Ankle Problems Need Help ASAP

yo so a couple months ago I started having really bad ankle pain caused by my heel lifting out of my fulltilts, it was my bad for getting a size to large. The ankle swells up really bad, and since its the end of the season i havent rested it at all, and ski on it every weekend. Im not worried about any serious problems because there is no pain walking, or doing anything really unless i have the boot on. What happens is when i put the ski boot on, it pushes down on the swelling and all the fucked parts of my ankle and then it swells a lot more. So its gotten progressively worse the last few weeks since i refuse to not ski. The thing is, I got one weekend left at my home mtn, and im driving up to loon next week where i wanna throw down, but now i can barely stay out for more than like 5 runs before needing to take my boot off. I need this thing to get better asap. Any ideas? I ice everyday and am contemplating trying to get a doctor to drain it but i honestly have no clue.

Anti inflammatorys, there certain foods that help with that also, ice ice ice, cold baths work wonders on my knee would prolly help your ankle. I think you should really see a doctor tho that swelling isn’t good something is probably broken or fractured

goddamnit

Idk bro I'm sort of in the same boat, but mine sounds way less fucked. If the skiing is really worth it to you like it is to me, I'd just try to change your style around a bit to accomodate the pain, unbuckle your boots every chairlift ride, be okay with taking breaks -theyre better than taking the whole weekend off- and take antiinflammatories. Its already fucked, you probably cant make it much worse. This is not official medical advice, only send advice

I used to get swelling in my ankle from boots that were too big, which I solved by going to a boot fitter and throwing down $$. In the meantime tho my move was a bunch of Advil, elevate, and stick foot in a container filled with ice water immediately after skiing and then again before bed.

Alcohol/liquor has been used as a pain reliver since the dawn of time. Trick is too maintain a buzz for the sendiness/pain relief and not lose motor function.

I used to have the same problem and it got so bad I had to drag myself across the house to go to the bathroom cause both ankles were fucked.

Stop skiing with those boots first off. You are going to have to take time off the feet. Ice is ok, but I dont recommend it because swollen ligaments can tears is its too cold. Anti-inflammatories, Ibuprophan and rest are the cure. I do recommend getting crutches and still move around when your body lets you. Cardio activities and good food can accelerate the healing by a week or 2.

rest up well op

You should have been riding with your boots tighter all season. Now you're just fucked until you can stop skiing and let it heal

i fell for the "buy full tilts" meme like a dumbass instead of going to an actual bootfitter and getting boots that actually fit my foot

damn dude that's a wildly unexpected turn of events

have you considered a career in pharmacy

I prefer big pharma I get to screw over the common people and make tons of money on it. Plus hearing about all the lives I’d ruin would be amazing ?

My lame advice: switch over to mountain biking, skateboarding, snowboarding, or whatever else for a while, rest, do rehab strengthening and mobility exercises. It doesn't make you any less of a skier to take a bit of time off to recover. Imo.

Try heel Risers. Try foam adhesive j bars or c pads around the ankles. There’s only so much you can do with big boots

I second this. I’ve always used butterfly wraps to hold my heels down.

I had a similar issue, but it didn't get that out of hand. First of all your boot liners are packed out and you need new liners or boots at least that's what the guy at the ski shop told me. I bought new boots on the spot, because I had my full tilts for ~3 years at that point.

As for the ankle issues, I have done about ~1 & 1/2 years of physical therapy for ankle from tennis and skiing. If you can bear the pain you need to fill a bucket of ice and let your ankle be submerged for ~20 minutes. (No breaks you should be literally unable to feel your foot almost). Most of the PT exercises felt useless except simple stretching the ankle. The ultrasound massage was the most effective. The pain and swelling went significantly down when I learned to "walk more with my calves and less with my ankle." I know it sounds stupid but you have to focus on using your calve to do most of the work when you walk now.

Oh Yea KT tape everyday as someone said before. Obviously minimal tape when you ski. But you need to do some research as to how exactly your ankle needs to be taped. Try out a few methods. What works for other people will not work perfectly for you here.
