Al Gore Shares Nobel Peace Prize With UN Panel

Why would they cripple the US?  He wants us to spend large amounts of money to improve our energy technology and help the US become a leader in environmental responsibility.  The US has been hugely successful over the past hundred years largely because of technological innovation.  By funding these programs, not only would we be gaining desperately needed respect in the eyes of the world, but we would also be able to profit off the technologies created by research.

This article is a lengthy but comprehensive argument for how funding green research will benefit the US economically:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/15/magazine/15green.t.html

Hey all you Conservatives out there.  Just to put it out there.  Why are you so UN-Conservative when it comes to using energy?  Irony?  You fucking hypocrites.

I saw an article in the paper the other day about a mother in the UK taking his movie to court because she believed it was wrong to show only one side of the debate to the children in school and tell them that that video is the facts. The court found 11 inaccuracies in his video, the very foundations of his video which support his "evidence". The court then ruled that his movie must be shown as a political movie to students, and not as a science movie. If it was shown as a science movie, it would be in violation of Political Indoctornation (sp). I'm too lazy to find an article online right now so google it or something.

If you are arguing that he isn't hypocritical because he runs his mansion off of solar power, then you have completely missed the point in the first place and it seems his movie wasnt all that effective.

Why does he have a mansion in the first place? The point is not to curb pollution, but to prevent it in the first place. How much more energy do you think went into building his home? How much more consumption of natural resources was done?

His plane: Is first class not respectable enough anymore? He clearly has the money to afford it, but he is zipping around the world enjoying the comforts that only the elite get.

Good for him and using solar electricity. If he was truly what he makes himself out to be, why doesnt he get himself a smaller house, say 5 times smaller, and use his solar energy to now provide for 5 other houses. Why doesnt he still plant trees without having to take a private jet around the world.

Why is doesnt he put his home in a more accessible location? Accessibility, or lack thereof, is one of the utmost factors contributing to emissions.

While his message is obviously good, there is no need to applaud him for it and he definitely deserves no award. To go with the murderer analogy- If a murderer tells you that murdering is bad, do you listen? Yes, of course you do. Do you then give him a high five and a weekend in Vegas...?

The man is a hypocrite, plain and simple.

In a way it does,,, who is he to tell us to change our lifestyles yet he doesnt do it himself....if he is not changing himself than it must not be that important and everything is bogus.

Again, no. Not polluting IS a good thing, regardless of whether or not he continues to pollute. Also, im very sure that whatever he is doing to the environment, he is clearly trying to offset it. He is a main proponent and user of carbon credits.

Parkboy......

First of all who said you had to be a conservative to think that Gore

is a hypocrite. Second, who said that just because some one may be

conservative that they have to have all the same views on every issue.

Also, no one has really stated their own opinion on conserving energy,

rather most people have just been talking about whether or not Gore is

wrong. You don't have to be pro- saving energy to have an opinion on

the issue.

As I said before, if you are doubting the validity of the Nobel Fucking Peace Prize, you are a fucking retard.

SO because you said so that makes it a fact...HMM nope sorry look at recent winners and tell me it isnt political the fact that GORE won has its own altierior motives in itself. Anyways please tel me why in your opinion the nobel peace prize hasnt becoming meaningless, while citing winners such as arafat or Anon. Im listening?

Al gore is a fucking idiot, I hope he doesnt decide he wants to run for president.

Apparently he thinks a carbon tax will somehow stop global warming. too little too late, the damage has already been done.

please, i dont understand why everyone thinks Gore just has this alterior motive to trick us all into voting for him in some yet undeclared position that he may run for...   its all rather silly.  gore is the only reason half our country even knows what global warming is, or gives a shit about what it is.  regaurdless of whether he is a hypocrite, he still did a lot of good for this world.  I dont see why everyone has to hate on that.

simply put, gore wants to be ecofriendly

and non ecofriendliness is just gonna eventually lead to no snow.

don't you all care about snow?!

Offset it with what carbon credits???? Those things are a waste. Please if you believe that than it is no wonder you buy into the propaganda that he spewes. Carbon credits do not make sence at all.

Planting trees makes sense... And it's a start. Dude, all im saying is that just because someone is an apparent hypocrite doesn't make his message invalid.

