WASHINGTON — Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

SITE Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Md., monitors the Web site and translated the message.

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

Mark Salter, a senior McCain adviser, said he had heard about the Web site chatter but had no immediate comment.

The message is credited to a frequent and apparently respected contributor named Muhammad Haafid. However, Haafid is not believed to have a direct affiliation with al-Qaida plans or knowledge of its operations, according to SITE.

SITE senior analyst Adam Raisman said this message caught SITE's attention because there has been little other chatter on the forums about the U.S. election.

SITE was struck by the message's detailed analysis _ and apparent jubilation _ about American financial woes.

"What we try to do is get the pulse of the jihadist community," Raisman said. "And it's about the financial crisis."

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden issued a videotape just four days before the 2004 U.S. presidential election directly addressing the American people.

Awesome! McCain/Palin/Al-Qaeda '08!!!!

You probably think that Obama is the candidate of peace. He is probably just as bad as McCain. I wouldn't be surprised if we go into Iran and Pakistan, whether its Obama or McCain thats elected. At least McCain doesn't hide his comfort with warfare. Which is all good reason to elect neither of these two men.

So this is from some "Al-Quaeda supporter" on some internet blog? So I could join that right now and start posting? Credible. What's your point...

This kind of shit is unfortunately true. The CIA acknowledged that the tape that Bin Laden released just before the 04 election where he talked about how terrible Bush is was actually his way of endorsing Bush. He knows that people hate him and therefore he uses it in his favor. What Americans don't understand is that a war in the middle east is actually exactly what Al Queda wants. It's the only environment where they can compete against a superpower like the US and ultimately they don't care about death, because if they die fighting they'll go to heaven and get all their virgins. Al Queda just wants chaos which is difficult for rational people to understand.

i dearly hope you're not trying to slander McCain with this shit. because if so, this would put you on the same level as the people calling Obama a terrorist.

exactly, the huffington post? WTF? plus this is such an ass backwards idea by this "al quaeda" person... who is the crazy right winger terrorist killer? that'd be MR McCain.... so let me get this straight, the terrorist endorse the terrorist killer? whoa now! there's a twist!

Clearly this article is above the reading comprehension level of you guys...i should have known better...

Thanks....maybe these guys will read/think about it now that it has a fancy news network beside it.

Fuck

That's highly ironic.

I seem to remember the opposite happening in Madrid. The right-wing leaning successor to president Aznar, Mariano Rajoy, was set to win the election. He supported continuing Spain's war effort in the middle east, in addition to mounting strong anti-terrorist measures within the borders of Spain. Al Quaida sets bombs on trains 3 days before the election back in 04.

The socialist Zapatero wins the election due to the bombings, Spain loses its backbone. I'd say the example set by history contradicts any bullshit reported in the huffington post.

How about we cut the bullshit looking at "al quaida blogs" and listen to a real interview made on a leader of a terrorist organization, endorsing Barack Obama of course.

I stopped posting my opinion because all you (Liberals) just call me stupid, but then Justin comes along, says the same exact thing and you guys somewhat respect him. I'm over it. I'm not going to cry. I can make fun of my party. I already voted. It's all good. I already know who's going to win anyway.

see, us respecting justin has very little to do with your opinions, and a lot to do with how you express them. just throwin that out there.

And for the record, that video is over-dramatic. The only part of importance is the interview with Ahmed Yousef, I couldn't find any others with only the interview portion.

Ya, I guess you must be way smarter than I am. Well, since I had already read this from that exact Washington post link, I knew that the guy who wrote that statement in that blog website has no affiliation with Al-Quaeda whatsoever. Essentially his post means absolutely nothing to me, and the news about it is stupid. I said nothing about the website you cited as a source...

You complain about a story posted in the Huffington Post AND the Washington post and they cite Fox news as a REAL source?

Right on buddy...your SUPER credible with that post.

Hahahaha

I suppose citing a Hamas Adviser verbally stating his endorsement for Obama is not credible, mainly because it was shown on Fox News. Perhaps if MSNBC had shown it I would have more credibility, damn.

