Any recommendations on where to hike around alta/snowbird?

Some buddies and I are heading out there this winter in early Jan. Was just wondering if anyone could point us in the right directions on some good shit to hike and ski. Nothing redic intense just fun, and good snow. Any help would be coo.

-drive to the last alta parking lot.

-facing into the canyon (more or less east), see the incline on the right (alta) and the left (not alta).

-look at the left option.

-hike.

really you can't go too wrong if you just keep your eyes peeled for possibilities. there are tons of good spots so you'll see something to go with. it kinda hard to describe but from that parking lot the area where the big gaps are can kinda be pointed out, just ask someone if you really want to find 'em.
 
if you want something within the resort, devils castle at alta and mt baldy at snowbird are epic on pow days
 
get a beacon, shovel, probe, and do some research.

start with grizzly gulch. park at the very end of the highest alta parking lot, and starting hiking up. its easy to follow the houses and cat track.

otherwise just go to Alta and ski castle and baldy. lift tickets are safer then avalanches.
 
Supreme and Wildcat Lift are the shit...Go to Westward Hoe on a pow day..it's off of wildcat, or go to Supreme Bowl off of supreme..then when it gets tracked out..go to rocky point which is past catherines area off supreme...basically you just hike out to cathrines and keep following the traverse till you reach the out of bounds sign..eagles nest and high rustler are the shit..they're off of colins lift off the high traverse...basically your best options is to find some guys who are good skiers and follow them! For Snowbird, basically anything off the tram is awesome..you'll see it when you get there..and seriously just follow people..do you know anyone here?
 
so do these areas allow hiking, or just not care, or are they on forest service land so its allowed that way? just curious, cuz in big sky youre not supposed to hike the mountain before it opens- they have signs posted everywhere and everything. just curious.
 
after they bomb and do avalanche control you can hike those areas at alta and the bird..it's the whole "enter through the gate" policy..Certain areas are always open, but sports like dvils castle, the shoulder, main chute, etc.. have avi work done and then you can ski them..everywhere out of bounds is free game..have fun and be carefull basically..
 
if your looking for a good place go to the 7 eleven on the corner to turn int little cottonwood canyon, i havent been in years but, ask the young guy in there abou chads and pyramid he can point you to how to get there pretty good. all of the area around chads is good and same with pyramid. if the snow is good stay in the area and hit castle or catherines go ouside the gate just a little and ski those open bowl kinda of deals or hit snobird. get to the tram early and get the first turn off the left side cant remeber what its called

Me and three of my friends are headin out of Madison, WI to Boulder, Co to pick up another dude and party in Denver for New Years. Then headin out from there the next day to alta/snowbird area. I forget where my buddy got the hotel but thats the plan at least.
 
skijunky first off he asked where to hike not where to ride the lift and be a lazy bastard to get there.

second there is no use in sharing your or anyones secret locations around this area. if you tell one person one person tells 3 people, three people tell 9 people, its like a crazy avalanche and the powder is only around these days for at most 5 runs. the speed at which the mountains here become tracked out is rediculous, no need to help the process.

thirdly the jibbers are already taking over this area at an alarming rate. i say park city has much better parks, terrain and hiking than anywhere in the cottonwoods, ever hike jupiter peak???? way more epic than anything else around. i dont get why they are coming over here.

and last to the people coming here just come take a look and hike to where you want to go. or follow a local if you can keep up on the side stepping and traverses.

first off baldy and castle are listed on the alta trail map, and DO require that you HIKE, yah its in-bounds but book packing up east baldy qaulifies for hiking in my book. so take it easy.

second everything is blown out, welcome to utah in 2007. who doesn't know about rocky point? shit got blown out like 3 years ago(mostly when collins talked about it in volume). there are plenty of cliffs and pow in the wasatch for everyone. besides I don't care who tells who, cuz I'm gonna wake up before all of you sorry bastards anyway, or someone else will, besides I'm lazy and I would rather show up and bomb out scooby then follow the guy who breaks the boot pack out. then follow him to wolvy, my legs love it.

third you think park city has the best hiking? I almost cried I laughed so hard. I think even my grandma who has never skied in her life could tell you that the terrain in LCC is much better then PC. does steeper and deeper mean anything to you?

but what do I know, maybe you like PC, fine with me, feel free to tell all your friends about park city and the epic hiking it has to offer.
