Andy Mahre & Pep X-games footy

While they're at it, they should dig up footage of Winter X one and JF Cusson's unnatural switch 7. That was huge. It would give ESPN more cred if people could see how the X games have progressed, but maybe they don't care.

No, seriously guys, this is what happened.

I only wish I could bump your Karma to 10,000. What an awesome find. Imagine you are sitting on your couch and you have never seen anyone ever go off a jump switch and then you see this:

This was mind blowing.

Haha thanks. Someone made a thread about it a long time ago and I downloaded the video, so it was just on my hard drive and I randomly came across it. Gotta love the fakie to fakie steeze

That's the point; the footage was never released. No one saw their runs unless they were there. I think they were both on Hellbents at the time. Judging by their skis and their styles, they probably had cool smooth flowy runs, but nobody knows

hasn't anyone asked pep or andy about the runs? honestly i bet it was flowy and shit but, especially nowadays, i think itd probably be pretty underwhelming after all the build up

i know that's sorta sacrilegious to say 'round these here parts, but you know..

It was so underwellming when it happened that it was overwellming. That was the whole point. It was a bunch of zero spins, and floaty mellow spins on Hellbents. Basically like giving a big "F you" to the x-games.

So wrong it hurts.

I also want to finally publicly claim responsibility for those guys being there.

I was on the X-games selection committee for a few years, and the first time they had me they said "We want to take everything into account - movie segments, contest results, style, tech tricks - everything"

I was like "Guys, I think I'm going to really fuck up your selection process, because I have a very strong opinion about what makes the best skier."

My votes were extremely high for Pep, Pollard and Andy. My logic was that I felt that if you were judging skill, I completely believe that it takes every ounce as much skill to do a super stylish cab 3 as it does to do a big cab 10 (which was a big trick then). So I made my voice heard.

Pep and Andy made it into X that year. I think a lot of the athletes were pretty angry, and I eventually fired myself from the committee and suggested that they just start choosing everyone from competition results instead of trying to have true, deep, slow, smooth style count.

I defend my position to the core because frankly for anyone who has played Amped 2, you will know that a fucking video game can score style really high using only math, because it treats slow smooth motion as a multiplier vs. only one part of the score.

guys, i understand the entire thing. im not missing the point, i remember it happening and i thought it was cool (though i can def understand some people being pissed about it)

im just saying that that was years ago, and things have changed since then. after all this build up, if you ever see it again, i really doubt it's going to be as amazing as you remember it. some things are better left in the rose-hued nostalgic memories you already have

re: the stuff you said about the selection, bishop, that's really cool. i also agree with your point about the amped 2 system haha. quantifying anything in skiing lends itself to problems though haha

Haha, epic comparison!

.]Amped 2 might be the best video game I have ever played. I still play it fairly regularly.

It's disappointing how awful Amped 3 was though. I still never was able to get ranked better than #3 in the world in Amped 2.
