yo yo breadcrumbs,

i was trampin the other day, and landed wrong (off the tramp) and i chipped my ankle, and messed with some tendons in my achillies, the chip is fine, i feel no pain, so the doc doesnt care about it...... im just wondering who has had major sprains, and if it affects your skiing because a ski boot is basically like a cast so you cant fuck with your ankles that bad in a ski boot..... just give me some stories, what i can excepect etc.

its been exactly one week since i did it and about 15% of my foot and leg is purple, and the swelling is almost gone

i had a major sprain on my 18th birthday, it was in gym class and we were playing some bball, anyways i jumped up for a rebound and landed on someones foot and rolled my ankle horribly, i hopped to the bench and sat down and the fucken bell rang, 10 seconds before the class was done i fucked my ankle, and the hospital didnt even give me crutches cuz they said im old enough to know my limits, and my ankle still hurts every now and then

i can't stand everyone who keeps sayin a boot is like a cast...if your ankle is fucked than the impact of skiing still kills, and if its swollen have fun tryin to get your foot into your boot. seriously elevate it and ice it 15 on 20 off as much as possible and just basically stay off it as much as possible and you should be able to ride like 3-4 weeks later, otherwise your just gonna make it worse and have a shitty season

Yeah, I sprained my ankle on a tramp on thanksgiving. It's almost better now, I can get into my boot and walk around fine, just not jumping yet. I think I'll try skiing in a week or so, once finals are over.

vv1zard, thats cool dude, i messed with it last wednesday, and i still ice it daily, elevate it whenever possible, wear a tensor 24/7 and i exercise my ankle a few times a day for mobility and such. im staying off it as much as possible.... the first tour is jan 23/25.... think i'll have a problem?

just take care of it, like it sounds like you are doing. Sprains will heal up (enough to get back on snow) in a week to two. It most likely won't be fully healed until like 4, but just be smart, don't try to jam your foot in your boot before its ready. There is nothing worse than re-injuring an old injury (especially when it hadn't fully healed).

i chronically sprain ankles. I'm lucky if I go 6mos. without rolling it. I've skied with real bad sprains, just ice it so it fits in your boot and clamp down, it'll hurt like a mofo and dont go crazy, but you can ski. the hardest thing is getting OUT of the boot. pain is weakness leaving the body.

im just gonna sling crystal meth so i dont have to get a real job and can afford to ski, with the way my senior year is goin though thats probably one of my few options

I'm the same as 221 with ankles. First day I got up to Camp Of champs two years ago I had a really bad sprain, tore about all my ligiments in my ankle. Ever since then it just hasn't been the same. I've lost alot of confidence on it. Just when I think it gets better I step on it wrong and re-tear everything.

And as for the boot acting like a cast and bracing it - yes it does. I guess it really depends on where you've injured it. If it's on an area that recieves alot of stress just by standing on it then yeah it's still going to hurt.

It hasn't been a real big problem with me while skiing, because the sides of my ankle are the weakest and my biggest problem is rolling my ankle over. it can't do that in a boot.

If you screw up your ankle bad, then take it seriously. Be good to it, and physical therapy is a plus.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

the boot does act like a cast somewhat. but your ankle will still be able to twist... my ankle's been really bad lately, I hopped down a small flight of stairs on the weekend and just the impact caused so much pain. I think I should see a doctor about it.

manus, you say one wont be ready until like 4.

does that mean in 4 months? 4 weeks?

i know your not a doctor or anything, i just like getting a ballpark estimate of how bad people think my injury is compared to theres as well..... keep em comin guys this is sick

sorry, meant to say 4 weeks.

Just remember though, the idea of ice is to reduce swelling and take away some pain.

The purpose of Heat is to draw blood to the affected area, which can cause a little discomfort, create some swelling, but it promotes healing.

Basically, best bet is typically ice it the first couple days, and then use heat packs for a few days (keeping it elevated as much as possible).

I sprained my ankle about 2 months ago and it still hurts especially when it's cold. Ski boots do act like casts but the hard part is getting your ankle in and out of the boot. Plus your ankle still moves. right now i'm just trying to get my flexibility back

I tore some ligements in my ankle three weeks ago and i have just started going skiing again. I can carve and monkey around a little but thats all. No jumping or jibbing at all. But most places dont have much open in the parks so i dont mind so much.

having strong calf muscles can lead to chronic weak ankles.

i bet he stopped caring by now:

however, um.

yeah, my ankles were sprained real bad, and in the ski boot, it DOES hurt quite a bit.

i did it a few times this summer (sprained) and it really hurt to go water ramping. the jump itself wasn't bad, but the hiking and shyt is.

however, i just let it heal, and i was fine in a few weeks. however, i guess we'll see what happens when i start riding this winter. (saturdya? ohiocan suck my asshole)

i wont drop out of high school for skiing, mom

whats up all, just a little re-cap

im walking with no tensor and no limp. feelin really good, still icing, and elevating though.

i was just wondering if anyone has ever hurt there ankles actually skiing. Is there anything I should stay away from once im 100% to make sure i dont re-injure myself.

thanks for the feedback

Yes, I've hurt my ankle numerous times while skiing. A full out, serious, level 3 sprain does not take 4 weeks to heal. Think along the lines of 2 months, minimum, up to 4-6, to properly heal everything that you've managed to fuck up. Serious sprains are nothing to joke about, you're damaging some hard to heal ligaments and tendons.

That being said, this theory of having your boot act as a 'cast' is only about 50% correct. Do them up as tight as you can without completely cutting off circulation, in a stiff boot, and you'll be better off. A soft soft boot like a 1080(not pro) or a rossi soft won't work as well. And since you do need to flex your ankles to ski properly, you can start to imagine the pain...

After doing my ankle in and rehabbing it for a month, I quickly found out that lots of soft snow(15+cm), jumping, and really tech, sketchy skiing was too much to handle. High speeds were fine, but carving a decent turn was a bitch. Groomed terrain helped a lot. Rails were still ok, oddly enough. Basically, if it was fun before you fucked your ankle, it's gonna suck for a long time before you can do it well again, and your ankle will probably hate you.

Keep up with the rehab, and if one there's one thing to look forward to, it's this: your ankle, despite all I've said, will feel better after skiing than before. It will like the exercise, provided you don't try to go hardcore on it right away and blow it apart again.

yeah i screwed up my ankle skiing last weekend, i posted it in a cult but here it is:

so on saturday i sprained my ankle really bad. skis got all crossed up while spinnin in a rut (thats the best explanation i have). out for a couple o weeks. tweaked my knee in the process. felt something pop, and later i felt a knot on the side of my knee. i was trying to put a little weight on it after a while and one step i felt somethin slip in my knee. it felt like it does when you hit your funny bone. well anyway, i could all of a sudden walk better, and the knot was gone. just a little story, figured i would share.

the only way i figure it could happen is if my two lower leg bones pulled up and away slightly from my foot which is locked in my boot. it is still so swollen, but i can walk on it. no lateral movement yet though.

I sprained mine last winter, and it was still messed up until late this summer. It was sprained somewhere on Blackcomb, BAD backcountry booter&landing. Choppy, super hard snow+backwards twisting fall=I'm just lucky it wasn't my ACL. You know what hurt more? The ski out to the gondola. 2 months of physio 3X a week, rehab excercises for 2 months after that(and some minor skiing) and then some more rehab and some running(bad idea), plus 2-3 months of sitting at a desk answering phones all day and now it's about 85% good again.

holy shit dude. how did you keep your mental state up? that must have been the hardest thing seeing the snow falling and not being able to ride.

Drink. Lots. Physio is good if you go hard at it.
