well, here in PA archery is in and i was out for the night hunt today and put a shot on an 8 point at 16 yards. i never saw the arrow, but i know i didnt miss because i found some blood in the immediate area of the hit, but what troubled me was that there was no sign of the arrow (my last 3 deer in archery have been full pass throughs) and there was no blood beyond the immediate area of the hit, and it was only a splatter and a few drops. i looked for more blood for a good hour but didnt find any so i decided to resume in the morning so i wouldnt push the deer any farther with a continued search.

what should i do in the morning? i plan on taking an hour to look then if nothing shows up ill take my dog (labrador) out to track. (she's a damn good tracker).

does anybody have an experience with a deer not bleeding much after a hit? im not really sure what im asking ns for but theres got to be somebody?

You might be in for a lot of walking. And if you were unlucky enough to somehow miss a vital organ that deer could be alive for a long time. Hopefully your dog can help you out though.

i cant say i've ever had that happen, but make sure to mark all of the signs you find with pink ribbon or something

be ready for a lot of walking

I would check around to see if there are any deer trails in the area, as you know deer usually follow a trail through the woods. I don't know if your dog is going to be much help since there are a lot smells out there, unless she or he is trained. I would try to figure out a mile circle around the blood and check it out. Depend on where it was hit you may be in luck. You said you didn't see the arrow, I would search a little harder to see if it was a pass through. If not look at trees and what not around to see if the deer tried to rub the arrow out. I usually don't hunt bow, but some of my friends do. If you don't anything get back in the tree stand and hopefully you will see another. Good luck man and tell us what happens.

sounds like a wild hobby. i love eating game meat too...

I'm surprised there haven't been any animal rights hypocrites in hear complaining yet lol

same thing happened to my dad he had a non pass through and we went to get the deer an hour later and we spooked it so we just decided to find it in the morning and not push it anymore. We took out the dog and went back to were the shot was and let the dog smell the blood and we found it within 30mins.

where do you hunt at?

anyways, not getting a pass through is pretty uncommon. did you search around pretty good? if you are pulling anywhere from 50 lbs. and up you should pass through if you hit decently. (lungs, heart you know what i mean) my guess would be you hit it in the shoulder or some type of bone and it didn't pass through. chances are slim of finding it if that happened...

i hunt in sommerset most of the time (near bakersville) but yesterday i was hunting in unity township because the bucks are just so much bigger around the farms than the nut deer in sommerset. and i shoot grim reaper broad heads on carbons at 65 pounds. the more i think about it i must have hit either the shoulder blade or a rib dead on and might have broken the arrow. well im heading out now to look so ill get back with the results.

im just hoping that i either nailed the fucker and its all intenal bleeding or that by some strange act of god i just grazed it and it isnt hurt.

Chances are if you stuck it and it didnt pass through you probably hit a bone. But that broadhead is gonna tear the shit outa that deer if he keeps running, so you wont find any real immediate blood, plus that he wont go far. Did you have a good reading of where the deer ran off to?

you guys are never going to believe this shit!

i went out this morning and found huge splotches of blood about 40 yards past where i hit him and 10 feet past where i stopped looking last night. the blood trail was easy as shit to follow through the woods. it ran straight for a house about 400 yards away over the hill and through the woods and crashed in some old ladys yard. i found a big circle of hair and a gut pile and got super pissed that somebody would take the deer, so i talked to the lady who owned the house and she told me that she called her son to take the deer at 11Pm last night so i asked her for her sons number and called him. turns out he took the deer gutted it and hung it in their barn. he had his dad come over and get the deer down for me, i thanked them and then picked it up in my dads truck and drove it home.

the best part besides it being gutted was that it was a beast, 11 points (not 8 like i thought) and weighed about 180 dressed. ill get pics up later...

Well if you found blood that's enough reasonable evidence to go out in the morning to find it. Even if you didn't hit a vital organ the deer is going to bleed and it may be laying down underneath some cover right now. Track it and don't give up after an hour, mildly hurt deer can cover a lot of ground before it drops down so you may be in for one hell of a trek, the dog is a great idea also because it's fairly easy for you to lose a blood trail if the deer isn't bleeding a whole lot. Hopefully an the coyotes and wolves have left the deer alone...good luck~!

Nice find and nice buck, 180 dressed is pretty fuckin big.

