I'm just curious if anyone else on here has done summer sales or door to door? If so, was your experience good or bad.

for football freshman year i went door to door selling cards to support the team and then i kept all the money because i hate football people

I wasn't a sales man per say, but I did do some door to door work for one of the utility companies in Ontario.

I was essentially knocking on doors and giving a small speech and a bit of information on how to protect yourself against the guys trying to lock you into hot water tank scams and all that. Basically it was one of the larger companies using me to bully out the competition and try and look like they were helping the community.

I can say that it was the worst job I've ever had. The pay was pretty good, but the people you had to talk to sucked. They fucking hate you. You're interrupting their life and I couldn't help but feel bad about it.

If you're wondering why I did it, the job was put on by a marketing company that basically said they would hire me on as a coordinator if I was able to complete the job. I completed it, they didn't hire me. Real bummer.

But on a plus side, after walking 7 hours a day 5 days a week I was in the best shape I've been in in a long time.

Synopsis: You'll make some good money, but try and find a job where you aren't trying to manipulate people into wasting their money. It won't be a good feeling.

I did street level fundraising for NGOs, which included door to door - almost like sales, except you have to sell people on something that they don't even get to have or use .... Really hard - lots of rejection so I would advise really being into the thing you're selling. Eventually, I had to quit - it became increasingly difficult for me to convince people to spend their hard earned money on a bullshit product. But - if you're good at poker. Find a script that works for you, be a real person and good luck !

I sold door to door for Terminix this last summer and I'll try to give you a pretty good feel for how it was. The bottom line is that, no, I would not do it again. They will try to pitch you and say "you'll make X amount of money," but unless you are in the top 5% of the company, its not likely that you'll make copious amounts of money. I barely broke even over the summer. I was promised that I would get paid a lot at the end of the summer, and I recently talked with my boss and it turns out I'm getting a $700 check in a week or so. I was (not exaggerating) expecting about 7 or 8 thousand at the end of the summer. I wasnted to buy an FS700 at the end of the summer. I'll be fighting it, but thats how my situation stands right now.

The thing is you are working with a bunch of sharks - what they don't give to you, becomes their bonus and quite often folks get greedy. Also it really kinda sucks because you become an asshole too - you have to in order to survive.

Last thing is, the work hours sucked - I worked 75 hours + per week.

I'm glad I did it, just to say that I was perseverant enough to finish out the whole summer, but like I said I would probably never do it again or suggest anyone do it.

PS people are dipshits to you on the doors too

oh and pest control sales are probably easier than insurance sales, but dish sales (direcTV, Dish, etc.) I've heard aren't bad either

Inb4 that door to door job selling knives where the knife company tries to screw you or whatever. Oddly I've only ever read about this whole situation on NS.

I went door to door for green peace for two days. On the second day I ditched my partner and found a starbucks. I never went back, not even to get my paycheck. I received a "you have unclaimed funds" letter from the government two years later.