Im not saying certain ppl didn't deserve it, but Gore is not one of them. If you wanna believe Arafat was a proponent for peace, fine i wont argue with you because it would be pointless!

Also if you really need Al Gore to make up facts and statistics to know what the hell global warming is then you clearly are a moron to begin with.

Im not sayin hes a bad person but the fact still remains we don't know jack shit about the causes of global warming, or at least not enough to go campaigning on it! But like I say if thats his thing great but everybody isd like o he should run for president...ON WHAT GROUNDS?

Thanks for that. I tend to think that the UN panel who did, oh what's the word, a critical evaluation based on ALL EVIDENCE EVER on the subject knows the hell it's talking about.

Gore fudges some parts of his movie, he definitely overreacts (such as with Katrina) and uses a lot of stage magic to drive his point home, but there is solid evidence for global warming happening. And, might i add, i'd say it's a good bet that all of the crap we throw up there and all of our livestock has a teensy weensy impact on the Earth.

Even IF humans had shit all to do with global warming, offsetting our carbon emissions and moving towards a greener society is by ALL means a GREAT thing. Given that this message is central to what Gore says, and given the fact that human populations are starting to suffer extremely in this polluted, overpopulated hunk of space rock, i'd say it's commendable for a movie such as this to raise awareness in the general population about what we are doing to the Earth, even if this doesn't directly correlate to the warming we are seeing.

I don't agree with everything Gore says in the movie, and i think that global warming must, if anything, be part of a natural process that we are exacerbating. But if his movie and spiel does anything to get the world to be a less wasteful, more fuel efficient place, then damned if im gonna support it.

It makes his theory look pretty weak if you ask me

Look here at this snopes(Very legit source) article

http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/house.asp

Driving a lincoln navigator doesn't help his case either.

Unless he lives in a 900 square foot apartment and bikes to work or uses public transit he shouldn't be telling me how to live my life when it comes to energy consumption. I have looked over the facts and I find climate change to be a natural yet unstoppable force of nature. When has the earth not been cooling or warming? and don't give me that "well the ice is melting too fast" bullshit because after the last ice age the average world tempurature increase by 16 degrees in 50 years.

http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=248

not the source of the 16 degree change i was looking for right now but still legit.(I had an academic website I used in citing sources for that fact last year)

siiigh.

Im not arguing that he isn't a hypocrite. Im saying it's illogical to throw away everything he says because he's a hypocrite.

Done.

Thats reasonable but still when someone tells me something like that and they act like they don't even have faith in their theory then why should I buy into it?

It does make it invalid if you look at the science and the fact that there is no real proof that humans are the cause of global waring aaaand if he is not leading by example.

What part of his message are we to believe and follow if he is not following his own preachings and there is no proof behind what he is saying.

This gets all real tricky here because if we start following what he is saying then the next thing you know they are trying to raise taxes(as mentioned above) and take control of your life (ie:by telling you what to drive and what light bulbs to buy)so that you dont ''destroy the planet" when there is no real proof that what we are doing is destroying the planet.

I am for cleaning up water and reducing waste. I don't personally spew alot of c02 to my knowledge. But I don't refrain from spewing just because Al gore said so. I personally think there are other problems that we can actually STOP. I dont think its our fault. I dont think that we can stop it even if it is partially our fault. If I thought we could stop it I would be all for that because I love skiing like the air I breathe. I guess the move to go green might personally benefit me because my dad has a part in on an ethanol plant but idk.

Actually, that we are, we are the cause of global waring.

Oh wait, sorry :P

Look, i don't see why everything has to be black and white here. Weather is a complex natural process. There is strong evidence that the Earth is actually going through a warming phase. This is due to the natural cycle, of course. BUT, we, as a species who changes the Earth by it's presence (just check out desertification, if dams weren't obvious enough), and emits a ton of greenhouse gases, are also a likely contributor to global warming. And insofar that we are a contributor, we can do something to alleviate what we are doing.

We obviously are not THE cause of global warming, but it would seem logical that what we are doing isn't helping, and possibly even hurting. In which case, it's good that we cut back, just in case.

