All my friends suck

Yesterday was a blower pow day, which we don’t get very often in Tahoe. I was so so stoked, and then, first run off of headwall at Squaw(palisades) I see sunbowl is completely untracked, so we head over there. There’s ice underneath but it wasn’t punishing as long as you were confident, my friends rag dolled like 4 times, and then when we hit the traverse track at the bottom they got stuck and had to walk out, leaving me waiting for 10 minutes, now we’re in really mellow terrain with some cliffs to our left and my homie almost falls off. Pow day ruined, I have to stick to the most mellow terrain and cater to them. My question is how do I find some better homies to shred with? All my homies are so scared of falling they never progress, and I’m not being pushed to try stuff either, and it’s really putting a damper on the season. Anyone else deal with this?

maybe you should be a better friend and help your buddies out, you looking for a quick solution to skiing with better skiers, but it ain’t like that

I can’t help them, they want to stay within their comfort zone, which is totally fine, they’re still my friends and I love em, it just puts me in a shitty spot wanting to progress and only riding with people that don’t want that. It seems like everyone on here has a group of homies that push them and I’m looking for how they found that group

Just tell them that you are going to do a few runs on your own next time and you'll do some runs with them in the afternoon / meet up with them for lunch beers. If they are your friends they should be understanding. The saying "no friends on a powder day" is somewhat true at times.

If you consume enough skiing and make it obvious you ski your bound to meet other skiiers

Man… I’ve kinda learned that if I want to ski at my own speed and on my own terms, then I’m skiing alone with headphones in. I’m not checking texts from friends or nothing. These are the days that I get the most laps in and am able to ski for 6-8 hours in a day with no distractions. and hit whatever lines / features I want. Maybe end up skiing with a cute boy. Who knows where the day might take me! Lol

I get it though. I have friends who are sick skiers but only come up and want to spin 5 laps and head home. Or want to stop every 30 minutes to smoke a joint and slam a beer.

Or have other girlfriends that I ski with but it ends up turning into a hot gossip sesh with minimal skiing lol. Which is fine. I love my girls. But I don’t expect to be ripping at full speed spinning park laps on those days.

I’ve also wasted a lot of time trying to motivate and help people who have no intension or the courage to step outside of their comfort zone. I’d rather ski alone than waste my time with that kind of attitude.

Idk. I can relate. But you gotta find a way to work with your friends. Or go ski alone/find new friends.

Skiing alone just sucks because of safety reasons (skiing near tree wells on a pow day/exploring new terrain alone)

Take the singles line even if your in a group. It’s faster so you get more laps and you can meet new cool people to ride with.

post some flyers around town saying that you're hosting tryouts for new ski friends- just be ready for a hundred redbull + monster athletes to fight for the opportunity

Now that’s an idea I can get behind

I understand if you were skiing with a girl having to wait for them but you gotta bail dude. Even when its me and 1 other if they don't keep up and there is pow its best we meet later at the bar.

Typically homies want to go their own pace just like you.

i have very few friends that ski/snowboard and being in high school, it’s hard to really set a time to hit the mountain together with the ones that do ski and snowboard. even when we do get to ride together, they’re not very good and often stick to blues, so no powder searching on double blacks. often times though, i end up just riding alone and i’ve learned to enjoy that alone time. it’s also meant learning to push myself to ride new runs and hit new terrain. if anything, when you’re on the lift with other people, just ask if you can take a few laps with them. or when you’re on unfamiliar and/or challenging terrain and see someone else, ask if you can follow them and maybe you guys will take a couple laps together after.

as far as meeting new people, you just gotta reach out. if all else fails though, just bump some music and ride by yourself. you can ride at your own pace and push yourself whenever you feel ready

At least your friends attempted it. All I get is "fuck no you're crazy. See you at the bottom" sort of response. But ultimately if you wanna ski steeper more difficult stuff you may have to ski alone.... Or radical idea, your friends progress with you and in a year or so they'll be able to ski it.

I feel like I gotta clear up the fact they snowboard and they’ve been riding 10 years longer than I have been, I’m not trying to be a sick or look down on anyone, It’s just hard to match pace with boarders. I need ski homies haha

Lol boarders can rip tho. Getting through technical terrain seems to be a challenge and is a step up on the skill level but I've seen plenty of boarders who can shred 100x better than me.

Don't feel bad. I'm finishing up a 2.5 week ski trip and even when my friends were with me, I ended up skiing most runs alone ?
