Last night I watched a detabe on ''Counterspin'' on CBC newsnet. Good stuff. The one thing that I toke away from that is probably the views of a 'representive of the Iraqi people' (I forget exectly who he was, but that's close enough). He was saying that the Iragi people want the war, and welcome the American attack. Their reason for this is their desire to get rid of Hussein (sp?). They have been trying to overthrow him for the last twenty years and over two million people have been killed have been killed by 'Hussein' in order to keep this rise down. It would appear that the Iraqi people want Hussein down, just so they can form a new goverment. But, I think that there are two problems which would arrise if the yanks get rid of the current Hussein:
1) A new dictator would arise, crushing the Iraqi people's dreams of a responsible democracy. Call me racist if you will, but I believe that its due to the nature of Islamic people. From what little I know of Islam, I understand it to a way of life based on one thing; surrender. It is my understanding that are devout Islamics are so because they surrender themselve to Allah and the belief that in the voice of the prophet Mohammed of the his words. While this is fundamental for spiritual truthness, as said by all religion I know of, and serves everyone, including the Iraqi people well, it could be very detremental in establishing the type of goverment that they crave. So, in conclusion, it would appear that more than Hussein's removal is neccisary to establish a responsible democracy in Iraq. Education of the people, and hence the revolutionaries is needed.
2) It is much more likely that the US will simply install a temporary un-democratic (I daren't say dictorship) as a means to stablize the country after the tempest that arises with any invading force. Unfortunitly (sp?) for the Iraqi people, this replacement is not done for them, but rather as part of the US's invasion plan (as is rational for any invading force to do). Another bad omen for the Iraqi people is American's history of action in invading countries; the history of the goverments and leaders they've installed. While, once again, my knowledge on this is minimal, it is my understand that most of these goverments have been installed with primarily American interests in mind, that is to say that have negleted the needs and desires of the people they govern. Because they are installed by a foriegn super power, and not the people whom they will ultimatly govern, they are unresponsible and undemocratic; the opposite of the American ideal.
Thanks for reading so, I'm losing it, so I gotsa go now.
Another thing for all the haters: If I sound snoby, or over-intellectual-just-for-the-sake-of-looking-smart, I don't mean to; das jest how I's be talkin when I's be thinkin bout shit like dis. Foo. Peace.
And one more thing. I am nether pro-war, nor anti-war, but I do now believe that American invasion is in the better interests of the Iraqi people.
