Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts issued a statement saying Bush would 'go down in history as the first president to try to write discrimination back into the Constitution.'

from the same constitution that says you have the right to bare arms. no thanks, i just watched bowling for comlumbine, i say screw that constitution, it's over 200 years old, i mean things probably have changed a little since it was written, what may have been applicable to it then may not be logical or nessecary now, i think it's time it go revised, but no.....it's ok, i don't like to do things that make sense either

you guys really need to open youre eyes up to the world...bush really needs to fuckin chill out on this matter and worry a hell of a lot more on getting our troops out of iraq...we need to pull the fuck out then go back to the u.n. and ask them to help aid us in rebuilding the iraqi government...and back to the gay marriges...there is nothing wrong with being gay...technically its just right as beinging straight...its not like you choose to be gay...and if people arnt able to do this (accept that gay marriges are acceptable) the n you are the 'gay' one and need to chill out and let other people do what they wany

even though i personally dont agree with homosexuality i think they should be able to marry. the reasons being is that these couples cant sign contracts for mortgages to buy houses and stuff like that. most people dont even think about it but when most people buy a house they enter a mortgage and it makes it a lot easier to get qualified for a mortgage when you have 2 incomes instead of one. the same thing goes for loans and shit like that

alpine coybow. Nice arguement. too bad it can't be proven... I would normally tend to agree to you, being a scientifically minded person. Personally now I believe (as well as many psychologists) that homosexuality is a choice, combined with some genetics. Everyone has gay 'urges' or desires. Some people just naturally control them better. I've seen some pretty straight people turn gay due to their environment (probably genes too). But there is no 'GAY GENE', thats a proven fact. genes can have an effect on a person becoming gay,people with more artisic and open personalities (through their genetic makeup, AND through their environment) tend to be more open to letting their homosexual urges take form. But people still have a choice (how do you explain bisexuals). I believe people that are 100% gay full out are influenced more by their genetic makeup and people who are boarderline or bisexual are influenced more by their environment, with crossover in both cases. But anyway I still stick to the theory that homosexuality is a flaw in genes that has spread because of the environment (you dont see increased number of gay animals do you?), so I am against gays. However I'm all for human rights, moreso then I am against gays, So I believe gays deserve all the rights that straight people do. So let them marry and be on equal grounds.

With all personal bias aside, you guys need to try to look at this for what it is. The day we throw out the constitution, is the day America falls into destruction. Tell me something, how has America grown to be the largest superpower in the world? It must have nothing to do with the laws and principles written about in these documents, right? Wrong. These are the documents that are the backbone behind our country and if we were to turn away from the very thing that has made us great, then we will fail.

So, let me get this. We should throw out/change the constitution because its 200 years old and our society is constantly changing, so it can't possibly be applicable today, right? That's a weak arguement. Society may change, but good strong principles and ethics for success never change and need not change. Confuscious lived hundreds and hundreds of years ago, yet his teachings and idioms are still revered to this day. How is it that he spoke thousands of years ago, and yet it applies to us very much still? Yes, some specifics need to be adjusted over time as the way we do things change, but the UNDERLYING principle is unchanging. And I believe that the Founding Fathers had enough foresight to see how America could grow so they wrote the Constitution with flexibility and yet rigidity in order to encompass all times.

We have 27 amendments not 17.

The gay marriage amendment won't pass. Theres been 10,000 (i'm pretty sure that's the number) tries to amend the constitution and only 34 have even been up for ratification. It probably won't happen.

J.D._May, I'm sorry but I don't see your point. I don't see how calling gays a 'flaw' would have anything to do with my human rights. Maybe I didn't articulate it so heres is a better example. A child born with a mental condition because of a flaw caused by a mother doing drugs durring pregnancy. I still think these children deserve the same rights as the rest of society (same with gays). It would be different if I said they were a flaw and should all be shot. If you still think my point is 'pathetic' then my all means explain why...

^ good point. I actually don't plan to have children so Maybe that hits close to home. But most people have an instinct to reproduce and that keeps society going. Maybe my instincts will kick in later in life and I will want children, I don't know. perhaps thats 'gods' way of population control, same with gays. maybe they arnt 'flaws', maybe they are just an elaborate form of population control, nobody knows for sure. But in keeping with my arguement, You still have the choice to reproduce, gays don't. So if it came down to it you could keep the population going, gays couldnt.

I should add that, if the inability to reporduce is your argument for why they shouldn't be able to marry, then you're effectively arguing that impotent people shouldn't be allowed to marry either (which happens frequently).

^Well anyways, I'll just put in a ast word then and say that just because one has sex with a woman, doesn't immediately mean he isn't gay anymore. Closet cases are a good example. There are many instances where people who don't want to admit they're gay try to act straight before they come to terms with it. You are more than the sum of your actions. Anyways, I guess that's the end of that discussion.

i hate when people say that its been proven that theres no gay gene, why would there be its a stupid idea, sexuality is determined the same way any other part of ur personality is, part heredity, and part environment, there are many genes that come together to make youwho u are, not one single gene

and about homosexuallity being unnatural, exlain ur definition of unnatural to me, anything on earth has to be natural, if its not natural what is it, everybody seems to think that humans and everything produced by humans are unnatural, but all the matter was allready there, all we did was manipulate it, saying a car is unnatural is like saying a beavers damn is unnatural

First of all, I'd like to congradule aoe and J.D for having a civilized arguement on this site (doesn't happen often).

My opinion on this topic is that homosexuals should be able to marry. 'Why not?' is my question to all those who oppose it. Yes it may go against the traditional family, the church etc. but we are in the 21st century and these old-fashioned ideas should be put asside for fresher ones (i.e gay marriges). I respect anyone's opinoin and beliefs on this issue nut it needs to be looked at from both sides and it might not hurt to put yourself in a homosexual's shoes for a moment and think about it.

I thought we both made some good backed up points and ended on pretty level ground. Obviously neither one of us can be right but can anybody actually be right? And I said genetics played a role in determining sexual preference. Like I said its a combination of environment and genes (genes playing more of a role in people who are 100% gay (a 6 on the 7 point scale by kinsey). And biological factors have never been proven to predict gayness. But recently (90's-now) have shown that identical twins are more likely to be gay then fracturnal twins, and even moreso then adopted siblings. So I agree biology plays a part but it has never been shown that there is a gay gene. You claim to respect other members but you were pretty quick to call me a dumbass. If you were talking out of your ass and just didnt agree with my opinion then maybe you would like to revise your statement. If you know what you're talking about then go ahead and back it up. prove me wrong I don't mind. JD had a different opinion then me, I didn't go and call him a dumbass, infact I think he shows alot of intelligence. One reason I am persisting on this issue is because I'm doing a physc minor and am very interested in this side of psychology. I can go and quote facts from my text all day but I can see that obviously I'm getting flammed pretty hard on the issue even though i've backed up my points, so I think i'll just drop it...

Anyways, aoe, it's awesome you're doing a psych minor, because I love seeing how my own philosophical educational background measures up with other disciplines. They always take completely different angles on issues... things I'd never thought of before. It's not like anyone ever changes their mind as a result of arguments on the internet, the only point to them is expressing a view and self-expansion. So this has been enlightening.
