some, maybe. There's a lot of good, laid back cops out there, though. You just don't hear about them. It's bad that a lot of people think most or all cops are like this. Police officers are supposed to make people feel safe, yet everyone fears cops even if they aren't doing anything wrong. It's pretty sad.

At least the cop admitted to being wrong too. That could have ended much worse for the driver.

yet they represent the entire police force, and it just seems to keep occurring. Never trust the police, be sure to hold them accountable. A "good" cop is what we should expect, nothing less.

The problem with the police is they consist almost entirely of people with middling intelligence. These are the people who spent they're high schools years shooting spit balls in the back of class while barely scraping out a B in Algebra. It's a recipe for disaster to put the greatest power in the hands of some of the least extraordinary people.

I would like to see the police hiring system require a rigorous psychological evaluation. Candidates who are found to be vengeful or easily-angered should not be given job offers. This would hopefully reduce situations like this where cops use their power to harass citizens just because the citizen did something they didn't like.
 
the issue here is, the cop isn't even a bad one. he pulled the trucker over because he was getting honked at for no apparent reason, he admitted he was going over 70 mph, which is the highway speed limit. My guess is if the trucker was going 65 and the cop was going 75 it could show the cop was going faster than the trucker with a 10 mph difference but the cop was only going 5 over. No one pulls people over for going 5 over the speed limit, and studies show that police are human beings too. As for the cell phone, thats kind of an issue considering that Illinois just got a law at the beginning of the year saying that you cannot be holding any type of PDA cellular device or what not. That is pretty inexcusable considering distracted driving is a leading cause of car accidents in the US...

Sparknotes: The trucker was going 5 under and cop was going 5 over. Police are humans. Cellphone use is inexcusable. Trucker was kind of a dick but had a decent point. Cop was reasonably nice throughout the entire ordeal so im not seeing why police are so bad.

decent because of the outcome of the video. the fact that the way he enforced the law changed, once he was told that he was being recorded is something to consider.

The cop straight up changed the way he enforced the law after he found out about being recorded. Does this at least not wake you sheep the fuck up?

Not sure if it's the case down in the states (I assume it is though), but most places in Canada first responders (police, ambulance, fire, etc) are exempt from distracted driving laws (ie - using cell phone, computers, handheld devices, etc). Of course there are probably policies around appropriate use, but I wouldn't say that's the that's the place of random trucker to decide or act upon.

In Illinois (where this took place), police officers are exempt from the law prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving...as are emergency first responders.

So the cop wasn't doing anything that he would get in trouble for. He could have been a douche and still written the ticket...probably could have found something else on that truck to violate the guy for....license plate light out, etc., but was a pretty nice guy about it all.

Actually the cop admitted using his cell phone was wrong. He was probably using it for personal use. He knew he was caught and if he went to court they would've pulled up the phone records. Bravo to the trucker for calling him out.

Guarantee the trucker would've taken his "unlawful use of horn" ticket to court because of his video, and his own personal dashcam. The cop that issued the ticket would appear as well. And yes, the cop did do multiple things wrong but I shouldn't have to explain that to you.

He didn't give the trucker a ticket so no one is bringing anyone to court.

He probably shouldn't have been on the phone, but he wasn't breaking any laws. He was probably speeding, but who doesn't speed? From the sounds of it, he wasn't driving erratically or dangerously. Just fast, but we have no way of knowing how fast.

I agree the trucker probably shouldn't have been pulled over in the first place. The cop should have ignored him and kept going on his way.

Instead of being a dick, he was pretty decent.
 
I hate to be a "fuck the police" kind of guy. but lately I have had too many bad experiences with law enforcement to think otherwise. As a young adult (21) I do not feel that the police in my area keep me protected, in fact its the exact opposite. They are out to get me and others my age, who they profile time and time again.
 
double post, fuck it.

The most recent bad experience happened 2 weeks ago, I was the passenger in NS member Granite_State's car. We were followed through town by an officer so we decided to stop and get gas on the other side of town. The officer pulled over ahead and waited for us to fill up. Then were followed again before being stopped for having one of those tree air fresheners hanging from our rear view mirror. apparently this air freshener was "obstructing" our windshield. The officer then claimed we smelled of alcohol and questioned if we had drugs in the car (we had one beer each at dinner an hour prior..). The driver submitted to a breathalyzer, which even after passing the officer continued to harass us. In the end we left the scene with almost $500 in bullshit obstruction tickets.

So the answer is no; after being stalked, harassed, and ticketed for air fresheners, I dont trust the police.

Sounds like you're just making excuses for the cop. I by no means hate the police, I simply don't trust them. Cops need to be held accountable, they are NOT above the law. And being on the phone while driving is illegal in some states fyi
