well today was my schools club trip which means i just ski groomers with my friends from school which is cool cuz i need an easier day every now and then. well going up the lift we were having a chair to chair snowball fight during which i drop my pole. so i have to get it on the way down. i ski under the chair and get it. then cut back into the runs just in time to get blindsided by some 200+ lbs ski patroller flying over a roller. we both go rolling i think i did about 5 somersaults over about 30 feet estimating by where my skis came off. some other ski patroller who comes down right behind us is like holy shit r u ok? and i got the wind knocked out of me pretty hard so i could respond right away. but then i get up and start collecting my things and they briefly check for injuries. they were cool about it, the guy admitted it was his fault being the uphill skier and all. so now i just have a bad headache (concussion?) thank god i was wearing my helmet

word.

you just wish you could carry a vid of that happening around with you as like a get out of jail free card next time you bomb switch through a ski school class.

Wow... I once saw a ski patroller mess up on a mogul and then yard sale into this orange fencing blocking the terrian park off from the run he was on.

yeah i wish i had a vid just b/c the patroller coming up behind said it was pretty epic. btw how do u know if u have a concussion?

did you black out at out during the crash? do you have a weird persistent headache? then you should go and see a doctor.

yea i was in the park 2 weeks ago and this ski patroller decided he wanted to try a box( mind you this is a private ski place with really rick people and park was basically empty) and he starts off all right but then completely slips out and rolls out into the landing...he was alright though, funny that it happened though

That's a pretty sick ski patroller that airs off rollers hahaha, and he didn't get mad at you either. I think this is the only ski patroller post in which the patroller is a decent skier.

dude, my rents are on the patrol, and from what i've seen, there are soooo many patrollers that suck at skiing. a couple weeks ago i got up early in the morning to go throw some avy bombs with the patrollers, because it had snowed a ton and i wanted to get a few first tracks before the hill opened. These two patroller guys tagged along to learn the routes and stuff (they've been on the patrol for 5+ years, though..), and they'd both been skiing for 30+ years, or so they said. Neither of them could ski pow worth crap. as in, our group had to wait every couple hundred feet because they were falling down so much. keep in mind this was in the PNW, where we get a lot of different kinds of pow, and where there's a storm every few weeks or so, so there's not really an excuse to "not be able to practice" skiing pow. there's a lot of sucky patrollers, as far as skiing ability goes. I usually find it quite humorous..

yes it was. and yeah ive got a headache, no spots in my vision, pupils dont seem dilated but i do think i black out for at least a second or 2 b/c i cant remember the actual impact. i just remeber seeing him at the last second and being all oh shit and trying to avoid him then next thing i remember is rolling head over heels. the whole thing is kinda blurry

yeah, its never a bad idea to see a doctor. sounds like you have a concussion! get it checked out dude, another small head bash could result in a very bad head injury

but just cause i have headache doesnt mean i havea concussion right? like if u bump ur head something you may get a headache but its nothing serious??

oh and my friend told me that if u go to sleep after getting a concussion then u could go into a coma. thats false right?

no, it can happen. sometimes, right after you're hit (you have to hit your dome pretty hard..) you can fall asleep and go into a coma. this is immediately after you hit your head though... if you stay awake for a couple hours, you're usually fine.

ok then i can go to bed and not have to worry. im just gonna see how i feel in the morning if my head hurts still ill see a doctor. i think its prolly just a headache. i mean my head didnt even start hurting till about 30 minutes after the collision. could even be completely unrelated

yea man, i've had a couple concussions similar to what you've described, and you continue to feel pretty shitty for the rest of the day, but in the morning things are usually better. If it's still bad pain in the morning though, you should go get it checked out, like you said.

at my home mountain the patrollers fall off getting on the chairlift and shit. and they all ski like noobs and cut u off when ur about to hit the rail

UPDATE: i saw the same patroller in the lodge the other night and it turns out in that crash he tore his mcl. i dont know how it happened that I (145lbs) was uninjured and this 230lb dude was, and even though im glad it wasnt me that got hurt i feel bad about. i know being injured sucks ass

I got a concussion a few weeks ago. I was unconscious for a little bit. then when i came to i couldnt remember my name or day of the week. scary shit. looking back on it now, the first thing i remember is asking people what happened after i had apparently skied down myself from the crash site (which i dont remember). my friends who were watching had to tell me everything that happened. Afterwards i was fine tho, just a couple headaches.

he has more weight coming down than you, at least that would be my guess as to why he tore his mcl, more pressure means greater risk of hurting something bad

mass really has very little to do with the ski patrolller getting injured in this situation. Tearing an mcl or acl is all a matter of how the knee twists and bends, it's easier for someone heavier to tear something just because of the added momentum when you're both going at a similar velocity, so mcl and acl tears are all really just luck of the draw.
