I'll admit that I'm not terribly knowledgeable about this. But from what I've read, it was less "keeping up with the Jones" in the '80s and more "let's get all the money we can out of this system before it goes under." I mean, pouring money into "defense" is how every empire throughout history has extracted the last drops of wealth before a collapse (e.g. Rome). This post is just amateur hour and should be taken as such.
