Anyone Do MMA?

Im starting up this coming week mostly to just get a kickass workout before lacrosse starts. Just wondering if any of you have any knowledge as to what im getting myself into.

the striking practice isnt too bad.. the grappling practice will run you ragged and you will be sore as hell like when you first started skiing or doing lacrosse.

of course the reason i think striking practice is easy is because im good at it and the guy i practice with isnt that great at Muay Thai yet. he is a grecco roman wrestler so thats why the grappling probably wears me out.

Well i just googled an MMA gym in my area and read up on a bunch. One of the gyms is taught by a bunch of guys who trained under some UFC champion and offered a private and group lesson for free before you even sign up for a class so i just signed up for that. Its brazilian ju jitzu some Muay Thai and submission wrestling. Just wondering if im ganna go in there an be puking after a workout. Ive been playing summer lacrosse all summer so im in decent shape but no were near good shape.

unless you pig out at a Buffet and drink like 2 gallons of water you probably wont be puking during the workout BUT, the next day you will feel like you cant move since its Jiu Jitsu and submission stuff.

if they did Judo or straight freestyle/mat wrestling you will be sore as hell right after the practice and a little sore the next day but not as bad as after jiu jitsu.

no way, I was looking for mma gyms close to my school (rpi) and found this one too. I was considering doing it in the spring as im really busy in the fall. If you take a class there let me know how it is, from what i've heard any mma is pretty intense and a good workout

im going to HVCC this semester. But i just sent in a form so i should have my first private lesson sometime this upcoming week. Ill let ya know how it is

Alright so here is the deal. With my experience in MMA, i find wrestling practice the hardest on your overall cardio, but muay thai the hardest on your body overall. Some muay thai gyms will have you go real hard against your sparring partner and hold nothing back. But in wrestling, we ran more than the track team did. And they would create a line and make a 135 lber *Me* wrestle the whole team, from 98 lbs all the way up to our heavyweights that can reach 265 lbs just to catch our weight class, i was 6 lbs over, and lost the weight in a 2 hour practice. But jui jitsue really can wear you down if your out of shape, your muscles will feel like jello because your constantly pushing up on your opponent trying to find your next opening.

i do judo and aikido and that can really screw up your breathing because of constantly getting the wind knocked out of you.

well the gyms website described their MMA lessons as Muay Thai, Brazilian Ju Jitzu and submission wrestling so i guess im ganna be dead tired for the next couple of weeks haha

unless you are going to the Chute Boxx Academy in Brazil there is not THAT much of a risk that you will be stuck in the hospital.... you will need a ton of ice though. buy stock in ice.

haha, i believe it. You hit the mat HARD in both of those arts. Im really interested in Judo but there are no strictly judo gyms in my area. But at my overall MMA school, we often will learn new hip toss's and just judo throws in general. And i have gotten the wind knocked out of me once or twice.

how quickly do you pick things up? like would you be able to spar in like a months work of workouts or does it take mad long to get at a competitive level

well, my gf is a 3 degree judo black belt and at school i go with her to the school club to learn, as well as the aikido club THEN take it to the MMA sparring matches with my buddy who is a wrestler and use the throws on him and he learns how to use them cause he picks stuff up really fast and then uses it on me... the bastard. i do have a 6 inch reach advantage on him though.... silly guy who is two weightclasses below me and kinda short... HA

i started as nothing more than a grappling partner. meaning, my friend would try to take me down either by shooting or wrestling throws/slams and i would try to not let him... or we would switch roles... then i decided to pick it up and have a 2-0 amateur record now... beating the shit out of stupid frat boys...

Well, if your in a striking class, they will have you sparring definetly before a month lol. But i wouldnt join a local promotion after 1 month of training, there is just so much to learn in MMA..you cant pick it up in a month lol. After 4 solid months you should be set to step into the ring. This is only because local shows normaly have just people off the street who know nothing about the game and just take a beating for some money. But once your reach a higher level organization you will start facing some competetion, but i would recomend getting 2 or 3 fights in just to get the feel of fighting and see if you like it or not.

one thing to add... when/if you decide to fight in a local promotion... dont use white shorts... goddamn, i bought white fight shorts and now they are a coppery brown so i think ill have to throw them away... hit a guy in the forehead with an elbow, he started bleeding, then i choked him out with a triangle but he refused to tap so i had to make him pass out.

no, im calling the guys i fought stupid frat boys... kept telling me that my rather hot gf was only with me cause she was a whore (im a bit on the tubby side).... they got theirs though... muscle mass doesnt equal instant win in a mma fight.

to be honest, i wasnt really paying attention to your name....

i did this in both my fights against two different idiot frat guys.... the first one i didnt finish the fight though cause i wanted him to suffer so i cut him with an elbow and then just did light jabs and hooks for another round then knocked him out with a knee in the second round. the second fight i wanted to prove how much of an idiot non intelligent douche the guy was so i cut him and then choked him out with a triangle.

lol, i have Thiago Alves fight shorts, but those are just my training shorts. i only got a boody nose on them but i landed in the gray area. And my actual fight shorts are black so i dont have to worry. But you should see one of my tapout shirts from one of my street fights *I actually lost it*.....the dumbass fucking ground and pounded the fuck out of the back of my head so the back of my white tapout shirt is now the back of my brownish copperish orangish tapout shirt.

mine were semi custom made sprawl shorts that had the old school japanese rising sun on the left leg stretching the rays of the sun across the entire front of the shorts with the same thing on the back... they are now hanging in my room... i may frame them, dont know yet...

now i use black ones with the same sun thing in them.

This was during high school. It was one of those stupid things that just come up. Everybody in my school knew that he was a Golden Gloves champ and i was in wrestling and muay thai at the time. So everybody wanted to see this fight happen at a party, so my friend happened to have 2 pair of grappling gloves. So he tossed them to us and we are both not the type to pass up a fight, so we touched gloves and came out swining. I threw a inside leg kick and it didnt phase this kid. So then i through a straight right and it seemed to have done some damage. Then he came in with a combo of a left jab, right hook, then right uppercut...the uppercut hurt me bad, but he didnt capitalize on it so i just moved back and recooped. Then i came back with a head kicked with rocked him pretty bad so i went in for the kill and he landed a really bad right hook right on my jaw wich sent me on my knees, and i went for a take down, but he had a good sprawl going so he sent me on my back, and i rolled onto my stomach...thats when he went for the back of my head....and then my friend came in and stopped him.

ok, this is a bit... off topic sort of but still on topic, damn, thats confusing... i do mma at college so we can use a slight sort of walk out song dealio and well, im using this right now:

any opinions... and if it matters my nickname for fighting is "shinigami"... essentially a japanese version of the grim reaper.

i was thinking that since it just sounds cool and because the GnR one takes too long to get to the good stuff (meaning axl screaming and the guitars)

I didnt listen to your songs posted above, but i know One Day by Matisyahua. But i suggest "tearz - Wu Tang" or "Cant be touched - Roy Jones Jr" those are my fav.