Oh God, heaven forbid anyone tell you shouldn't drive an SUV and that you should use energy saving bulbs. Commies! Fascists! Whatever entity that keeps me from my inalienable right as an American to own whatever the bloody hell i want!

Gore most likely isn't going to run for an office (at least in 08). He is a leftist propaganda machine. Supplying democrats in congress and most likely hillary in 08 the fuel they need to begin taking away liberties and freedoms of the people. It could start small but if the current global warming trend continues it will lead to emissions taxes, government fuel rationing, and other intrusions into your lifestyle. Do you really want the government telling you how much you can drive? How bright the lights in your house can be? How warm your house can be?

Taxes will also increase tenfold as the government funds alternative energy programs instead of letting the private sector handle the research and development of fuels that will work because. Now why can the private sector create a better alternative fuel than the public sector? The answer is simple; the profit motive. The liberal answer to the fuel crisis will be to create a beuracracy to develop an alternative fuel. This government entity will use all possible funds. After it's research time expires they will say they need more time and money; these people dont want to lose their jobs do they? If you leave it up to the private sector they will create a more efficient product as fast as possible, racing to beat their competitors to the prize. The prize of profit. The engineers will want to get it done for the profit which could include bonuses, salary increase, royalties, and promotions.

Cliff notes: I can't believe you are to lazy to read 2 paragraphs. Gore is a propaganda machine. Liberals want to tax us and take away our personal liberties. Alternative fuel research need to be left up to the private sector if you want real results that are affordable.

And to Devor; Lets hope he runs as an independent to take away some of Hillary's votes in 08

Almostaskier.....please read this guys thread, istead of making some comment about not driving an SUV look at the real issues at hand here and what it will mean to you or all of us for that matter.

Pretty much sums it up right here.

Fuck, please look past your political opinions for a minute here. The Nobel Prize was awarded not JUST to Gore, it was to the entire IPCC as well. Regaurdless of his political stance, he has done more good for the Earth. He's been a proponent and unwavering voice for lowering the pollution we create, and who cares if we're causing global warming or not, LESS POLLUTION IS A GOOD THING. He's not winning the award because of his movie, or because of his personal lifestyle, which is still less wasteful than the vast majority of people with his money and power. He has done good, and the award is just. If you want to debate his policies and stance on global warming, fine, but none of that has anything to do with the reason why he got the award.

And if you really want to call into question the validity of the Nobel Peace Prize due to its recent winners, honestly, go fuck yourself, you're an asswich.

Theres no real proof for many things in science, lots of what we 'know' is really our best guess. It seems as of this moment, that there is somewhat of a consensus that we as a species are affecting the weather on this planet in some way. What we do is a small part of the actual input that goes into our Earths climate cycle, and how much, we really dont know. We have no idea how weather really works or how the Earths climate is really controlled. Basically, we're shitting into a pool that we dont know the size of. Eventually we're going to start to smell the results of our actions - we just dont know what we're dealing with.

If you really need proof that we're polluting the planet, man, I dunno, maybe just like, look with your face? I really dont want to have to bring up all that shit again, but since you asked, check out wikipedia on the Aral Sea and the Dead Zones in the Gulf of Mexico for a start. What we do can have massive effects on our environment.

So while we're wildly speculating, President Romney will destroy the Alaskan wilderness, run our country up so high in debt our stock market will crash and let corporations run amok polluting and poisoning animals and humans with their waste. This is fun!

Come on, stop trying to make this a partisan issue. Its not dems vs republicans, its do you want to live in a clean world or a dirty one. Some people apparently like filth (my roommates for example), but the vast majority of us would rather have trees than smokestacks and prefer air that doesnt give our children asthma and respiratory diseases. You can have your cake and eat it too in my opinion - going green and promoting green technologies will create new jobs and industries, keep the air we breath clean, stop our dependence on imported fuels and energy and generally make this world a better place to live. If our government actually decides to be eco-friendly, I really doubt the anarchy you predict will come. The most that would happen would be to reverse the ridiculous cutbacks and incentives given to companies to help 'promote our economy' and use more fuels. As for what the government should do to promote green technology, hell if I know, I'm not a specialist in that field and that work is better cut out for someone else.

