Alex Cohn: R.I.P.

My longtime friend, Alex Cohn, died late Sunday night/early Monday morning. He was a senior in high school outside of Boston, MA.

I have been skiing with this kid since 2000 at Bromley, VT. Every time I went home for Xmas vacations, I would get the chance to hang out with him and his brother Zack. We'd ski hard, talk about the state of the ski industry, all the low-down on magazines and movies, pro athletes, equipment, tricks and style.

Alex was as hardcore about freeskiing as anyone out there. He became a subscriber to Freeze and Freeskier magazines during both of their first years out. He had seen Poor Boyz movies long before I ever saw them - think back to Decesare's 'State of Mind' and 'Fade to Black.' He had attended SMS summer camp at Whistler and I think another one at Hood, too.

I was lucky enough to talk to him on the telephone last week. He was telling me how sick the comp was up at Loon Mountain recently. He was super-psyched on how big the jumps were up there.

He attended Mount Snow Academy last year, and he had been accepted to Connecticut College for next year.

His parents Rick and Carol are great parents. They got him hooked on skiing every weekend. They both shred super-hard. His dad teles, while his mom downhills. His brother Zach is a damn good skier, too.

I'm going to miss Alex a lot. My Xmas vacations back at Bromley will never be the same. He always was opinionated about what was going on in the ski world, and that's one thing I appreciated most about him.

Last week he emailed me links to two different videos he and his friends made this winter. One is of his crew sliding the Lake Reponda rail near Mount Snow. The other video is of him and his crew shredding at the Loon competition a couple of weekends ago. Check them out. Everyone is skiing hard and having a great time together - the way skiing should be.

My deepest sympathy to the Kaplan-Cohn family and anyone who got a chance to hang out and ski with Alex.

Alex, we'll miss you.

Wow. This is really sad. I never knew Alex and Zack too well but being fellow Bromley shredders we always used to end up in the same group of freeskiers all the time ripping down Twister->Thruway->Shincracker cliff drop->Lord's Prayer or doing chinese downhill bombing down Runaround. Even though we never really knew each other there was that mutual respect that skiers have for eac other. A damn shame to loose such a great kid at such a young age. Definately will be in my thoughts tomorrow and friday when I'm up at the Sun Mountain tomorrow. RIP Alex.

oh damn poor guy, my mom had that but not the deadly kind, RIP my wishes go out to him and his family, lets all shred one more day for him

wat dude, i just saw that kid skiing up at loon the other day, thats crazy stuff, sorry to hear about it, rip

Wow... my friend was put in the hospital for three months because of that... Man... I'm so sorry for the loss, RIP...

its always a shock when healthy kids just randomly get a virus like that, and one day they're healthy as can be and the next they're in the hospital. I had a friend die of interstitial pnuemonia, I'm still not exactly sure what that is, no one really knew why or how, he just got sick one day. I empathize with you fully dude, the death of a friend is never easy. RIP

i got a friend who lost his leg because of that. seriously, if you go out drinking, partying, whatever, and you wake up with a baning hangover, feel really shitty, and have stiff neck, and it lasts all day, you should think about getting checked. its passed all the time at parties and shit from people using the same cups, tapper, ect. RIP bro

R.I.P. to Alex; let him rest in peace. That must have been so hard for you and your family, as well as his family and others. I feel so bad... On Saturday a 15 yr old girl at my ski club crashed into a tree and died. She was skiing by herself, going too fast. It was crazy, the same day a car got stolen from the parking lot. Believe me, there was sooo many cops and ambulances there, since both incidents happened around the same time (3:00 pm). It was on the news the night, and she got airlifted from our ski club to a major hospital in Toronto, and she was pronounced dead there. :( R.I.P. to all.

rip hombre...this kinda shit sux...last year friend o mine named sam cohn died...probably no relation but any death blows hard...++++ vibes to the family and you
