To be quite honest it seems like there are no good new movies. Most storylines seemed like they are almost copied verbatim from another movie or at least they used the same concept. I just got done watching "Donnie Darko" and it occurred to me that films these days don't seem to have the capacity to compare to the films of the past. There are a few exceptions here and there, but for the most part I find it troubling to find anything to watch thats been made recently, but I guess thats why I like being outside.

I kind of agree with you, but Donnie Darko is definitely a good movie in my book. What didn't you like about it?

sorry if I was unclear. Donnie Darko is an example of a good movie with an original and complicated story plot.

Ohhhhhhhhh, I totally messed that up, I wasn't sure which way you were arguing on Donnie Darko. But as Carleton mentioned, there are a fair share of good movies that were produced back in the day, just as today. Thing's have changed, but not all that much.

well once you simplify it down to that......
the point I was trying to make is that there have been basically no new concepts introduced in movies.
I guess having a more complicated discussion is kind of hard on NSG but I did have hopes

you watched donnie darko and it blew your mind, and apparently have only watched box office smashes since. didn't really seem like too great of a set up for a real conversation about film

there's money in shit movies that they can pump out a dime a dozen, but there's still people out there making fantastic movies, and there's still people trying new things.for some examples off the top of my head: let the right one in, black swan, even the fantastic mr. fox. just because there's shitty movies doesn't mean there aren't people who still love making film and who are fucking good at it, it just means you need to watch a lot of shitty trailers.

deal with it.

wow all I has to do is say your point is very small and I can get an actual discussion!
It didn't necessarily blow my mind, I've seen it many times and still enjoy it and it simply occurred to me there haven't been many movies that have caught my attention like that made recently.
It just seems that anything recently lacks a certain complexity that seems to be forgotten. Black Swan is an example of one of the exceptions. But I feel as if we've hit a slump in the creativity of film. "True Grit" was a giant hit and won a shit ton of awards but it was a remake of film done over 40 years ago.

not sure how that one works
It's kinda like saying you prefer classic rock over anything recent.... so you like older arts.... not undrground....
your logic seems fucked to me anyways

Donnie Darko fucking sucks. Plus it was made in 2001 which kinda makes it a modern movie, especially when you group it with Blazing Saddles from 1974. Your thoughts are irrelevant and stupid. Just go look for good movies, there are TONS of fucking amazing movies made in the last 10 years

a) true grit won i think 1 actual award. it was a remake, and a good one, so what, they've remade movies since the 40s. half of the movies ever made (hyperbole) have been based off shakespeare. they remade movies just as often in 2001 as they do now.

b) i'll name movies with original ideas and plotlines from the years 2010 and 11 (not even a full year) and you do the same with movies from the years 2000 and 2001. i bet our lists will be similar in size, depending on who's lazier.

melancholia - end of the world drama coming up focusing on relationships rather than explosions

black swan - fucked

inception - say what you want, it was a novel idea

black knight - new take on the superhero genre for sure

scott pilgrim, kick-ass - same deal

300 - landmark in visual effects for an action movie

catfish - explored pure social network relationships and deception

that's where my laziness took me

Hahahaahah. That movie was Pocahontas on steroids.

But seriously there are still really good movies that have been produced in the past 10 years. I just watched "The Departed" a couple days ago. Made in 2004 or something and that blew my mind it was so good. So many good actors.
