American isnt a nationality right?

No, it doesn't matter where you are born. What matters is what country you live in legally right now. That's who your citizenship is and what your nationality currently is.

yea go with what skierman sayed and just say your from up here in cananda. You will find that people are soo much nicer if you do

the one thing I hate about America. You ask anyone "what are you?" "Oh I'm italian , or oh I'm irish" I say fuck that you are American. I don't give a shit where your great grandparents are from, you live here you are american have some pride. When someone asks me what nationality I am I say "I am American

this is how i understand it is. if your parents are american and you are born in say italy you are part italian and american something along those lines i think

Technically, the term "American" doesn't refer to a specific nationality, although most people use it to refer to citizens of the United States of America. In actuality anyone who is from North or South America is an American. Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, Argentinians, Costa Ricans etc. are all Americans.

not true. all those Mexicans who cross the border illegally arnt American because they live in the United States. and even the people who come here legally arnt American right away you have to be in the US for a minimum of 5 years before you can be considered to be an American Citizen.

Im French my dad became an American citizen 3 months after I was born so I didnt get American Citizenship I have a green card and I can do anyhting an American can do except vote for the President. I can become American if I want with no trouble since ive lived here for about 9 years and my dad is American. but I chose not too

And if you ask someone what nationality they are, it's given that they're "American" cause you're in fucking America. So usually they're gonna say what nationality their heritage is.

That's like going into a candy store and asking if theres candy.

nationality and heritage/bloodline are very different things. for example, my nationality is Canadian...but I am physically portuguese...which makes me portuguese blood...but of Canadian nationality. If i moved to France and stayed there and got my french citizenship, i then would have dual citizenship and can say i am of french nationality as well.

but when someone asks you "what ethnicity are you?" or "what are you?" you say your bloodline..because that is what makes you. but when they ask which nationality you are, you say where you reside and what society you've been living in.

anyway, that is the correct distinction. therefore, if you have a child in italy and you are american, and you return to america to raise that child, that child is american. but the child has dual citizenship because he/she was born in italy..but the majority of ppl would say they are american regardless of where they were born if they spent most of their life in america.

so there u go...difference between heritage and nationality.

Do yourself a favor and read my post again. You just tried ridiculing me for the exact thing you wrote. If you legally live in a country, you are THAT nationality.

It's like playing for a sports team. Whatever team you are currently on, that is your nationality or team name. If you move or get traded you then take on the next nationality or team name.

First off I didnt try to ridicule you I just corrected you. your nationality is the country your a citizen of. to live in a country you do not have to be a citizen. Ilive in the United States but my Nationality is French even thought I dont live in that country.

if you come from Canada with a working Visa although you will be living in the US for a couple of years you are still considered Canadian.

im sorry if you thought it was an atack. try to consider it more as a correction

yeah i have dual citizenship but i allways tell people that i am canadian beacause thats where i live at the moment but i have australian citizenship also

no. completely wrong. you are in no way italian if both your parents are american and you are born in italy. in order for you to be "italian" you're parents would have to have immigrated to italy..which wouldnt make them american anymore

different countries have different laws when it comes to who is a citizen of their country.

in the United States you must either be born there or have a parent who is American to be considered American from Birth. to become a citizen you must have lived in the US for at least 5 years before you can get a lawyer and go to an imigration judge to plead your case. you tell him why you should get citizneship ect and he decides to grant you citizenship or not. Marying a citizen also makes you a citizen.

in France its pretty much the same thing you must be born there or you must have a parent from there. and to become French you must speak french fluently and be able to read and write in french

most Countries have the same thing.

Japan has very limited imigration. almost no one becomes Japanese. to bring up another one of my threads. you have a bigger chance of being attacked and killed by a shark then becoming a Japanese citizen (less than 5 people become Japanese) and even after that having a Japanese Passport, and citizenship (also they will be able to read write and speak fluently in Japanese since its mandatory) you will still be seen as a foreigner by most Japanese people.

although your nationality can be changed your ethnicity is part of you for life. you can lie about it but ethnicity has to do with who your parents and grandparents are and where they came from. if you go back 4 or 5 generations you get to a point in time where immigration was pretty much non existant so you can claim that as your roots.

for example my mother is from france and my dad is from Trinidad and Tobago but going back to the furthest my fathers family originally comes from Brazil and my moms family comes from Russia.

imlucky that my French side of the family has a well documented past and I can go to my grandfather ask him for a book he has and I can trace my french side all the way to the Gauls and I can trace a little bit of my Russian side.

unfrtunatly my dad's side is only through word of mouth that I can learn about that.

I know I am part Russian,French, Chinese, Brazillian, Czek, Indian, and Tirnidadian.

but if anyone asks me what I am im French and Trinidadian. and my Nationality is French.

well this little speach has definitly helped my boring day at work go a little bit faster

i was born in minnieapolis (sp?) and moved to Paris, France about 3 weeks later. I lived there for 13 years, HOWEVER - i am in no way french, except fot he fact i lived there. I have a Dutch and American citizenship (dad and mom respectively) and could get an irish passport through my mom's side of the family.

citizenship laws are crazy...especially that one american one that requires to give up any other citizenship in order to be american....hehe, oops?

yeah pretty much.

my nationality is canadian, but i look dutch because of my bloodline, so i always say that i'm dutch. actually, i'm german, belgain, dutch, and scottish. and yes, being dutch and scottish i have a reputation for being pretty cheap (except when it comes to really good friends and girlfriends).
