And thats 7 for Canada!

haha but the Chinese are doing horrible compared to their population.

Canada has 7 medals, US has 65 (about 10 times) but they also have about to times the people.

the you look at China with 61 medals and 40 times the people as Canada. thats a horrible ratio.

and what percentage of the chinese population have access to training facilities, decent nutrition, or even have a remote likelihood of being scouted? that number would be only a fraction of the canadian nubmer

good point... lets just settle with the fact that Australia is kicking ass. Definitely doing the best.

a HELL of a lot of chinese people have access. Definitely not that high of a percentage like canada, but they interviewed this canadian female weightlifter, and she said how there are a million female chinese weightlifters alone. They still have a lot of people that get into the programs.

and though this wasn't technically a repost, i mentioned this in the canada got a medal thread already

Talent pool is nowhere near as important as government funding and cultural support. But I think we're missing the central question, which is, who gives a fuck about the olympics? When was the last time you watched pole vaulting or hammer throw or weightlifting? 4 years ago? That's what I thought.

oh, only the billions of people who watch care. man, haven't you learned anything in history? Olympics are damned important for the world. I don't really feel like writing it all down, but here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Games

read

and its incredibly important for a country's moral and all that crap. plus it's supposed to be a time of peace where countries get to have better relationships with each other etc

if you dont give a fuck about the olympics then you need to get cultured... who gives a fuck about T Hall winning pipe at the X-games?

the summer olympics is the only time people watch those shitty sports, but they watch them because they are in the olympics and people care about the olympics in general. the opening ceremony was viewed by 34.2 million viewers in the u.s. (thats more than the population of canada). in china, 819 million people viewed the opening ceremony.

ya.. it's 'supposed' to be a time of peace. russia - georgia thing is just douch. but in the ancient Olympics they actually stopped wars for it.

The Olympics shouldn't have anything to do with the nations. It's all become a bunch of political bullshit that shouldn't even have a place in athletics. The fact that they're hosting them in China this year shows that the organizers have absolutely no respect for the athletes themselves, what with the terrible environmental issues there, that most of the athletes have said is affecting their abilities. What I really hate is when they talk about how many medals each country has, as if it was the country that won the medal. "Canada has 7 medals now," well they shouldn't even be looking at Canada, it's the athletes that are up there on the podium, not the politicians.

I fucking hate the Olympics.

then take Phelps... he wins his 8 golds and it's all about him (like it should be) and not at all about the US.

when i was watching the gymnastics i heard the commentator saying that china picks out the girls when their like in pre k and makes them start training at 10. If this is true for the rest of the athletes, then well its not a matter of who has access to the training its more of who china picks to have access

except for the fact that they keep adding up the "USA's medals" and adding his achievements to those of his country. i would flip shit if i won gold and people kept saying my medals belonged to the country, i guess it's a good thing i'm not an olympian.

But if it wasn't for the country lots of those Olympians might not have won the medals they did. If Phelps never lived in the US but he lived in Ethiopia or something then I doubt he would even be close to being where he is because it's thanks to his country that he had the proper training and the proper facilities.

canada must feel special, i mean 1 american has more gold medals than the whole country combined. haha kidding, but not really
