Andy Mahre skiing the back nine with no poles? what do you all think about this? personally i think its hella chill if someone can make it look madesteeze in the park, but in the back country poles are kind of part of the sport...i dont know, there are threads about it i know but wanted to know what ppl thought SPECIFICALLY of Andy mahre going no poles steeze in the back nine

well...we'll see if he can win. which he prolly wont. if he can pull off great skiing in the steeps with no poles...more power to him

word i know he kills it hardcore no poles im gettin at i thought it was interesting hes goin back nine no poles, personally i can understand park no poles for sure cause ive tried it a few times here and there but BC is a lil beyond me but if he pulls it off like the other dude above me said, more effin power to him thats sic

andy does whatever he wants. i personally think it would be way harder, soo more props. i just cant wait to see the footy

i wanna see that switch 3!

Poles or no poles, it's sick, if you can make it look good then mad props.

If he doesn't want to use poles thats fine by me, he seems to make it look pretty good. However, he should not get any extra credit for skiing backcountry without poles. Style is all it is.

Andy Mahre switch pow slash no poles

props to andy, as always, i dig the no poles, and in teh last 2 years i have gone back and forth between poles and nopoles, most of the time without. but i do think that most people that rock no poles look whack. you have to have a certain style and do a certain group of tricks. and most of teh people that rock no poles dont have this down.

if you are on this site...and you ski without poles.. and you name isnt

yeah, i mean if you NEVER ski with poles, its not gonna be harder. its just your style. BUT he might be able to make certaian tricks look way cooler. or something.

About 5 or 6 years ago I knew a ski boarder who was really good. He switched to skis but didnt pick up the poles. He always told me "you dont need poles to hit jumps and rails." I tried it out and it helped me a lot, not relying on poles for balance, swing weight, and timing. Of course since then I've picked my poles back up and enjoy skiing with them.

However, I feel there is something to be said for putting your poles down from time to time as a form of training. I know CVA does this, John Swett competed at the Mega Mother Hucker last year without poles. He was making large smooth grabbed cork 9s and the judges penalized him heavily for not having poles. They even told him he would score higher with poles! But Swetty held strong and did his own thing, which is always good to see.

As a filmer, I ski no poles a lot, especially this year because Im trying to film as much as possible. Ive adopted a "no-poles" style for those time, with a wide, low stance, trying to minimize arm movement. With my poles, I feel more "synchronized" with my skis, and use my arms more, especially to time high speed turns. For some reason I really prefer poles for sliding rails too. Skiing switch with no poles is the bomb, I think they get in the way of switch, I love a nice big switch carve with my hands loosely hanging in front of me, it feels so steezy and fun.

I guess what Im trying to say is poles vs. no poles both have their advantages and uses. Its cool whichever way you do it, especially if you can make it look good. Try both ways to get the most out of your ski experience, and have fun!

very well put.

What it comes down to is personnal style. This discussion has been done a million times and any thread with "No Poles" in the title should be automatically removed due to the stupid shit people put, ie. "No Poles is gay"

Poles are and will ALWAYS be a part of the sport! No poles is gay! steezy or not. with poles everything looks steezier anyway

If it looks good, thats sweet. I dont care if he has poles or not. I would rather see someone without poles who is able to make it look smoothe than someone with poles who looks sketchy, and vice versa (sp)

mhmmm i like my poles and i actually have become dependant on them over my 10 ish years of skiing

i hate skiing with out them and hate skiing without pole straps too

I'm sure andy doesn't really care what he looks like. Maybe he gets enjoyment out of not using poles?

...It's not like skiing is about enjoying yourself or anything.

having filmed with andy this season and shot the above pic on video, hemade me a true believer. i think that only a few people can do it and make it look right, by few i mean about 4(that i have seen personally). when you're skiing pow switch, poles are useless, plain and simple. just wait for andyssegment from inf media, you'll know what i'm talking about, and if you don't know, then you better ask somebody.

but i dont see the point. . if you have to work to not use them.. to get balance.. WHY?

why not just do somthing thats easier.. just adding difficulty for no reason doesnt make sense.

like i cud try to ski with waterskis on the slopes and it wud be hard and dumb, but wud people saying im working on progression?

shows how balanced Andy really is...I am sure he has read this thread and has resited commenting or contributing to this idiotic debate.

Let it die already....it is all just riding! Snowboarding/Skiing/Telemarking are ALL the same!!!!!!!

A snowboard turn si the same as a ski turn is the same as a telemark turn...no difference above the hips at all...same balance same set of skills

I am now ashamed for contributing to this thread

props to those who can ski no poles with steeze, but i couldnt do it personally and i really dont like it when kids try to look "cool" by not having poles

no poles is lame

i think poles sets skiing apart from boarding

we have limited things compared to boarding

like grinds for instance

poles are part of the sport

so basicaly

andy in my eys is trying to be a boarder

No poles is a different feeling. I challenge all skiiers to ski a day without poles. It will open up your eyes. Ski a bit of everything, park, pow, groomed, pipe, etc. You will realize what no pole skiing is about and then you are qualified to make a choice about it. Don't hate on it without trying it.

I skiied four inches of pow no poles, and it was one of the funnest things I have done on skis. I also skied our pipe no poles, and felt way backseat. Try it.

i ahte when people sayu "as long as you have fun it doesnt matter"

althought i belive this, and who cares what others think of you as long as your doing what your love, theres always one person who posts this thinking that they're the argument stopping martyr thats spreading the real truth...

but also.. what is the point of skiing without poles.. people say grabs are easier, but any decent freeskier knows that grabs arent that hard with poles once you get it,... and then all no poles is makes u loose your balance, and it allows people to confuse you witha blader

so if you are terrified of people thinking you're a blader then clearly you don't actually believe that "as long as you're having fun it doesn't matter."

In Tahoe I mostly ski - to many flats and traverses to justify snowboarding

In the backcountry I randonee - now that i am more comftable on teles I may switch to freehillin

When I go back to CO I usually snowboard - longer vert, less challenging terrain

Its funny how I had to argue about how sick skiing with out poles is but now that a pro does it people are supporting it??

really cause this thread isnt a debate numbnuts i just wanted to see what other people thought of not no poles in general, but rather andy mahre going back 9 no poles cause i know he kills it and makes it look smooth no poles but i personally would never go BC no poles itd just feel weird...just wanted to see what other people thought waynewong stop trippin
