why are almost all other countries zippers on the left side of the zipper when it is unzipped, it makes so much more sense to zip a coat with your right hand, then i put on a coat from canada, and it pisses me off so much

i know some people might call you stupid.. but i just got my new jacket.. with the zipper switched... i almost wanna cry everytime i go to the end and my fingers pull off.. it's a sad lonesome feeling

I think it has something to do with like the royalty in england having zippers on their clothing first, in which a handmaid would obviously zip and un-zip the clothing, then the rest of the nobility got them the same way and by the time it had spread to the masses, they still had zippers on the left.

Now I'm guessing in America they were like screw the royalty, its all about the common man with no nobility, and when they made zippers they were like yea we should put it on the right because honestly I don't have a handmaid.

Of course this is just a guess, I have no clue.

Like Quailman said. The royalty use to have someone zip their clothes for them, so if the zipper was on the left, it would be on the person zipping it's right. Does that make sense?

This is the only one I have heard of/noticed, supposedly so when a girl buttons/unbuttons and guys shirt and vice-versa, it is the same as unbuttoning their own shirt.

I don't think zippers were invented yet when that rule was made, but it's true for buttons, so may have carried over.I don't see that having the zipper on a different side would make much difference, since once you slide the little starter into the zipper, you can use either hand to zip it up. I've never noticed what side a zipper was on.

My mens Orage jacket zipper is on the left. Would make sense though, Orage is made in Canada. LOL

i have zippers that go different ways and i never even notice the difference. i don't think it matters.

I bought a hoodie without realizing that the zipper was on the left. It took me about 3 weeks to figure out how to zip it up successfully.
