Alta/PC Trip Advice

Whaddup NS,

Heading out to SLC in late February and am lookin at AirBnB's right now. Thinking of staying in south Salt Lake somewhere as we are going to Alta/Snowbird and PC. Was gonna stay right in PC but saw you can't get to Alta without goin all the way around back to SLC haha.

My question is how often does the road to Alta close? I see on their site that they have the road status just like they do lift/trail statuses, making me think it closes often. Would we be better off staying right near the resort the days we are riding Alta as opposed to SLC? Or is it really nothing to worry about?

Thanks!

I'd say if you can find comparable lodging prices then stay near the resort just in case. The canyon is very rarely closed the whole day when it is though

Id stay in slc incase it snows, not usually bad but coming from pc to the cottonwoods in the snow will suck. Would suggest staying somewhere close to those mtns and if youre not using a car with snow tires and it snows, youll have to hitchhike or take the bus. Hopefully by then we'll have even more snow and the danger isnt bad.

A bus goes from the base of Alta to the resort. You can take that if you are worried about driving up there.

Never heard of the road closed, sometimes a cop will make sure you have chains though.

Driving to park city is so easy. I-80 is a 5 lane freeway there a short distance from the airport. Way better then the BS people in Denver deal with to get to the resorts (I-70 and distance).

just like Alta, there’s no park at deer valley but you should go there ideally on the first or last day, it will spoil you.

LCC usually closes early morning when it dumps overnight, which happens regularly, but in most cases, the road opens by 8am. In some rare instances, the canyon can stay closed for an entire day if it really dumped and keeps dumping to the point that they can't guarantee safety, but it's very rare, so I wouldn't worry about it.