Allow me to sift through some terrorist blogs to find more credible sources. I'll report back later with my findings in my column at the washington post.

go down in flames? wtf?

well maybe al-qaeda is doing this to have people support obama cuz they dnt want to support terrorism and then his buddy obama gets elected.... oohhhh what now

Gee, do you think just maybe terrorists have ulterior motives when they make statements pertaining to political candidates? I mean, I for one don't buy it. I have a long-standing practice of taking terrorists at their word, and it's served me well in the past. Seriously, the only thing to do with this fringe bullshit, on either side, is to ignore it.

Do you really think its a negative thing that Hamas backs Obama? They are tired of the US fucking shit up over there with senseless invasions (its not a war, get over yourselves) and McCain wants to hang out for another 100 years. Is that too much for you to comprehend?

If the US was in Canada fucking shit up and Dion/Harper/Layton/Ducepette/May didn't support the candidate that said he wanted to stay here for 100 years, I'd be backing them too.

Get your head out of your ass. The middle east if not your militaries playground and the people over there are fucking tired of you.

I dont think that the previous example of Spain's election being swayed by terrorism applies to this situation.

The US is seen as an aggressor and pure enemy, not a country that is slowly turning Muslim, like most countries in Europe (Check out the rise of Islam in France recently, its an interesting and provocative trend) and could later be friendly and sympathetic. Homeland versus homeland in this case.

Its also very interesting to consider the possibility of a terrorist attack so close to the election. It would undoubtedly swing the tide in favor of McCain (be that a message about irrational and stupid voters). In my opinion, having McCain as president would ensure that the US stays in these regions fighting the un-winnable war, and would give these fundamentalist groups the continued precense of a tangible enemy that kills your goats with mortars, steps all over your traditions and bombs your country. (Not saying that our presence in these regions is entirely bad, but just that the army is a heavy hand, and any occupying force does this). Its much easier to recruit people to fight against the enemy when the enemy is at your doorstep rather than half the world away.

This is not to say that Obama would do the exact opposite of McCain and pull us out of the conflict, saving lives and bringing world peace. I'd doubt that very much. But McCain is much more military driven for ultimate resolution, and would 'fight hard against the enemy', rather than seek diplomatic means. Hes absolute. McCains presidency would ensure another 4 strong years of recruits to spread the message and kill Americans.

Frankly, I'm surprised we havent seen a homegrown terrorist attack to swing the election yet. There are fundamentalists in both democratic and republican parties, and all it would take to ensure certain victory would be a overzealous McCain supporter setting off a car bomb in Times Square. So close to the election, the results of the investigation and the arrests of the perpetrators would be far after all the votes have been cast. Scary to think about the sheeplike tendency of this nations people.

One of my friends two doors down has a pendant that a local Iraqi man gave him as a gift, thanking him for keeping his family safe with his daily patrols. Baghdad is safer than Philadelphia right now (no joke, crazy huh?), and the people there are extremely grateful. As for how much longer we should stay before handing it over to the Iraqi's to manage by themselves, I honestly don't know what would be best. There are pros and cons on both sides, but the voice of the Iraqi people is rarely heard and I think that should be the biggest thing we consider. Not the voice of Americans and Canadians who would like more money in the bank, but the people who are actually directly affected by it: the people of Iraq and the men and women over there (Canada has people there too, don't kid yourselves I work with one) who are doing their job to keep those people safe. As far as broad politics go, it's a shit show all around and no one will be happy with the outcome either way.

Is it too much to comprehend that you take the 100 years remark completely out of context. McCain meant a presence similar to the one we still have in Korea (omg! 58 years in Korea!). Its similar to how republicans take Obama's 57 states comment out of context. So I guess I cannot comprehend that you cannot comprehend this fact, so we find ourselves in comprehension limbo.

