Alta and Newschoolers

So over new years, I'm making a trip out to Alta. I've only ever skied UT once and it was at the Canyons. Stoked on some new terrain (and hopefully getting a few more days on my YLE's).

That being said, I don't always keep up on ski politics. I know Alta is a skiers only resort. I've seen a few documented videos of Alta skiers just being complete pompous douche bags towards boarders. I assume not every Skier at Alta is like that.

I imagine the predisposition of hate towards boarders has to do with 1 of two things (or both):

1. The presumption that all boarders are dicks

2. The age old supremacy mindset of boarding v. skiing

This got me thinking.

Since one could argue Newschoolers and boarders share a similar interest in their riding technique (and appearance at that), how are Newschoolers received/viewed at Alta? Has anyone had any negative experiences skiing Alta as a "Newschooler?"

Obviously, it should all boil down to respect gets respect, but I'm curious if the stereotype receives any hate.

If you go to alta you're not gonna wear a 4xl tee you tard. You're there to ski, not ski park

if you wore a tall tee and baggy ass snowpants, had park skis and full tilts on your feet, you would probably get made fun of yeah.

however, since you're skiing on powder/all mountain skis, most likely have gear better than a 4xl hoodie, and maybe even some all mountain boots, you should be fine.

honestly there really aren't that many dicks at alta. the biggest problem i see at alta are tourists who come there because they think alta is the best thing ever but really suck at skiing and hate boarders for no reason. oh and grumpy old dudes

It would pain me if you were judged on your equipment vs. riding skill.

Though its the opposite side of the spectrum, its just as lame as someone being judged for being a gaper in the park for their clothing.

There are people who will judge you at every mountain based on your appearance, whether you're wearing baggy pants, or a spandex suit, or directional skis, or goggles over the helmet. Alta is no different, but the level of skiing is generally higher there than at more "casual" mountains, so a certain level of respect exists for people who look like they take skiing seriously. It's all the same game.

Never had a bad experience looking like a park skier at Alta, although the locals complain about the weather twice as much as we do in the PNW.

Alta is put together with three types of people

-The dood thats been there since the place opened, probably started as a patroller, tho is now an iconic ski bum, lives in the canyon, SHREDS.

-The idiot tourist who LOVES ALTA oh my gosh how fun is the rope tow.

-Powderhounds like ourselves, who make the pilgrimage to ski some of the best inbounds terrain the lower 48 has to offer.

many people wont understand why you look "like one of those hoodlums!" with your baggy shirt and all that. just wear a normal jacket and go ski man altas a sick ass place.

Went there last spring with some friends and family. We all only have park skis and we got a foot of fresh the day we skied Alta. It was a crazy good day but my friends did ride up with one douche who was giving them shit for having park skis. It wasn't even provoked. My friend just started up some small talk with the guy and he went full-blown asshat on them.

Other than that we met some chill people and I saw many Keep Alta Weird shirts which basically says to me that guy was a small minority.

I'm curious as to what "full-blown asshat" entails...

No one will really give a shit as to what you look like. I've skied spring conditions in a big tall sweatshirt before and all that was said to me was "Why is your sweatshirt so big?" I explained, he told me it was dumb to which I agreed and then we laughed about it and that was that.

You have to realize people like Wiley and Durtschi ride there all the time in their XL saga jackets other skiers do the exact same. You won't be the first and certainly won't be the last.

Don't complain about the lack of park and pray for snow and you'll feel right at home

ENJOY it Alta is a very special place

I am a midwest park rat, i dont own a legit coat, I dont have brakes on my skis, I look like a homeless bum who managed to find himself on a chairlift. I dont rip. I make the annual alta pilgrammage every year. Its worth every penny. But everytime i go to alta i have the time of my life, everyone is there to have fun, just as much as you are. So get your ass out there and have some fun. Ride your line masterminds or your dps lotus. A skis a ski, you can make anything out of any condition with the right attitude.

Hope you have fun!

I wasn't complaining about a lack of park. We didn't make a trip to Utah to hit rails. And we had two of the best powder days I've ever skied. But this guy was just being arogant about how dumb we were for having park skis and how we could never dream of skiing the lines he had been skiing all morning. My friend continued to try to be nice and talk about how nice the day was and how we were just stoked to be out there. The guy continued to brag about how great of a skier he was and how we probably couldn't hit anything (we were basically just exploring everything and having a blast). My friend then joked with him like oh well if you don't think we can handle your spots why don't you just show us where you've been. He went on to say that he would never show us his secrets and bullshit like that.

And I'm aware other people wear saga and other "park" gear out there. He didn't make fun of how we looked. He just judged us based on our skis and took it way too far when all my friends wanted was to chat on the lift. Like I said before he was the minority there.

Same. When we went there, I said if they get X amount of inches that night I'd use my fat skis. But it didn't get that much snow, but I still should have wore them. Some lady on the lift laughed at me but whatever, I killed it. Don't judge somebody's skiing ability on their skis, or what they wear. Too bad though, since I had skinny skis I couldn't get good speed to hit those nice kickers around the mountain

Conversation like this just remind me of early '09 T-Wallisch discussing the sciences of wearing tall tees whilst backcountry skiing.

I'll let you guys know how it goes! Even all mountain shredding, I still will probably stand out as a Newschooler.

Keep the stories coming!

Hahaha that dude sounds like such a goon. I've never met anyone like that skiing but there are assholes everywhere, so it's not that surprising that a couple of them ski.

Nobody cares, not here at Alta, not in Japan. Just fucking ski

this. why do you feel scared to ski alta, OP? no one is going to give you shit unless you deserve it by bringing it upon yourself. don't be a dick and enjoy LCC.

A. Tons of bros wear tall t's at Alta.

B. The people that will be judging you are of no consequence. Ignore them and go have fun. -credit to heff(taken out of context).

C. If you stay off the main traverses around the mountain and/or avoid middle aged guys wearing high end puffy jackets and mountaineering gear you will encounter little to no hate

No where in this thread did I say I was sacred to ski Alta.

But I do have plans on being a dick. Should I ski somewhere else?

You said you were scared when you made a fucking thread about the possibility of you being judged at Alta you tard. Don't be so fucking self consious and just go and ski.

Also what the fuck is wrong with you if you are gonna try to be a dick. Get the fuck out of here

Anti snowboarders in 2014. I definitely wouldn't expect them to be the most progressive folk.

Hell, powder skis were pretty much "how do we make our skis float like snerrberrders do through the powder?"

I hope when Jesus returns that place is swallow'd by the earth. You years of oppression of God's chosen people will not go unpunished.

Idk, plenty of other places to go but it doesn't make sense to me.

Also mono boars are cool, just not snerrberrds. Makes sense.

Alta is long lift lines

The snow gets really tracked out

A million bad skiers on fat skis go for christmas and make the worlds worst moguls

There is no park

The locals suck

No snowboarders

Enjoy the visit but its not worth going back

Hahaha. Yeah, go to snowbird instead. The lift lines are nonexistent, no one goes there for Christmas, the park is HUGE, there's snowboarders, and there's even a gondola/lift to the very top so the gapers don't even have to work to ruin the good snow!

Go ski and have fun... nobody can hate on that! (If you ski good enough you can potentially meet Miley, as proven by Gus)

well, you did ask us if anyone had a negative experience at Alta for being a park rat, which kind of implies to me you are a bit worried to ski there because someones going to make fun of you. so yeah, I think you're kinda scared to ski there. its fine. no big deal. worse things have happened to people there. just go out and have a blast. Alta has some of the best in-bounds terrain in the world, I think.
