Any Mountaineers in here, going to climb Mt. Washington

Any of you guys climbed Mt. Washington. I am trying to figure out how intense my gear needs to be esp. my boots. I am a life long skier first time mountaineer. I have enough ski clothing to equip an army. Will this keep me warm. Also are my standard snow boots with extra socks going to cut it or do I need an upgrade?

This may not be the best site to ask these things. TGR might have more mountaineers. More importantly though, if you need to ask than you might want to consult experts (guides and guide services, local people involved in the outdoors) and not us.

Guessing you being in NY you are talking about the Mount Washington in NH. The thing about Mount Washington is that the weather and conditions can change very rapidly up there. Some days you can hike it, and even ski with the same gear you use at the resort. Other days you'll want a good selection of technical clothing, and gear including ice axes, crampons, avy beacons and many other things. The weather can go from gorgeous to hell in the course of a couple hours.

The avy center site up there is a good start http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/ as well as timefortuckerman.com/.

You'll want to be confident in your choices, timing and ability or you can quickly get yourself in trouble.

Its a good hike though!

i've done it. i went up the side opposite tuckermans and it wasnt too hard. really fun though, but towards the top there are too many tourists

What date are you coming up? If you are coming in late april you'll be all set as long as you check the forecast, be intelligent, and check in with forest rangers station. While you are there you might as well ski tucks assuming thats what you are doing.

My friends just got me into climbing this year too. We usely go to the Gunks In NY cause it's only 20mins from my house, but that place is really cool climbing. I just put up a few pics on instagram. My user name is Alias_216... but I did the easy climbs 5.4 or something like that. The routes were 3pines n Andrews climb. But I know their always on the mountain project site, you'll prob get better info there. Good luck

Thanks guys for the comments guys, appreciate it. Looking forward to the first climb next Sunday, but as always safety first......

I hiked it in the spring a few years back. it's big. Got a little angry that there was a train and road to the top, thanks for telling me mom! lol, but it's a beautiful place no homo, really awesome hike, I would love to ski tucks, seems like a blast. Have fun dude and be safe! Don't forget to post pics in this thread after!

You should really get some crampons and an ice ax if you're going in the winter. Even if it's above freezing at the bottom the top will most likely be below freezing and boilerplate ice because it is always windy up there. You can rent them in North Conway at this place http://www.ime-usa.com/imcs/rental.html. Definitely check the avalanche website http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/. Make sure you bring some goggles too - it gets windy up there.

I've done it in all four seasons and winter is my favorite because no one else is up there. I recommend staying at a shelter at Hermit Lake. Having some walls around your tent helps make it a lot warmer!

Have a good hike!
