An update from Switzerland

I am from Canada and I decided to spend the season in Switzerland. I

wanted to see a different ski scene, I ended up based at the resort

known as Laax.

I just moved into my new flat. It's a single room in an old swiss hotel. I'm

in staff housing on the top floor. The room is bare-bones. A sink, a

stiff single bed, a closet and a table with a hard chair. Think

Elwood's place in the "Blues Brothers" but replace the rail tracks with

a view of the swiss alps. I don't have a kitchen and I have to share a

bathroom/shower with the others in staff housing. In order to use the

internet, I have to walk into town and go to a coffee shop which has

absolutely random hours. The rent is cheap, very cheap. Perfect.

I am eating meals with the hotel staff. It's great food as its made by

hotel chefs and I can serve myself. I feel sort of alienated at the

dinner table because everyone else is working in the hotel and speaking

German. Last night, I had ham, sourkraut, mashed potatoes (with some

sort of brandy cream gravy) and fresh bread. They also had beef tongues

which I didn't try. I typically try all types of new food when given

the chance but the bumps on the top of the tongue were a bit of a

turnoff. From now on, I'll be trying any sort of crazy food that is

served. I've had beef tongue a lot before, but always in Korean BBQ,

never in 1/2 slices which show-off the tastebuds.

There really haven't been too many cultural surprises. In terms of

values, people seem very similar to those at home. Nothing like moving

to Japan. There are more freedoms here. The most notable are the

alcohol laws. Anywhere can sell beer, with a normal food license.

People can drink beers outside in public or in gondolas. Of course, the

rumors are true, Switzerland is expensive. Food is the greatest

culprit. Lunch on the mountain will run you $25. Luckily, I can eat my

dinner in hotel kitchen. Beers are $.70 a shot in the grocery store,

the cheapest drink you can buy. This also helps cut costs.

Oh, one more final note of absolute craziness. I was at a bar the other

night and the locals invited me to play a little drinking game with

them. There is a fresh log standing up on end in bar. Wedged into the

top of the stump was a hatchet. Beside the log was a box of nails.

Everyone takes a nail and taps it in with the back of the hatchet so it

is sticking out of the top of the stump. Now, this is where it gets

crazy. Everyone takes turn trying to smash their nail in using the

sharp edge of the hatchet.

Fucking crazy. You must line up from the edge of the stump, for added

difficulty. The Swiss farmers invented a game where the object is to

sit around drinking schnapps and smashing nails into a stump using the

sharp edge of a hatchet. Genius. No, wait. Insane. I asked a Swiss

local if anyone ever gets hurt playing the game, "Maybe."

Ok, let's go!

Sick. I'd really like to ski in Europe someday

So epic, I love being in Europe and will miss it in a few days. Though Im going to India which will be a true culture shock. Everything you said about Europe has been my experience as well. I love you Chamonix. I would do a cool update too but I would get the whole "Cool story Hansel" deal beacause my name is blue.

nice to hear youre having a good time. been up there today, had a great time, only like 15cm of the fresh, but got a few first tracks and it was defently awsone. will be up there tomorrow again, if i see you, ill give you a shout!

I spent all of last season in Leysin, Switzerland, about two hours outside Geneva; it was tits. I was lucky enough to spend almost 2 weeks at Laax and it definitely became my favorite resort in CH. The terrain is so expansive and you can ski freshies for like a week after it snows. Even though they didn't really get shit for snow last season I still had a few pow days there. Besides for the skiing, the apres scene was so fun, the Riders Palace holds it down and there was a decent club up the hill from there but its name escapes me at the present moment. And whatever you do, do not forget to go to the Surselva Brau brewery in Flims, I dont remember exactly how to get there but the beer is absolute DANKS and they sell it in the COOP and other markets in town get some!

ders the map, hit it up you can eat humongous pretzels and drink the choicest brews there

Now just find some Swiss bodegas and you'll have access to some of the best herb in the world. CH is definitely the chillest place I have ever been. Enjoy your winter out there.

That's dope dude ... stoked u have the balls to follow through on your plans and split to Switz solo styles....

how did you dislocate your shoulder?

hey , i live in austria (vorarlberg, silvretta nova-novapark) it's 1 hour away from laax by car - looks that they have a sick park in laax, maybe i go there once this season.

btw: the game is real fun =)

I love Switzerland, it's where I ski mainly, (I live in the UK) BUT I haven't been to Laax yet ! I seriously must go, and jea the Crap Bar is a place of legend, cant wait for the brits, if I had any time off school I'd go and hang with the UK scene out there, how far away is Zermatt from Laax ? is it ages away or not ? I'm in Zermatt in a week and a half can't wait another place to check out in Switzerland is Leysin, keep it quiet its an un-discovered gold mine, they have an awesome park there.

Keep having a great time in Switzerland!

my update from for switzland:

leaving at 8.00am tomorrow for Klosters, been snowing there for a week, meant to be bluebird for the rest of the week and next, yeahhhhhhhhh

Ahhh, I live right there actually. My flat is about a 3 minute walk from the Brewery. I'll definitely check it out sometime. I haven't had those brews yet, they're 50% more than the standard Calanda or Heffenschlossen. They're about 3 times as expensive as the generic grocery store beers too (Volg is much better than COOP).

I am not working while I'm here. It's very hard for those not in the EU to get a working visa for Switzerland. If you have a legit job lined up, you can get a visa, but other than that, you're up shit creek. You can work under the table, but that's kind of sketch. I saved money while working on the stock market and am just skiing every day here. I paid for a lot of stuff before coming over like my pass, a lot of gear, plane tickets, etc. I stayed in a hostel (Rider's Palace) for a few weeks while looking for a flat. I guess I had about $6,000 for the season. I don't think I'll need it all. Things are definitely expensive in Switzerland.

I'll be here for the Brits and Orage Open. If anyone is coming to Laax, shoot me a message and we can ski a bit together.

It snowed a bit today but I lost my wallet. Nothing is better than losing your bank card in a foreign country.

It's alright. It's better than most North American beer but it doesn't have anything on German or Czech beer.

I am drinking too much beer though, way too much.

dude, so sick to see you made it out there! Did you get in touch with Silke at Riders Palace?

See you in a month for Euro Open!
