Another Avalanche...

Yeah it was big. Up at Middle Basin in beehive, ripped to the rocks. Made for a pretty shitty day. I would also like to say SCREW the search and rescue for taking 4 hours to get there, when we were 30 minutes up the trail, we sat there for that long and it was like 5 below zero. This is the second time they have pretty much fucked me in a bad situation, Then the news paper said they brought ina chopper crew which is bulllshit as well. They brought up 2 sleds that got there the same time as the hikers did. Weak. RIP Tyler

The snowpack's really variable around that area right now, so it's going to be hard to gauge what will slide and what won't. Given the situation, I can honestly say that this one probably would've caught me too. It sounds like they definitely knew what they were doing, but were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

RIP

It all seemed perty sketch. We didn't even hit any slopes. Ro said that that whole flat basin part wumped so he just went home, instead of trying to go any higher.

Last time I was up Hyalite we were getting some collapsing higher up--probably close to the elevation of Beehive. It wasn't anything huge, but when you know it's a layer 3' down that's doing it it's kind of unnerving. The big thing I don't like about Beehive is how wind-affected it is, it's almost impossible to get a really good idea of what the snow's like unless there hasn't been wind for a while (which doesn't happen very often). This kind of snowpack makes me feel better about not being able to ski for another month.

there was a little blurb about this in todays USA Today. shitty deal , real shitty. the report on the gallatin avalanche site said it occured on the ridge separating beehive from middle basin. i assume middle is the small basin between beehive and bear basins?

holy cow, that looks like a huge avalanche. Thats too bad to hear, unfortunately these types of things happen alot, especially with all of this snow we have been getting.

That is so gnar. The slide path goes right through those trees, ugh.

That crown also propagated quite a ways over. Scary, scary shit.

Be careful my fellow Montanans, obviously we are having a tough couple weeks. 2 avi deaths and now Billy Poole!!