Only thing I can criticize is you should have waited it out last night so you could have the glory of finding your own buck. On the other hand you did get it gutted out for ya so that is kinda cool.

Well done. I gotta start bowhunting. We hunt with rifles up in bradford county.

If you ever come over to the pocohoes to ski hit me up with a PM.

haha, thanks, and ill hit you up with a pm if im around

the only reason i didnt look any harder last night is because i wasnt sure how well i hit the deer (turned out to be that i broke one rib, hit the lungs, and buried into a rib on the other side breaking the arrow) and didnt want to push the deer any farther than neccessary

thanks and +++karma to all

aaaa that's what i get for not reading till the end of the thread, good job finding it, I would avoid leaving it so late to go find it again, a flashlight is your friend if it gets dark. next time you may lose it to another hunter or a pack of wolves.

my boss had the same thing happen to him a couple weeks ago. he ended up walin about 100 extra yards to find the deer. he said it was really wierd cuz of know blood but he said he hit it in the back of the leg and it must have clogged an artery or somethin. sooo... u might find ur deer....

its awesome that they were so good about letting you have your deer back. they could have been huge dicks about it. nice trophy, going to mount it?

and to the guy above me, hunters like this are the kind you want out in the woods. you could tell by his post that he has respect for the deer, in that he was hopeful he either dropped it or that it was only a glancing scratch, meaning the deer wouldnt suffer.

he also didnt give up and just take another, he put the time into finding out what happened with the one he shot at first.

im not berating you, your opinion on hunting is yours to form

its more like i am praising the thread creator for not being a d-bag hunter and treating it like a video game, hitting the "reset button"

Nice work man! I always leave it if I don't find a ton of blood right away on evening hunts. You made the right move, it just sucks that it crashed in somebody's yard.... but at least you got it back. My buddy shot a 200 class 17 point bruiser buck and tracked it for 2 days... finally found the farm yard it died in and the landowner refused to give it to him. He was eventually able to buy it...

hell yes. hunters with the exception of the rich safari in africa type dont just kill animals without a reason. i hunt deer not only for the enjoyment but for the lean tasty meat as well.

im just pumped and im getting it mounted for sure!

Too bad its so expensive to get stuff taxidermied, I went duck hunting in Canada last weekend and to get a duck taxodermied was soooo expensive.

its not too bad but deff worth it,

how much was a duck, because it was 300 for the buck that i had shoulder mounted a few years back

nice work

They let you hunt at night in pennsylvania?

I live in Alberta and we're not allowed to hunt past 30 minutes after sunset.

300 is pretty cheap. I had to pay 700 for a shoulder mount. It was for a sheep though.

Great buck there man.

It's so dirt cheap to stuff because PA is the biggest hunting state in all of the US. go ahead look it up.

We also have more cc handgun permits than any other state.

I gotta learn to butcher one of these years so I don't have to pay for that in order to get meat.

And to the dude who says that is depressing.....Shame on you buddy. Here is a man who enjoys lean game meat. Puts in effort to go out in a legal fashion and work to earn himself the right to take a fine animal from the forest. Here he is successful with his prize and food for the winter, and all you can say is.........Oh poor dead animal that is so depressing.

What's depressing is overpopulation and seeing these things waste away dead on the road, or asshole hunters who poach or leave em to die if they are hard to find.

Thread poster good job on your successful hunt.

I'm sure he is. I wouldn't worry too much about it being wrong. A deer that size can fill a freezer and feed a family for a very long time, almost for free. Plus you would be hard pressed to find meat as good anywhere else.

good venison recepie, if anyone is interested

take a steak that is an inch or two thick, cut it into smaller pieces (shishkabob size) marinate it in some soy sauce (or teriaki sauce) and spices for a while, then wrap a piece of good bacon around the venison and grill until cooked to your liking.

delicious

oh man i know! venison+bacon=heaven

i do the same thing but use the backstraps and just cut fillets about an inch thick, pepper them, wrap em up with the bacon and cook to med-rare.

sooooo good!

im so jealous. sick buck.
ill have to show this to my roomate. he's got his bow up at college haha and has been wanting to go hunting for quite some time

when i was a broke ass college kid, a friend gave me a bunch of venison steaks, chops, the whole nine yards. i ate like a woodland king all winter long, it was the shit.
