Alberta/BC stoke & conditions

Nice, wapta should be pretty good. There calling for a "potential" 10cms for Tues Night, that would pretty much be ideal! Have a ton of fun on that one and bag some peaks. Beautiful terrain up that way. I'm headed to do the traverse this April!

I know this thread is for conditions but regionals are dead...

The Lake Louise senior big mountain comp is on tomorrow and Saturday. Super cheap entry and discounted lift tickets. Should be a great time but we could use more people in it, especially snowboarders! Registration ends friday at 8:30am!

After over a decade living around the bonningtons, I finally got around to doing the traverse this week. 7 of us headed out in straight up mid May weather. Hot! (+18 in the valley yesterday when we got to the pub) Skiing was shit, nights were moonless, and two people on the trip were having serious blister issues with their feet. Luckily, I had some friends at the heli lodge near the traverse so I took them to the lodge, grabbed some truck keys off a friend and brought the two down and out. Sucks I didn't get to finish the traverse (missed the last night/day), with the others, but safety and all that shit - the two I got out are getting me drunk for free all weekend so it's not a complete loss.

Also - with a light pack and some sneaky routes, I'm pretty sure I could do the 4 day bonnington traverse in 2. Might go for a redemption solo mission in early April if snow still exists in these parts.

Heading up on Sunday! Hoping this storm brings a little fresh on top.

The plan right now is to head back on Friday after dropping a skier off in Cranbrook, but I might stick around and shred if there is something fun to be skied.

DIStance: 45km

elevation gain: 2500m/8202'

Could probably do er in a big single day!

It has been done in one day, but I don't know if I've got it in me. You can skip the first hut and it cuts distance and vertical off the trip. All the good terrain starts after the first hit anyways.

All I know is that I'm very hungry for a redemption after having to pull the plug to get folks out.

I think il'l be doing it early april if work pans out. just two of us so far. Luke , drail? Don't think extras would hurt.

Im about to send it on a road trip through BC& into Banff area looking for some spring turns. How are conditions up there?? Heard there not great but trying to make the best of it and get out on some good tours& overnight missions. Any beta would be great!!

I could be down. you got set dates yet? If it stays warm and sunny, the first day might not even exist come April. By that, I mean - Day 1 is low elevation logging road for the first 7km, and it was already getting pretty patchy, so come April the road might be driveable. With that though, the first 200M or so of the climb up to Grassy was shitty; low snowpack with dirt patches and alders everywhere.

If that's the case though, you (we) can just skip "day 1" up to Grassy Hut and just stay on the logging road wrapping around Grassy and head straight to Steed Hut. From the trailhead to Grassy is pretty lackluster anyways. I've got a driving course on the 9/10th of April, but besides that I'm free for early April.

A storm just hit the south east/west Kootenays today. Up to 50cm in the Fernie area, up to 40cm in the Nelson/Rossland area. Gonna warm up and get sunny by Tuesday so I'm not sure what the shelf life will be of the snow, but hey - at least it's not raining any more.

26cm at Kicking Horse. Obviously it was a heavy storm but skiing was sweet and should remain decent for a while as temps haven't been too bad up top. It was skiing well before the storm. Lower mountain sucks.

Lake Louise got a little bit of snow too. Icy front and some icy spots on the back. The Horse is skiing a little better but it's worth going there if it warms up everywhere else.

Just Spent 2 days at Fernie, good times loads of snow up high heavy but It is snow so that was rad! Looks like more coming to KH/Louise this weekend. Seems like where back on track for regular precip, hopefully this continues for the rest of the season.

Rmr has seen 21cms in the last 24 with semi reasonable temps. Freezing levels should not exceed 2000m until at least tuesday and we have about 30 ish on the way . The refresh we needed to say the least. It's a shame the valley was so warm this summer. Lots of stuff i wanted to ski just didn't get the temps after Jan. At least the climbing has been pretty good!

FWA was an epic time!

about a meter of snow sunday night with 15-20cm more over the week. So fun

Well, LL comp went poorly haha, fucked up my takeoff on the first air and explosion followed. Good time though and now we finally got some pow in the Lake which is refreshing. Stoked to get my line dialed 100%better for next year.

LL got 15" Yesterday. I ended up bailing on a line attempt at the end of the day. Big full alpine aspect western facing started skiing over the shelf to the fall line. Skied over shale rock right to base for about 50meters. Avy rating was Mod, Mod, Low. with about 45cms of bottomless right to rocky shale I started getting a bad feeling and boot packed back up to my entry point.

Not to mention i'd been punching holes 10cm thick styrofoam on North facing wind burnt rocky mountain sugar shit the day before.

Here's a scary video from Revy posted a few days couple days ago on how fast things happen. Watch the tree and crown on the left side of the video.

Skied Aemmer last week. Conditions have been prime recently if you get out of bed early enough.

Nice Video!! You had the perfect conditions.

I tried skiing Aemmers a couple days ago it was already pouched. Started my approach at 4am. The gullies in the chute made it too sketchy to even consider didn't bother trying to go ^up. Boot packed all the way in from lower paradise car lot made for a long day. I've been wanting to ski it for 3 seasons now; Missed it by a couple of weeks. Regardless I just wanted to go take a look around to really get orientated. Next year for sure.

Thanks. We had a similar experience skiing 3-3.5 Couloir at Moraine Lake at the end of May - some huge runnels. 3-3.5 is wide enough to avoid them so we still went for it and got it done but definitely missed the window of good skiing - we had bulletproof raincrust for the top two-thirds so it was sketchy as fuck.

Anyone been out since the tuesday storm? Moving back to Lake Louise in January, wanna learn this areas backcountry.

Rogers Pass today, didnt go past treeline but found close to 2meters of snow at treeline and good coverage down to about 1500m and decent till about 1300 then its pretty boney but a few storms will fix that.

Heading to Sherbrooke lake to do a little treeskiing tomorrow I'll chuck up a little report on conditions after that!

^^ well sherbrooke lake is a nice place, loads of cool lines to be had with snow, as for today it was pretty shit where we were. shallow n rocky for top half of the line, lower half was decent but still pretty shallow, as is to be expected this time of the year but I had heard reports of over a meter up there! found mostly 60-70cm for the majority of the way down the line. Will head back with more base to ski some of the nice coolies though!

Will be in Rogers pass next 3 days i'll let chall know how it was!

So I'm new to touring and was wondering if anybody wants to go out sometime. Used to work at sunshine and would do the sidecountry out there, but I have a full touring set up and would love to go out with guys who know their way around.

So I know this thread has been pretty dead, and I also know why. Who needs Internet stoke when the skiing is this good?

A November/December to remember. Happy holidays, hope you're spending it in the white room!

Well fucking said, this has been a season opener to remember. Too many good days to count and it's not even the new year yet.

It's not quite touring but here's 30 seconds of fun from Chatter Creek on Christmas Eve:

Holy moly the skiing has been good boys! Just got out of the Asulkan and it was over the shoulder blower the last day.

Here's the first and significantly worse run.
