some other stuff that i dont remember

Its going to be sick in the olympics....
all hotels are booked by media people watching events...
So hardly any tourists... no day parking for the city folk....
Mountains are going to be dead for shredding... and most of the mountain is staying open

Village is going to be a shit show though....
Thank god i live down in Creekside.

wish i was going... had a place to stay in whistler village and I was going to volunteer but you had to be 19 by September, and I'm only 18... don't have any tickets for any events. how did you get your hands on so many tickets? want to sell some hockey tickets? pm me if you do!

Or up to whistler. It's funny none of the locals want to be here during the Olympics, we rather watch it on tv and go ski somewhere else

I'm gonna go to Mammoth and shred, UBC has a 2 week reading week this year for the olympics

Hitting up Silverstar instead during reading week (coordinated with Olympics). Whis is gonna be nuts.

dude

creekside is gonna be a shit show. its closed to the public unless you have a ticket/live there. the gondola is closed, you cant go anywhere without security, and have fun trying to get to the village! the village wont be half bad. the worst part will be the upper village. where the parking lots are.

i am working in athletes housing for the olympics through a paid student work term. i am very stoked.

My family is trying to set a trip up from toronto but there so pissed about the busing and how expensive it is. They don't even let you stay after the event to chill in whistler. I still really want to go but it does seem like a total mess.

I'm planning on staying here / in whistler for a week, then going somewhere like revelstoke to ski for my 2nd week of the reading break.

Do up Revelstoke man. Such a nice mountain, but unless you've never been there you already know that.

If I pass all my courses this semester, and actually get reading week off then I'll be there. We're flying to squamish, gonna ski Revvy a couple days. Might fly back over to Vancouver to see some events, maybe go to whistler too.

Im thinking chill out in van for one week, why not right the only time I'll experience the olympics? ANd then peace out to Banff or something and ski it up.

seeing as i live in west van/ whistler yea i will be there, dunno if i have tickets to anything though

i'm gonna be there... i'm coming up from seattle, and i'm in whistler fairly often
my aunt called and said she had 4 tickets we could get for free for luge and x-c skiing, so my family said fuck it, let's go. but, my bro is gonna be in india for a computer donating trip which sucks, but i get to bring a friend...

long story short, i'll be there

just think about all the money the canadian govt is spending on the olympics that they could have just spent on welfare projects.

just think about how the olympics are being hosted on stolen indigenous land.

I'm by no means super pro olympics, they are way over done and way too commercial. But compared to the last 5 olympics vancouver will be very modest. As for welfare, aren't they donating the athlete villages for affordable living? and how many jobs has the olympics created in a recession?

And as for stolen land, well our entire nation is on stole land. I'm not justifying that. But its not like British colonialist are hosting the games I realize that some of it is on land that has some connection to the aboriginals of Vancouver. . Might be the Squamish people? But I'm pretty sure their ancestors would be ok with a global celebration of sports with other nations. Ever heard of a potlache? The Haida and many other western North Americans part-took in them, were their fundamentals that different from the Olympics? What about the Hopi? Iroquois? Did they not travel to part in sporting competitions with each other, Lacross? Katchi (I think) running ( I realize neither o these groups are near Vancouver)? Didn't indigeous people from all over BC come to fort Victoria to meet, trade and celebrate?

Again the Olympics are way over done and super commercial and should be downscaled. And not to sound super cheezy but myself I remember watching them as a kid, and it was life changing. Whats so bad about showing what hard work can do? Shame on those foolish people for having a dream!

I get what you're saying. But hating on the Olympics in Vancouver has the biggest bandwagon, which maybe 25% can actually back their shit up. The olympics will happen, and really, just make the best of it, maybe you'll have fun?

Personally, I think the good out weighs the bad. Feel free to correct me on anything of what I said I haven't but much thought in it.

I need to go study,

I know, I was in the raffle and was in the raffle to carry the torch. how did you get so many tickets though, berely anybody I know got max 4 tickets to some minor events... that's sweet for you though, no hate

this is a good point. look at beijing. how much money they didn't need to spend.

the vancouver housing, if i am not mistaken, is going up as normal waterfront property in Vancouver because it is one of the last lots that can be built on the waterfront. in whistler the athletes housing has been sold off as affordable housing (3 bedroom townhouse - $474000) and they are so nice and it would be cool to live there.

as for jobs yes, it has made a bunch, but where do all these people who have jobs go after? most of vanocs employees contract from other companies - vanoc themselves don't employ that many people, but still. there will be a significant amount of people without jobs.

oh well, its gonna be an exciting time regardless.

its sucks for all the local because they have to park there car at squamish and then take a bus into whistler and vis versa back if you are travelling to whistler from van

I've got some prelim mens hockey, curling with canada/china and some random ass longtrack speed skating. I'm stoked on the speedskating 'cause I have no idea what's in store.

also plan on shredding grouse as much as possible seeing as it'll be open 24hrs.

Ah shit really? I thought the village in van was supposed to be affordable housing. Thats lame.

And as for the jobs, no permanent jobs true. But really it kinda worked as a stimulus package, short-term employment, increased labour and industry and will most likely bring money into BC. Like I think Salt Lake City as more or less paid their olympics off, I could be wrong though

anyone who lives in whistler, or has a street address, gets issued two parking passes, and with those you can drive the highway during the main times (6am-6pm), otherwise you have to take the bus or travel outside of those times.

and i am pretty sure the greyhound isn't going to be running either. they want to make sure that people who are going up are going to be staying over night or gonna be there really early because you have to be past brackendale before 6am.

its gonna be interesting.

Affordable waterfront housing in downtown vancouver? For realz?

Anywhere else in the city, but not on downtown waterfront property, that's financial suicide, that land is worth waaaaay too much, and it's a prime location. At least we can re-coup some costs from it.

The Whistler athletes village IS affordable housing, it's also 15-20 minutes from the main village and built on the old town dump.

def going have tickets to the womans semi final hockey of all things haha. how can you not go if you live here? ya might be busy and whatever but shit olympics in Cananda, let alone BC? correct me if im wrong but that doesnt happen to often
