Ankle injury

Sup NS, I broke my ankle on my 18th birthday during the summer and I had a surgery requiring 5 screws and a metal plate. I was wondering if it could affect my ski season. Should I remove the screws and the plate after my convalescence or will it keep it stronger? Could I feel pain in my ski boot? I remove my plaster in 2 weeks from now. Thanks alot NS, I know that I have lot of questions, I am not fully informed in this area.

it may hurt with a tight boot, my dad switched because of the same injury from skiing to snowboarding. if i were you i'd find some nice liners and not buckle the boot as tight

I broke both my ankles at the same time (AKA Tanner) 2 plates and 18 total screws. Once I found and fitted the right pair of boots I felt fine. I have 130 flex boots and I really enjoy the stiffness and support. I am more comfortable skiing than running. Yes there is pain if we charge open to close for two or three days straight, but its worth it. However once the ski boots come off on any day they are not going back on that day. Its been 10 years and I still have the plates and screws in. I tried reaching out to Tanner once because I wanted to know if he still has all his plates and screws in but I never heard back.

Biggest advise I can give you is take your time coming back, PT is super boring and expensive, but you got to do it.

If you have any super specific questions fell free to DM me. Good luck with the recovery.

I broke my ankle a few year back and didnt really take care of it (waited a month to go to the doctor and then only went to one visit to get x rays). Once it healed I had a hard time skiing for a little while. I did no physical therapy or anything so I think it stemmed from loss of range of motion. Once you are in your boot you are basically wearing a cast on your ankel so there is not much to worry about.

this is some good advice, take it somewhat seriously and heal up/rehab it properly. bum ankles are just a nuisance to deal with and having to end your days early because it hurts to make a simple turn isn't fun.

I wish I could go back and recover properly with physical therapy. It took a year to be able to jump and drop cliffs and I still had to be careful because my ankle couldn't take the impact. I was so fucking broke that going to the doctor and spending $700 on x rays just wasn't a possibility.

thanks alot guys for the posts! I will try to do some rehab for sure! I think that 4 months before the ski season is enough to make it stronger

Personally, if you have the option to have all the metal removed, I would do that for health reasons. That's just me. Also, do you have weak bones or something, maybe you shouldn't be skiing in case you break something else?? Again, that's just me..

Breaking your ankle isn't easy to do. But I will say I broke my fibula in 7th grade before a comp. The dr didn't cast it that night so I could go to a dr back home. He gave me a metal brace and told my dad that a ski boot is basically a cast and if I could put my foot in it the next day I could ski.

I did cry getting my foot in my boot, it took an hour, and I wasn't able to put any pressure on that ski and compete, but I basically skied on 1 foot the whole time. Now it's fine and I've never felt pain from it after awhile.

Do you have custom footbeds in your boots?

If not it might be a good idea to get some made, footbeds will secure your foot in the boot helping eliminate extra unnecessary movement and provide extra support which could make a difference. If you do feel pain and you think it's caused by the boot go see a bootfitter, there is all sorts of extra padding you can add to the liner and things you could do to help alleviate some pressure on the ankle.

nothing to add other than do not fucking try to ski 8 weeks after it broke. That was the worst decision of my life. My ankle is fine now though

Hit the physical therapy HARD. I spiral fractured my ankle two seasons ago, and gunned it with the rehab and was back to rails and medium jumps without much pain in 16 weeks. I found that the tighter I kept my boots, the more it immobilized the ankle, and the better it felt.

I was a gigantic idiot about mine. I only had a super bad high ankle sprain + minor ligament damage and skied no less than about 2 weeks after it. Basically living with constant soreness/pain all the time now, but my boot actually feels not that bad. Definitely have been moments where the whole mental side of "am i going to fuck this up again?" kept me from going all out for sure

It will depend on how the screws are placed in your ankle. One of my friends broke his fibula and had it screwed/plated and you could actually feel the ends of the screws down the outside of his ankle. It gave him hell skiing, by the end of the day he had obvious red spots over each of the screws. He recently had the screws taken out and reckons it's 1000 times better.

If you can't have the hardware removed (there is an associated recovery from that, too) then you may have to look at adjustments to your boot fit specifically in the affected areas.

This is all assuming that you recover proper ankle functionality...

So just broke mine the other day had to only get 2 screws. Broke my medial malleolus I think it's called. Wanting to know how long after the six weeks in a cast before you can ski. Trying to at least get a few weeks at the end of the season so I atleast get more than one day riding

hey guys! I removed my plaster today! My ankle is pretty rusty, I can barely walk. I started rehab by my own with youtube videos and I will be with a physiotherapist in 1 week. I will keep you posted, thanks for your help!

Wow this is so shitty... Commented "Tanner hall" and broke my ankle a week after... Karma is a bitch. I think I had the same surgery OP, but 5 screws, a pin and plate. I'm in a boot now and stretching it as much as I can by myself. Hopefully it won't affect the season to much.
