American Football

I think that this weekend there are two teams (new york and someone else) coming to england to play a match at wembly.

do you guys think that this is a good idea. apparently the tickets sold out real quick but there is barely any press coverage at all.

How long till liverpool, arsenal etc come to america and play

I personally think that it is bad for the games as americans barely care about football and we barely care about american football

I wonder if its Americans that bought up the tickets. I know there are a lot of expatriates in Germany at least. NFL Europa just folded too, and by the end all the teams were in Germany except for Amsterdam.

I'm fine with them branching out. I know the NFL has been marketing towards Latinos here a lot too. They played one in Mexico City a few years ago and that was pretty cool. Basketball is popular worldwide now and baseball is popular outside of the U.S. too at least in Latin America and Japan. I'm surprised American football hasn't caught on anywhere else. It's only a matter of time I guess.

Don't think 'football' will catch on here mainstream though. It's gonna take more than David Beckham for that to happen.

yes the new york giants are playing the miami dolphins sunday in london..im a huge giants fan so i think its pretty cool

personally i like watchin a good soccer/football, wutever u wanna call it, match. ever since the world cup ive gotten kinda into it. but as for the giants dolphins matchup in england, thats not one of the better games ive seen (GO PATS)

Ya, I was going to say that too. But that would be sweet if they played a real Premier League game here, it's usually just shitty exhibition games.

Yes, but only in friendlys. They are never playing their top class players for long, and they have seemingly unlimited subs from what I've seen.

In my sincere opinion though, I honestly think football is catching on here in the states. we have enough immigration from footballing countries, so I dont see why not. That, and the girls game here in the states is HUUUGE.

Watch for Toronto FC to become a force too... seriously. They are RABID up there... It sounds like a Sold out premeirship crowd every night. They also are wicked loud. The seats are much closer to the pitch than ANY all seater would be in england.

plus they fuck with whoever is doing a cornerkick by shooting streamers late in the game. its rather funny. go on youtube. check out Toronto FC.

its too bad the europeans have to watch a team like the dolphins.......they make american football look bad. The NFL shouldv'e atleast put two good teams there for publicity.

HAHA, the only press coverage is saw of this was on the Chelsea website. The Giants (maybe the Dolphins too, I can't remember) trained at Cobham (Chelsea training ground) and Micheal Strahan was wearing a Chelsea jersey.

thats a completely meaningless match/tournament to promote the brand ie get people to buy the shirts. it is not a serious match

dude we love your football i watched UEFA for a long time today...it was on our sports network, ESPN, and it was Barca v. Rangers

right, well i was answering a question. and the premiership doesnt need overseas investors like the nfl is trying to get. there is no equal in europe to the nfl, whereas (if you constitute mls as "equal") there are top flight futbol divisions across the globe. the premiership will probably never play a meaningful game here.

in other news, i head RUMORS that henry will be the next beckham mls transfer- only a rumor and i havent seen any new to back that up

Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry will NOT come to the US. Hes popular here, but not to the point where Arsenal will actually let him go. Hes too valuble, too experienced, and still far too good to let go of. Beckham's coming to America is a total publicity stunt... Hes the most public figure football (yes football.. its only futbol if your speaking espanol). America has had some other greats come through in older leagues.. Pele, George Best, Jimmy Johnstone, etc.. all three of which mentioned, I think were just as good if not better than Beckham in their day... not to mention more successful in terms of winning on the field, where it really should count...

Beckham is a prolific figure. hes had movies made about him, and starring him... something that no other athlete in the world has probably ever had. Doesnt hurt that his wife is a former (and current?), and most popular member of one of the most popular pop groups of the last ninties... bloody spice girls.

Either way... I cant see someone else like Henry coming to the US... at least not for a few years. he doesnt have what beckham has, even though he IS very popular.

I wish Henrik Larsson would though. Favourite player of all time right there... THE GHOD!

i think its a good idea for the fans but not for the players

how would u like to take a 10 hr plane ride and be tired as hell then go to london and get as soon as u get there do a bunch of interview crap then go practice the fact that they have to go all the way to london just doesnt make sense to me

o well

i wouldnt have thought first class is tiring at all!!!

you will never get a premiership match in america, they mean too much to the fans here, players wouldnt be up for it as well as they play matches twice a week

soccer (or futbol) is definitely catching on. its just not as easy to see in the states. across the pond you have games you can go to all the time. local teams, or even premier teams right near almost all the big cities. in america there are very few games to go to that are really worth it. also european fans are the greatest, they show so much love and passion for the game at the matches and i think the fans are a huge part of the amazing atmosphere of european matches.

Yeah. European games have the same sort of environment as say.. a college football game. Just, there is no student section... just cheering sections of a bunch of crazy supporter groups. Just look at teams in eastern Europe.. like Croatia... or even crazier... Istanbul, Turkey. They bring thousands of flares and practically burn down the stadium... you wont find that in america...

Well.. first off, its a fucking movie... so its not exactly correct in all aspects. and everyone in the world knows that the U.S. as well as Australia are not big in terms of football.

Also, other countries are indifferent to us.. as far as teh people are concearned. THey arent very happy with the whole Bush War, and they are also maybe a bit jealous of the US in terms of power.

Havin a yank in your football ground, which is practically SACRED among some, is an insult in so many ways.

Either way, the hobbit kicked fucking ass in that film. Especially at the end. That was fuckin priceless.
