Hey I was just wondering if anybody on here has used the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM. I've wanted to buy it for a while and finally have the funds but I've read mixed reviews about it and if you or somebody that you know has used it please let me know what you/they think of it. Thanks a lot!

And if you don't know what I'm talking about I'm sorry to confuse you.

well....ft is an L series, USM, and its a prime lens, then i would assume it is great. sorry, i havent had the opportunity to shoot on that lens, but prime lenses are always (well, almost always) sharper.

The reason I asked was because I read a review that said it was surprisingly unsharp around the edges of the frame. I've really looked into it in the past two weeks and placed my order on Saturday, should be here today.

Thanks for trying to help though, I appreciate it.

that depends on what camera they were using. if they were using a Rebel XT, let it be known that the mini sensor on it isn't well suited for wide angle lenses - if you compare the mirror size on the XT to, say a Mark II, you'll see the XT mirror is a lot smaller, so it's not going to pick everything up on the wide aspect.

the reviewer might have also been shooting into his light source without a lens hood, which can cause blurring with wide angle lenses.

I am aware of sensor crop, and I thank you for offering that information in case I wasn't.

However in general, most lenses lose sharpness toward the edge of the full frame (especially wide angles and even more especially so this lens, as seen in the MTF chart below), so in one review I read (which was in fact performed with a Canon Rebel XT), it was noted that the lens was surprisingly unsharp in the corners until stopped down to f/5.6 I believe - which was somewhat unassuring since it should perform even better on an APS-C size sensor due to the sweet spot effect, and also considering the lens' price tag.

See the MTF chart on Canon's website, which will hopefully show up below:

Thanks for your help though and if you are ever interested in this lens later down the road feel free to ask me what I think of it as it should be arriving today.
