correct me if im wrong but i think most theories are that it does eventually end at some point because it is ever expanding, but i guess the real answer is we dont really know for sure?
 
nothing, according to most scientists atleast... space is everything and it is expanding into nothing... yea its wierd
 
Its kind of hard to conceptualize. The universe is expanding. But it is not expanding into anything. There is nothing outside. The universe is infinite in space, and maybe even time. And if the critical density ratio =1 or is

I'm pretty sure that if you go in a straight line through the universe you will end up where you started. read "a short history of nearly everything" by bill bryson. suchhhh a good read, and it explains a lot about life, planet formations, extinctions, and what's going on now.
 
imagine how many other life forms there are out there. it's absolutely mind boggling. I also read about a theory that there are parallel universes mirroring our life/planet, and they said that maybe if you nearly got in an accident that could kill you, in the parallel universe, because time is a little different, you may have actually been killed. Crazy to think about
 
The best explanation I've ever heard of how/if space ends is that the answer is beyond the thinking power of the human brain.

Just as a dog will never understand how a car runs, the human brain will never be able to fully understand how/if space ends.

That brought a little bit of closure to it for me... but it's still insane to think about sometimes haha
 
Well the universe is mathematically infinite, so thats kind of the idea. Look up "critical universe". Anyways im stoked on this news but it really isnt that incredible. We havent been able to directly photograph a planet but as far as I know we have detected the other ones through "silhouettes" or something of the sort. Either way this doesnt tell us a lot. Good press though, maybe NASA will stop wasting 60% of their budget on fucking space exploration sometime soon. I think in the next few years NASA is putting out a new telescope designed for detecting planets, should yield much better results than we have had in the past. The only way you will end up at the same point is if we exist in a closed universe where the critical density ratio is greater than one. Basically, if our universe can be mathematically expressed as a sphere then that theory holds true.

The consensus right now, though is that we live in a 'critical' universe, which is basically a flat plane. You will just go on forever because since space expands, essentially, faster than light, you will never reach an end, if there is one.
 
I forget who but some physicist calculated the probable distance between our universe and these other hubble volumes, something like 10^36 lightyears or something. Id have to look it up, anyways, its fun stuff~
 
i just threw some numbers into the calc and according to my calculations it would take about 145 days to get to mars from earth going about 10000 mph when earth and mars are at their closest. that seems like NOTHING to me when you consider the possibilities! whats keeping us from landing there? we have the technology don't we? i realize it would cost billions, but, again, the reward would by far outweigh the cost....

People shouldn't even try to understand the physics behind the universe. The mathematics behind the physics is so mind boggling, it's ridiculous. At one time, there are probably only like a couple hundred people on Earth, if that, that can understand the math.

I have to disagree with you. Noone knows where the universe is expanding into, or if we even are expanding for sure, everything is just an 'educated guess'. The whole everything expanding into nothing is basically a sort of oxymoron. Yet people tell us thats whats happening...shits nuts. You could go on for days debating this stuff. One thing i wanna do before i die is read a shitload about sapce, eat a ton of shrooms then just sit there and talk about it with someone....and record it. It would be amazing
 
I was disagreeing that this type of physics is not meant to be understand, but yes, actually we do know that the universe is expanding. Maybe not what it is expanding into, but the evidence is substantial for the theory that the universe is expanding~
