AK backcountry?

Hey all. New to Alaska, just wondering where the best spots and where people recommend hiking at for some good backcountry snow?

also... i live in the wasilla/palmer area so looking for places within couple hrs of there. When the snow comes I just wanna shred some deep snow!

Hatchers is probably the easiest place for you to get to if your close to palmer.

Be smart and brush up on your avy stuff before winter.

OK. thanks people. where is thompson pass at? I've heard turnagain gets some of the best snow to... hatchers would be convenient, i'm sure i'll be checkin that out as soon as theres enough snow

Most years hatchers trumps turnagain, less people and more are to spread out. If you have a sled hatcher p and buffalo mine are the tits. I'm selling one if you're interested. But last year hatcher p was shit, only had like an 18" base. Thompson pass is just befor Valdez, about 4 hours from you.

Yeah, Turnagain is always crowded as hell. Most people who go to Hatchers seem to stick to the road run for some reason... Probably convenience. But that leaves plenty of untracked powder for the rest of us. Like Logan said, a sled is worth investing in if you haven't got one, otherwise you'll be doing a lot of bootpacking.

yeah man! Actually been thinking about a sled... what you got and a price? Need something that will get me away from the road

how about the places in between anchorage and fairbanks, like rainbow or sunshine or whatever its called? my daddieo got a sled this year so im looking to check out some new places.

and to the OP, hatcher pass is the tits, should be skiable pretty soon. Also, whittier is pretty sick, just the mountains around there.

Yepyep. We had a couple inches at our house (Palmer Fishhook and Wasilla Fishhook intersection area) over the weekend and earlier part of the week. I've been staying in Anchorage the past couple of days, so I'm not sure what it's like now. When it was raining in Anchorage earlier in the week, it was snowing in the valley, so hopefully that means Hatchers is getting dumped on right now. I'll know by tonight and update.

just seeing if anyones been out? does hatchers have enough to shred yet? I just got back from a vacation so not up to date as far as mountain snow but it looks good out there!

so i went up to hatchers today... not much snow yet up that way. If turnagain has all this snow could someone tell me where you guys ski along there. I'd probly go hit it up ASAP. just wanna ride!

Just head towards girdwood then past it into the pass. There will be a spot on te left where the shoulder gets wider and you're sure to see cars parked. That's tincan. If you get to a spot with a huge parking lot and shitters on the right, you've gone just barely too far.
