Any one else want to be a race car driver?

So lately I have been thinking how badly I would love to race car's and be a driver. Every time I drive my car I always find it to be so exhilarating. I went to a go karting place once where they have to fast kit carts and the guy working there said that he had never broken 25 seconds on this course and he had been working there for a while and I broke it my first lap. Is this just a childhood fantasy that everyone has or should I try and pursue this dream?

check your local car clubs and see if there is ever any autocross events or ice racing in winter. or mini stock, alot of tracks will have junior programs and club cars to practice in until you get your own. all relatively cheap ways to get into racing

lol, I wan to be like Ken block and drift the fuck out of corners and pick up all the ladies.
but actually I would but being a doctor or something would be more chills

save up for a real shit car, doesnt even have to be safety approved or street legal. if you want to, put some money into it to make it better, then sign up for a local rally or something. i know there are rallies a few times a year where i live, and ice racing and stuff so get into that if you really want to.

you can buy a decent race car for the price of a cheap street car, a decent spec miata will cost u 7 grand. if u wanna go the formula car route, a formula vee or something similar can be found for like 5 grand, both provide some of the best most competitive racing in the country, and will make you a much better driver than rally or autocross.

Yeah well I want to do rally more or less, but I have no idea where any rally tracks or anything are around here.

Make sure you get fans like this... he's dedicated.

you could be the next Dale Earnhardt or you could suck dick, you'll never know unless you get out and race. so stop asking NS and do something with your life. or you could always play soccer or something.

if ur from colo(judging by your name being breckshred) there are definitely lots of places to rally. i know colo has a rallycross series, and there is an awesome place called colorado offroad extreme, look up their website. they some kind of rally track with jumps and stuff. buy a RWD, not AWD or FWD, cheap tough, somewhat sporty car, and go beat the crap out of it there and in the colo rally cross. the RWD on dirt will teach you alot about car control. if you want to race cars as a hobby, do whatever you want, if you want to make a living out of it, and become the best driver you can, dont do rally. circuit racing will make you a much better driver/racer, take a racing school somewhere, talk to the people and instructors there, they can point you in the right direction. you either have to be very rich, or be good at getting sponsors to make it very far. but there are indy car/f1 drivers that have made it with very little to none of their own money.

What this guy said! I've been racing Formula Vee for two seasons now. I did a bunch of autocrosses and trackdays when I was back in school and then did an SCCA school to get my racing license. Go check out your local SCCA events and find someone to crew for. It will give you the feel of what its like to be at the track during the weekend and the amount of work that goes into it. Plus, you won't have to spend anything.

The other option is to find out if there is a local karting club and join them. I'm not talking the concession style karts where you pay twenty bucks and get 20 laps, but an actual race kart. Something like a 80cc-125cc clutch kart. You can get started in those for much cheaper than a full blown race car. A turnkey kart will range anywhere from 1k to 3k and entries few are much cheaper.

step 1. Join SCCA(Sports Car CLub of America)

step 2. Win a national championship

step 3. promote promote promote yourself as the next ayrton senna

step 4. profit?

seriously, its incredibly hard to get "into" professional racing, without either a. a shit ton of self-backed support(money, foo) or b. the gift of being extremely talented behind the wheel.

seriously, your best bet would be to join the SCCA and have fun learning how to race/drive your car. if you are serious, you can start to compete regionally/nationally and find sponsors/rides that way.

I race grassroots style, personally(with the SCCA) but build racecars/tech for professionals who race in the BMWCCA/PCA and World Challenge. It is very expensive/difficult to make it in professional racing.

go to driving schools/get as much seat time as possible and start in karts(shifter-karts, not 6hp rental karts) and you may have a shot.

good luck!
