Alta

Whats the real reason for Alta's not letting snowboarders in?

I've heard a lot of different things and was just wondering what the real reason is

I dunno theres lots of theories, one is preserving the "skiing" experience without snowboarders having swearing contests in the lift lines, but that kind of went out when skiers decided to start acting the fool.

Another reason is how they side slip chutes and push all the snow to the bottom and jsut generally trash snow (beaters) But beater ass skiers who like making 50 turns down a straightline chute or just butch fall lines do just as much damage.

I like it because it keeps more people off the mountain, besides there is a ton of hiking and traversing at alta and snowboards are ill equipped for this kind of travel, it's a skiers mountain set up to be an inbounds backcountry experience with a multitude of terrain types and features available.

Because Alta would suck for snowboarders. we are strong about keeping it skiers only, I ski with mainly snowboarders at PC and Brighton but its not a place for snowboardders.

its because alta is owned by a bunch of rich bastards that dont want any shinanigans at their resort. alta doesnt care about numbers/business. its just a place for a group of old men to have fun. we should be lucky their sharing it with public skiers.

whole style changes for boards, roads must be different and so must traversing in general, also does make numbers goes through roof.

Yes be thankful...enough riders of all types get at it pre-season and after-season to know that it would be great for anyone who loves snow...

alta is a special place, not to be ruined by snowboarders. and the lay out does not favor boarders, it favors hardcore skiers hwo are willing to travers for 15 mins or hike for a good bit.

its like mad river, although it is a little harsh, snowbaorders really kind of ruin the atmosphere for other skiers, they come in acting all hard core, and it just ruins the experience. i think htats why mad river doesnt have a park too. but its also a tourist thing. only 4 other mountains in the US dont allow snowboarders, its kinda a rare thing people want to experince

Unless a snowboarder has a splitboard 90% of the terrian they would have to take there boards off and hike the traverse. It would just trash all the traverses

I think any bump dedicated mountain like mrg can't really allow snowboarders, because the timing for bumps is different on boards or skis. I think alta doesn't want bad boarders who think they are sick and scrape all the snow off of chutes and stuff. I love alta, but unfortunately my snowboarder friends (who are not the bad, scrape snow off type) can't enjoy it.

I think the resorts that don't allow boarders are:

Alta, Mad River Glen, Deer Valley, Taos Ski Valley, and (I'm really not sure) some place in colorado, maybe Aspen Highlands or something. I don't know about the last one, and would appreciate help.

they ruin the steep glades...plain and simple

they just ride down on their heel the entire time.. becuase they went down a trail to hard for them.. so it pushes the snow down too.. which just sucks

some reasons I think...

1. old people, they ski there, alot of them own it, and its always been that way

2. mostly traversing but all around mountain travel, specially becuase booting on certain parts of the traverses makes the slope alot more avalanche prone, and alta requires alot of pushing in some places when its deep, steep to flat - steep to flat, terrain flattens out in alot of areas

3. skiers, if they are good, when they go down the fall line they push snow across the hill, boarders push it down, snow stays better longer, but becuase its so good it goes fast, alot of alta locals, and weekends(most of the time)...its called powder half and hour

but alta still kicks ass, the terrain has so much to offer

You can find plenty of powder if you know where to look and are willing to explore. I found untouched powder all day when I was there in Feb. It took some looking, but was certainly worth it.

I'm really torn about it actually. I love to snowboard but i respect peoples right to do what they want. If they want to keep Alta all skiers forever, I respect their dedication to tradition. These comments that boarders ruin mountains however are completely bogus. As Ice-Is-Scary said, a bad skier does as much damage to powder as a bad boarder.

It sucks that I cant ride there but its not a bad thing, we are losing our traditions in this country under the opression of pop culture and uber-consumerism. If Alta feels it can maintain its tradition and stand up to the sands of time by not allowing snowboarding, then they have the blessing of myself and my fellow boarder friends.

I think i should change my signature to read "God Bless Alta"

Here is the deal -

Snowboarders RUIN steep terrain.

Any athletic person can learn to sideslip in a few hours...once you can sideslip you can go down nearly any ski trail. I ski at Alpine and the more easily accesed steeper terrain is destroyed by boarders every pow day.

Snowboarders ruin traverses

Snowboarders ruin steep terrain

In regards to steep and dangerous terrain you are far more likely to have a snowboarder get in trouble than a skier due to the ability level differences.

The top level riders are getting the bum end of the deal. A good snowboarder should not be denied access to a mnt like Alta. But for every one good rider you have 99 trolls who suck and would clog up the mnt's traverses and ruin the steeps with their sideslipping.

doesn't really matter that they don't allow boarders. the fact is, and has been stated already, that to get to the goods at alta - you have to traverse, skate, and hike. not just a couple of runs - a ton of the core terrain is only accessible from traverses and the like. boarders would have a rough time. same reason why in mineral basin at snowbird, no boarders take the horseshoe all the way around to the bookends - the terrain is killer but just too hard to access for boarders.

Mad River doesnt have a park mainly cause of the amount of work it would require, coupled with the lack of outside support. Most of the people in charge support a park in theory, but actually getting it to happen is a whole other story.

sorry but thats not true, unless you include side stepping, which there are some spots like east castle and goin back to rocky. the high t only takes a minute or two to get across to where they got that rubber shit on the ground next to the tree.

it def is not set up for boarders though, someone said they'd have to take their boards off and hike on the traverse, which is true, brighton's traverse to get to the rock gardens is a perfect example.

the worst has already been said: boarders and the "heel side slide" down chutes and entries into them. fuck that.

om the high T is one example, it also depends on how high up u try to stayt, u can angle downward on the travers and be there in no time at all, but there a lot of very long traverses and some hikes at alta.

yo chris it may only take 1 minute to get to piss pass(where the rubber is) on the High T. but thats only good skiers, that thing get clogged up sometimes and gets so bumpy, but fun, specially after piss pass I've almost run into so many people. I've even ran into people on the cahterines traverse. gapers legs are weak, that can hold on the whole way and haul ass. gapers at alta suck, boarders would make it so much worse...people would be runnin into others all over the place, specially with all the fat twins shootin up a shit load of snow behind them, I can't see shit sometimes goin across the high - t cuz one of my buddies is 4 feet in front of me on a pow day blowin a huge cloud up...

^^switchin, word em up.

haha funny didnt know it was called piss pass. yeah dude sux bein behind buds in pow w/ twin tips. i got 3 buds who all have jp's (tail higher than tip, like gotamas)gets annoying sometimes.

yeah beaters at alta. if you take high t to the top of highboy, then drop in on right towards the nest, theres a small drop (20 ft air early season)into open area b4 the trees. theres a traverse right under it, on two occasions i've skimmed the tops of beaters' heads takin it. thought for sure i was gonna do more damage.

word fuckin beaters, but thats how the resort makes all its money, so without em you and i couldnt ski everyday for relatively cheap. oh well
