Any trumpet players on NS?

I did in middle school. Hurt my pinky though.

the little hook or whatever stretched it I guess, so I only played for a year and a half. Twas fun though

I do. Not sure if I'm gonna take it past highschool seriously though. I want to play in college but I don't want to be a music major. That's what my current private teacher did. He was an engineering major but played on the side, but then he kept getting called for gigs, so he quit engineering and became a pro player.

Hell yeah, played for 7-8 years, make allstate every year, could possibly make a living off it when I'm older. And Flugey. Good way to make money off gigs, to buy ski stuff.

I actually got a full ride to University Wisconsin LaCrosse for Jazz music playing trumpet....turned it down and moved to Utah instead. I think I made the right choice. I haven't played in a few years but might start sitting in with my friends fusion band.

When you go to college, play trumpet in the marching band. Joining the drumline was one of the best decisions of my life. You instantly have 250 friends the day you audition, and the travel is great. This year I've been to Utah and Oregon, and we've had Colorado and Cal visit us. We're going to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio the day after Christmas, and then in the springtime I get to spend a week in Shanghai.

As far as music majors- There are 3/30 the drumline in music school, so being one is definitely not a requirement if you want to keep playing music at the college level.

I played in 6th grade and hated it, but im glad i did play because now i play guitar and it made the transfer to playing other instruments a lot easier

I'm bumping this thread because I also play trumpet, I have been playing for 8-9 or more, years now.

I'm in desperate need for some help though so rather than make a new thread, hopefully any of the guys in this thread see this and can give me some help.

I've been playing trumpet since 3rd grade and have never had any problems playing. I've had a private instructor since about 5th grade and have always played in my schools band. My private instructor told my band teacher awhile ago that I was the most natural trumpet player that he's ever taught. He said I always just had it, and it came easy for me. Back in middleschool we had the "districts" where you'd audition for a band for the best players in your district and so on. I always got in, and never practiced once for the thing. I've never auditioned in highschool though, for districts or all state. I don't know why, I just didn't want to.

Sorry I honestly don't mean to "claim" anything as none of that is really claim worthy to begin with. I just wanted to make it known that I'm not some beginner out there who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Anyways!

All this year playing I've been doing great until about a month and a half ago at a concert. I was playing through and then all of a sudden I couldn't play anything above a high A. So I moved my lips around a little to see if I could adjust a little bit and then couldn't even play anything out of the staff. By the end of the concert, and after me, messing up multiple times, my lips felt really over-used. I figured it was just nerves though and took 2 days off from playing.

I tried to play again a couple days later, and since then my tone quality has been horrible. My range has been awful. Also, my note beginnings and endings are soft and unclear when I need to tongue, and when I want to play softer my notes just fade into nothing. At first I thought it could be an air support issue, but I was pushing plenty of air through and still nothing.

I have no clue how to solve this, and I know the chance of anyone knowing is really slim especially on this site. I just wondered if anyone has had something like this happen to them that's why I ask.

I'm practicing here in my room and no matter how I change my embouchure, nothing feels right. I've also picked up my trumpet without even remembering that I've been having trouble playing lately. I'll start to play and it will be horrible, and I'll remember that I've been having a lot of trouble. I'm just thinking since I didn't even remember when I started to play, thatit can't be a mental thing where I'm over-thinking it or something.

Thanks for anyone that can help or has gone through something like this. +k to all.

it sounds like an issue with embouchure, but I'm not exactly an expert. I would say go to a private teacher (if you don't already have one) to work it out. I knew a guy a few years back who was insanely good but blew up his chops doing whisper tones, he got it back and plays much better now.

I play, and have been for around eight years. I started out classical and now play mostly jazz although I still am in an orchestra. I play a Bach strad, i don't know what year it is but the serial # is 435401.

Nice! I've been playing for 6, I play a vintage 1980 Strad model 37, serial number 177106. You can check your year on bachloyalist.com

I used play loads too, regional orchestra and wind band, plus jazz and a ska punk band. I have a Bach Strad too, but haven't touched it in years.

Wayne is the man. I was lucky enough to be in a masterclass given by him a couple years ago and it was amazing. His lead playing is insane.

Holy shit, being in a masterclass with him would be ridiculous! I know Tine had one the day after her concert, but I didn't go. I found out today that I will be out of town on the day of the Wayne concert, that kinda sucks.

Bump cause I just bought a trumpet. Played for years but quit to pursue my drumming more in HS and didn't own a trumpet, actually didn't even play percussion in HS just quit band in general.

When I learned I remember my music teacher taking players and ripping that hook off. Pretty boss. Def was nice playing without it. I'm thinking off doing the same with the one I just grabbed. Not the worlds most epic trumpet so I wouldn't give a fuck.

YOLO
