It's more a case of multiculturalism, in my opinion, and there is a large difference between the two terms. The famous example is tossed salad vs tomato soup: america claims to be the latter, but is really the former.
I think the best proof of that is how you have so many different people of various ethnicities and nationalities, yet each group typically has to have their own special title, for example african americans, irish americans, etc etc. Classing different people so extremely like that makes segregation inherent, and goes against the definition of the melting pot situation.
If you want a true melting pot, go to London. It is undoubtedly the cultural capital of the world, and there aren't ethnic classes there like you'd find in america. Everyone is the same: just fellow human beings.
When I say uncultured too, I mean that america is very inward looking, and there is only, or at the least heavy, emphasis on what america is up to, and not the rest of the world. You can see this in your news media, the way history is taught in your country, through hollywood, from your foreign policy and how you act on the world stage... the list goes on. It's quite obvious
