Am I about to be majorly embarrassed

my first rail jam is tomorrow and I can’t do any complicated tricks on rails, have I made a grave mistake?

would welcome some basic creative trick ideas

most recent jam i participated in there was one chick competitor who also didn’t have anything complicated yet was stoked the whole time

everytime i’ve ever competed in a rail jam, it more felt like a sesh with the homies than anything. everyone competing is just so happy to be there and the hype is constantly shared. even in finals when things are cutthroat people are still fistbumping, hyping each other up, etc.

be open for conversation and don’t be afraid to go up to people, everyone is there for the same reason. fuckin shredin. you’ll have a great time

Attempt some hand drags and safety slides. I suck at swaps but do those all the time and honestly think they look better sometimes

Just being female and participating in a rail jam is already badass, not embarrassing. I’ve seen too many rail jams with zero to just about no girls in them.

there’s nothing to worry about, just go and have fun and try your best! Everyone will be stoked for you!

Honesty it’s not even about winning. The hype at rail jams is just something else, just think of it as a normal session and you’ll be all good.

Having competed in rail jams, I didn't notice other people unless they were doing insane stuff or they were my homie. You'll be fine, and the atmosphere may pump you up to try some stuff you wouldn't otherwise.

fuck no. People will be hyped to see you try any trick that's new for you, or to see you land whatever trick you've been putting work into. good luck with the jam!

y’all I really appreciate everyone who took the time to leave a positive comment, definitely made me feel a lot better. I’m not worried about winning or losing just don’t want to look out of place. Just gonna go and focus on having fun like people suggested :-)

I’ve competed in only one rail jam in my life.

It was seriously fun and the atmosphere kinda builds on itself. Just go out there and have fun. People will be stoked to see you getting stuff regardless.

I'd hate to be a judge for a lady's rail jam because it'd be so hard to determine which tool to use in order to determine the winner....

Do I bring a coin and flip it? A magic 8-ball? Or do you go with the classic rock-paper-scissors?

This is so true.

And with you being out there, other girls will see and hopefully participate in future ones.

Have fun!

Honestly just a good opportunity to get out on the sticks, have some fun, practice your $hit, meet some new homies and learn from

them. No pressure to perform

or ski a certain way at all.

grab your skis or hand drag on the rail. Hop before the end of the rail and nose or tail tap the end. Front 2s out are super easy. "rock the boat"-slide your skis back and forth on the rail. 0 swap-just a hop in the middle of the rail. Use all the features, go fast.

A 0 swap over a kink looks super dope especially when you really pull your knees up and slam your skis back down

guys we finally got an unhinged skierman comment. everyone can pack up and go home now.

best decision ever, no mistake. You'll have so much fun. Rail jams are the best thing to participate in, no matter your skill level. Hope it goes well!

You can throw in some tokyo drifts, butter/presses/manuals, ollies/nollies/1's/0's, hand drags, or some swerve before/after any rail tricks for some added spice. I'm not sure how that would work with scoring, but should be able to get you some creativity points at the very least.

Even if you only slide each rail, every person in the crowd will still be thinking "damn I wish I could do that"

No, they'll be thinking, "Damn, I wish I could hit that" because the crowd will be a bunch of 13-year-old horny boys that had never seen a woman hit a rail before.

Rail jams are a vibe. Just participating is sick. If youre feeling a harder trick or something new everyone has your back. Idk there's something about it. Have fun dont stress it.

Just do a small disaster on to every small feature and land switch sometimes, just over the rail and just tail tap it as you go over.

but all in all nobody really cares at rails jam, even if you’re out after the first cuts just be there for the vibes.

Rail jams r just fun. Don’t sweat any of it. It’s possible to end up being the best by default and get a random W if not that many heads pull up. Best of luck holms

Try to think of it like a preseason session on a rail with the homies and some other crews. Don’t know if you’ve ever been to the bone zone in big cottonwood, but the coolest thing is that you’ll have people learning to slide a rail for the first time sessioning the same feature as a guy on his way to x games. Nobody cares as long as the vibe is good, you pull your weight with a shovel, you’re having a good time, and are pushing yourself a little. Everyone respects people that safely push themselves, nobody cares what level you’re at now

this turned into one of the most wholesome threads that I’ve experienced on NS. to everyone who left an encouraging comment or a trick suggestion - thank you :-)

so I went and had lots of fun. there were some dope skiers and boarders there, including some girls who were throwing down.

I started skiing in 2019 so I’m still new to it all and learning as I go - hopefully in another year or two I’ll have some more tricks up my sleeve.
