Alpental death

Today a 16 year-old snowboarder died in the backcountry of Alpental. He jumped off a (I think) small cliff and landed on his head. Anyone know if there were rocks or if he just broke his neck?

so much death talk!

But honestly, I think that it is good that we talk about death. We have to remind ourselfs to not take stupid risks that will get us killed. We must know our limits and never pass that line unless we know can cross it.

The kid was actually not in the legal back country and not even in the normal boundaries of the ski area. He was found to the skiers right of strawberry hill past the permanant out of bounds line pretty far back in the woods around the base of shot 8, trying to find freshies on chair 1 or something at about 3:00. He went off about a 30 ft cliff and went head first into the sno and apparently suffocated. His friends say that is was so hard get him out that they had to pull him out by his snowboard and showed no signs of a pulse or breathing. I know this because my dad was the patroler that pronouced him dead at the scene when we should have been doing the sweep of the backcountry (which was my of my best days of the season). It goes to show you that deep snow can be very deadly like in this case and permanent rope lines should be taken seriously because they are there for a reason.

well would the base of shot 8 actually be considered OB? i mean i dont think he would have to cross any ropes if he traveresed high enough. Well i guess that would still be OB. Either way its a terrible thing to happen I cant believe that happened in my backyard!

Holy shit dude....thats scary. We were just there. And man htat snow was deep to....it was probably for like only a second...but the one time I feel forward into that bank I was stuck in the snow head first. It was hte scariest thing I have ever experienced on the hill in my life...and I have been through soem shit. Man...that just opens my eyes a bit to how careful you have to be. Never ski alone for one, and always be prepared. Be careful out there everyone.

Peace,

Matt

does anybody know if he went off the cliff on purpose? and also was he wearing a helmet? maybe he got nocked out and thats why he couldn't get out of the snow by himself and get some air.

I dont think he got knocked out, the snow was soooo deep I think he just suffocated