By your same logic, the middle east is not the Jews' "playground" either. Therefore everyone in Israel should pack up and leave because "the people over there are tired of the Jews". Hamas' only concern is the complete annihilation of Israel, therefore (by your logic) they are justified in hating the US (Israel's chief ally) and commiting terrorist acts against innocent Israelis. The most beneficial outcome of the US election for Hamas is the one that makes Israel and the US worse off. Does that make enough sense to you?

He still hasn't figured out that I was obviously talking about the person who wrote the supportive post being a nobody, not the newspaper. The guy who supposedly supports McCain has no relation to Al-Qaeda other than the fact that he says he supports them.

It is very interesting. Personally, I think these "peace loving" Europeans will eventually turn to highly nationalistic forms of government, as well as the people themselves becoming much more nationalistic in nature. Just look at the recent developments in Austria, and to a much greater extent in Russia.

anyone remember in the 2004 election when Al queda said that if people voted for bush, they would have an attack on the US cause they wanted kerry to be elected to get us out of iraq?

My memory is fuzzy on that one, so sorry if thats wrong.

But we basically have the war won in iraq, and it shouldnt be much longer.

These terrorists wont stop until we kill them all. I want a president that can fuck these bitches up.

Look, I don't want to sound conceited here, but my post above really should've been /thread. I don't understand why a bunch of people (who aren't unintelligent, moreover) are wasting their time arguing about this garbage.

I agree entirely actually. Ryno posted a ridiculous article about how some crazy Arab wrote a blog on some website. It should be left at that. The article is pointless, therefore the thread is as well.

oh for surrrrrreee, that's the #1 issue I am voting on this november as well.
Energy? Economic policy? Healthcare? Education? Foreign Policy? fuck all that boring crap, doesn't mean shit if we can't "fuck bitches up."

Especially interesting is the recent comment of Biden, that Obama will be tested and people need to stand behind him even if they disagree initally. Many people are seeing that as a hint that Obama will not back Israel if a strike from Iran would occur, and, if Hamas reads it the way many have in America, he is going to see this as a green light and hope Obama moves in to the White House.

To be fair, the israelis would love to see the muslims of the area wiped out as well. They both fucking hate each other, and neither one is right.

you want to stop them you better kill them all, and then kill everyone that has even heard the word terrorist to truly stop them. Good luck with that

Jesus...I didnt post this to say "HEY I SUPPORT TERRORISTS AND I THINK THEY ARE AWESOME"....it was just a news topic I figured would be interesting to talk about considering a) that this kind of statement has effected elections in other countries and b) the US media outlets are notorious for blowing the most rediculous shit out of proportion (for both sides).

Think people...we dont need to get in a huge e-yelling match on here. And I'm not a terrorist, dispite what some of you may think

article isn't pointless at all, al qaeda has already made it evident they are wiling to fight this war another 50-100 years. Obviously they want McCain because he is willing to waste as much time there as possible in order to try to kill these fucks in a environment where they already have the upper hand. I don't even want to know what would happen if something happened to McCain and Palin takes over.

but at least she can see Russia from her house in alaska...

i sense sarcasm....

I put it in terms that didnt stress how serious national security is. All the other shit doesn't matter if we have terrorists blowing up nukes in the middle of new york city now does it. National security at this point in time is key. Our oceans cant protect us as much anymore.

wait, so the war against the terrorists is impossible and we should give up. good plan.

We jsut need to take out the key leaders of al queda. once the oranization(and other organizations) are weak, they will start to fail, and we can start to take out terrorist training camps. Stop the major organizations...stop most terrorism.

Can you even imagine what would be going on air at fox news if something like this was found but instead for Obama? hahahahahhaha

haven't you noticed that any time somebody posts something remotely related to the election, shit goes insane? i mean come on Ryno, you can't tell me you didn't expect a bomb to go off in this thread, whether or not you wanted it to happen. we're talking about NS here.

hey..i know this is kinda off topic.. but i'd like to call anyone out who is honestly interested in issues and policies to discuss the serious shortcomings of this year's election..unfortunately this might require you to not be a fan of either candidate.. anyways anyone interested in discussing this?
