... it depends ... good producers will sample in a creative way ... they use the sample as a raw material, like a painter uses paint and color. Finding a sample, chopping it, flipping it, EQing, filtering, layering the drums, etc. is an artform.

Listen to some Pete Rock, RZA, Premo, J Dilla, etc. hopefully you know what I mean.
