Anybody attend University of Minnesota - Rochester?

I am going to be a senior in high school this year and looking to go there for undergrad (pre-med route).

Anybody go there? I really want to attend, but there are no ski places in Rochester...

want to know what you guys (if any) do. I was thinking Welch? How far could it be, a hour? But I'm excited to attend but I don't want to give up skiing for 4 years :(

Ah! right up my alley.

I live in Rochester.

First off, I hate roch, most do, and you will learn to also, with time.

DO NOT FUCKING GO TO WELCH!!!!!!!

It's the shittiest resort in MN. No park. Asshole employees. Gaper city. Asshole parents. You get the idea.

Pay a little more for gas and such and just go to Afton. My buddies and I all will go to Afton this season, with so many new improvements in the works.

But, Rochester is basically boring though. O.K. skatepark, kinda sketch (don't know about any other skateparks though, so I might be wrong) For freestyle skiing, there's a small group. Snowboarding is whack, no one is very good, the good ones ride with us skiers. I think drugs are easily accessible, but I don't do them so I wouldn't know.

That's all I can think of right now. Any questions PM me. I'm a junior so I can't help as much but yeah.

Damn, so you'll be a senior when I'm a freshman...

Hopefully I'll be able to find some people to ski with! And alright, thanks for the heads up on Welch.. I've been there a few times, but not enough to judge it truly. And yeah Afton is the shit, I just wasn't sure how much farther it was.

I live in Rochester & would echo the first poster... stay away from Welch. I'm getting a pass at Coffee Mill this year, it's only forty minutes out of the city. It's got some fun freeriding stuff and a little rope-tow park that's maintained by an obsessed snowboarder, so it's always changing & incorporates some weird features. Plus it's the most civilized rope tow I've found and everyone there seems to have a great attitude.

Otherwise I'll be taking trips up to the cities to shred Hyland, Troll, ect.. most everywhere in the cities has fun park shit but is fairly worthless for cruising around. Afton is cool in that regard, but I'd still take Coffee Mill or Mount LaCrosse for 'skiing skiing' any day.

And we should all get together and hit some features in the city this year.

Yeah dude, I'll be up there next year hopefully, and I'd be down for some urban. Also, Mt Lax is my home moutnain right now.

And yeah I've skied Coffee Mill before, pretty fun little terrain park. I'd be interested in getting a group together if we all got a pass to the same place next season (2014-2015 winter.)

And yeah we could make trips to Hyland and Troll. Their parks are nice for what they are

No, when i get home in a couple days i'll look for a pic of it. It's just a steep down rail, actually the rail in that pic does exist anymore haha. It's still gnar though

So update: I'm going to Rochester for sure. I'm hoping to get a new car because I finally had to throw in the towel on mine. If I do then I will probably get a pass to Afton. I could drive people up there on weekends/nights to ski if people wanted.

I would recommend getting an Epic Local Pass in that case then. Its only $150 extra and you can ski Summit and Eagle counties in Colorado and Heavenly, Flatstar, and Kirkwood in Tahoe when you're on winter and spring break. Breck and Key have sick parks. Kirkwood has pretty sick big mountain for a Vail resort.

Stoked that another skier is coming to the area. We'll have to session some city spots once the snow starts falling.

As far as passes go... you should check out Coffee Mill, too. The pass is cheap (I think I'm getting a pass there for weekends/nights and an Afton one for weekdays) & the terrain is doper than pretty much anything else in the area. Plus the drive is shorter.

The rails at the mill suck dick but I'm head park crew this year and I'm going to try to make some sick jumps. This is my first time ever doing park crew, let alone leading it, so it should be interesting
