American civil war: A big mistake?

i didnt watch the movie but lincoln didnt free the slaves because he was against slavery, he freed them because when the south seperated from the north, the slaves didnt have to be controlled by the slave owners or something like that.

i'm not sure if thats what the movie was trying to say but yeah thats wut i learned

theres probably something wrong with what i said and some one out there probably knows more than me so speak up

there were other factors that lead to the civil war besides slavory, but i forgot them.

are you from the south or something because thats a topic a southerner would bring up. i went to atlanta a while ago and they had some huge ceremony to commemorate the southerners who fought in the war at this mountain that had famous confederate heads carved into it. it was like mount rushmore, but with confederates.

civil war was inevitable, the southerners would never have given up their slaves to anything short of armed conflict, even though only a small percentage owned slaves, slavery was just so ingrained in their life style, they couldnt imagine blacks being free, that idea was just too disgusting to them. but a lot of people in the north felt the same way, they didnt agree with slavery, but only because they didnt like the plantation system, they didnt want black equality either. lincoln only freed the slaves because he felt that it would be the best thing for the post-war country. after the war the government was pretty soft on the south, and let the southern states pass some pretty racist legislation, some of which didnt get repealed till the seventies. bottom line, war was the only way, look who started the war. southerners fired on federal troops because they felt their southern plantation-oriented, agrarian, aristocratic life style was threatend. to be honest, i could imagine some states not having full equality without the civil war, and if the north hadnt been so lenient, and had kicked some ass in the south after the war, problems could have been avoided. the south needed to get fucked up big time, plain and simple

civil war wasnt fought because of slaves. it was fought because the south wanted to succeed from the north and form their own country. partially because of slavery

Abe Lincoln didn't start the war. Southern states seceding did. Does Ron Paul know any US history? The civil war was all we learned about in elementary school.

Every other western country was able to get rid of it without a war, why couldn't we?

I do happen to be from the south, but I think that those battle things they have are stupid. I am just wondering why we had to lose 600k men when we could have resolved it without bloodshed.

unfortunately war was inevitable because abolitionists were a relatively small minority. there was the small community of abolitionists, the larger community of pro-slave southerners, and the largest group of all, the apathetic southerners and northerners who just didnt care either way. every other country was able to get rid of it because the groups of people against slavery were much larger than those who supported it.

That is a good point, but the other western countries aren't as big as the U.S. and weren't divided into two sections, the north and the south, because their countries have pretty much the same climate. i do believe that we could have settled it differently though.

haha, thats a funny coincidence, that you are actually from the south

the abolition of slavery was not a cause of the war... the south leaving the union.. we learned that lincoln didn't even want to abolish slavery because with the south comming back in the union they would be uber pissed he did abolish it during the war because it was a huge asset to the confederate army.. they harvested all their supplies and everything for nothing umm i am sure there is other things about this topic that i know i just can't remeber soooooooooooooo
