and holds his own. He was probably the best all-around skier in the world around 99-02, no one could ski big mountain, park, AND dominate an olympic discipline. I urge all of you to watch his segments in the Realm and Ski Movie 1. Then in 2002 he did something better than win a gold, he changed the sport. His dinner roll changed bump skiing forever, even if he did not win gold. By 2006 ALL the bump skiers were doing 720 rotations, the judges were just too slow to catch up.

Then he seemed to quit. He had a couple of small film parts, just a few shots, but he pulled away from the industry. He was huge in 2002, he probably could have been Candide before Candide, just making his own signature films. He really was up there with McConkey, Seth and Kreitler as the absolute best at that point, but he walked away.

I was really bummed, but in a sense I can understand it. Skiing lines the way he did in AK in the Realm is putting your body, and your life, on the line. Doing the kind of park tricks he was doing can also leave one paralyzed. He had won gold, legitimized park contests in the (previously blind) eyes of many, put together INSANE big mountain segments, and made lots of money. In a sense I can see him deciding he wanted to do something different and not risk his life anymore. Like I said, it does suck for people like us, people who wanted to see him get film parts every year, but he accomplished more in skiing than just about anyone ever, it makes sense to walk away with lots of money while still healthy. He is probably one of the top 5 skiers to ever step on the planet, and he was HUGE for the industry back in the day.

So yes, I am really bummed Moseley did not want to film AK segments for the rest of his life, but I can understand the decision. The same might be true with Sean Petit, he absolutely put his life on the line with those 720s off of AK cliffs, I can see him wanting to be able to walk when he is 50, or walk away with fewer than 10 knee surgeries.

If you can find the Realm, watch his segment. He skis a first descent called Thumbnail which would stand up today. He skis other lines, does backflips off AK cliffs, it really is crazy.

yeah dude moseley is somehow kind of an underrated skier in some ways, he was really really good

plus, he asked the world what everyone was thinking: what if it snowed in san francisco?

I know exactly what you are talking about, have seen that exact segment not too long ago, and have to say that it’s true, still as good as today.

I started the thread because of the great skier Sean is, and as he said “I love to make things flow “ so I guess he’s flowing into a new chapter of his life. Big up

Oh fuck yeah, this is one of my all time favorite segments!! I can't remember what it's from if you know plz hmu. But the drop off the top of the tree from keep your tips up and the landing at 6:30 oh my god.

that's from Masquerade by super proof i think. and yeah some seriously sick shit in there

top 5 favorite skiers in my book too.

thread made me wonder: was his switch to snowboarding because he burned out on skiing/likes boarding more, or because he fucked his ankle too badly to stuff into a ski boot? would be interested to know the motivation behind the switch

I don’t think he burned out in terms of skills or body, by the end of it it looked like he just wanted to do something new

Special arrangements = paycut

I see him up at the local hill sometimes, riding with pro snowboarders and going as big as the Olympic/Oakley/Redbull dudes that sometimes join him, all vibing off each other and clearly having tons of fun.

Whatever the reason, it seems like a rad time and I'm stoked to see it to be honest.

I actually only started following him on insta once I saw that he was posting dope local cuts on his snowboard - so many pro skiers have to save the best shots and be kind of invisible through the year. His snowboarding stuff has this everyday, playful appeal while still being stupidly upper-echelon.

That said, watching him ski also gets me so stoked. Talented dude for sure.

Heard somewhere that he always sorta did both but sorta preferred boarding, so now that he has the opportunity he mostly boards

Guy definitely is sending on the board now, and tbh pow boarding looks almost as fun as pow skiing so I cant blame him, if he sucked at snowboarding it's one thing but seeing that he can ride a board well is another. However I'd love to see him chunce again on skis, markus eder is the only guy I can think of that sends like him, outside of FWT comps.

Safe to say he mastered the art of skiing. Decided to snowboard to switch things up and keep that progressive spirit going on inside of him. Also snowboarding is a lot easier on the knees and ankles so it was a good recovery sport that later turned into a new passion. He also lives with a couple of the "Man Boys" - local legendary snowboard crew in whis.

He’s probably accomplished all he wants to, at this point in his career it’s not like he’s looking to do more, hard for us “common folk” to understand, but at his level he was probably getting bored.

Secondly, and this prob had a bit to do with getting started on snowboarding. The guy uses a sled lots, never tours and sled skiing is a bitch switching out boots during the day, prob started bringing a snowboard when the skiing wasn’t his level just because he didn’t need to switch boots?

Just a thoughy

Damn that's sick. You should post a pic. I still have the all red ones from like 4 seasons ago. Possibly favorite ski ever.

Whenever I think of Sean I imagine he gets out of bed every morning surrounded by women like in the videos.

but I do miss his skiing a lot.