Green technology has been proven over and over to be feasible and cheaper in the long run - it just takes a little more dedication and commitment, not necessarily more money. The government is not going to go 'leftist' if it incorporates it, thats fucking ridiculous.

Question one; why do you say Romney will run our country in debt or cause a stock market crash?

Question two; Why do you call my prediction anarchy? It is nothing but socialism.

I am all about cleaner fuels and cleaning the environment but we need to keep the government in check with their role in our lives.

Question 1 answer: he was wildly speculating, like you were.

Question 2 answer: that's bullshit. I lived in Sweden, THE socialist model, and im sorry, but the government doesn't tell the people how much to drive, what bulbs to use, or any of that junk. You were wildly speculating.

You were making wild speculations, I felt I should join in with some more.

Keeping the government in check is a valid argument, I agree. However, in its current state, the US government has been far from being eco-friendly. Its actively supporting the same industries that are making us dependent of foreign energy, and ignorantly sidestepping incentives to the technologies that will solve the problem and improve our environment in the same step. Would I be worried if the government started rationing lightbulbs? Yes, but I doubt having even a minimal 'green' policy will lead to anything like this. It would take a lot to get to anywhere like the situation you describe, and its foolish to believe that we'd be there eventually just by supporting a environmentally wise policy. Lets get the government back to being neutrally eco-friendly before worrying over that. That in it of itself will be enough of a challenge with this administration.

you are reading into my statements to much. i was simply stating the extreme of government energy regulation

Why'd you feel the need to state the extreme if its obviously not going to happen? Kinda seems like you're spreading politically motivated misinformation if you knowingly did that. Should I perhaps now liken the average republican's environmental views to a certian Hoggish Greedly?

Image:Hoggish.gif

Please show me in the constitution where you have an inalienable right to consume endlessly and wastefully?

GASP! Government will start telling me what to do! I won't be able to get the car I want, i won't be able to get the bulbs I want!

I mean, it's bad enough that the government forces car manufacturers to make cars with seatbelts and other safety things to some sort of norm of security! Plus, now im FORCED to wear the damned thing! My inalienable right as an American to NOT wear a belt while i drive has been infringed upon! I demand the variety!

Dude, this isn't the cold war, i don't know what misconstrued notion of socialism you have, but trust me, if the government were to do anything, it would be to impose changes in car manufacturing and such to make everything overall cleaner. It ain't free enterprise, but socialism it ain't. What's next, you'll be complaining you don't have your inalienable right to choose a gas guzzling behemoth that no other human being on the face of the earth has ever needed over a fuel efficient station wagon...

You lived in Sweden eh! But I bet you didnt have to pay their %50 plus tax rate. That socialist model comes at a high high price. Maybe you are to young to understand, but when the govenrment starts taking your money to fund these ECo friendly projuects, maybe you will be as skeptical as i am.....or mayby not:)

This global warming shit is so over rated and over analyzed its pathetic. You can't have a debate on the topic anymore without any form of bias. I have done plenty of reading on the subject on my own time and I'm not even going to get into this debate. Al Gore pisses me off even though I live in Canada. When I told him what I thought of global warming, his reaction was priceless:

an-asshole-and-i.jpg

The taxes are exorbitant, but those who ARE paying 50% of their wealth in taxes can more than afford it. You may know that it goes in a curve. Also, they reap the benefits as well as everyone else, let me count those...

_ FREE health care for anyone up to 18 years, then a flat 10 bucks per visit for anything, and no more than 1000 bucks MAXIMUM for ANYTHING, be it cancer or spinal surgery. And it's pretty damn good at that, long waits, but the doctors know how to help you.

_ Government subsidies out the wazoo... !50 bucks a month to each student for schooling costs, free food paid for you by your town for the whole school year, they'll fund your trips and a ton of stuff like that. This subsidy goes through the roof when you get into college, then on to grad school, so much that some kids can pay for their lives purely with it. Oh, and did i mention college and grad school is free? If you want t work in sweden, that's a damn sweet deal.

The government, once you're a citizen there, is a really good friend.

Yeah, Sweden is certainly failing as a country with their system. I mean everyone has healthcare, they have some of the highest standards of living and some of the best doctor per x patient ratios in Europe. Yep, its a failure.
