Aise your hand if you've had shoulder surgery

I've had a nagging shoulder injury for about 6 years now, which has caused me countless subluxes and a dislocation this year in addition to the humiliation of having to throw from the elbow like a girl. Finally got a proper MRI done on it and have been told the ligament damage is serious and have been strongly recommended to get it fixed surgically. I just don't know when I can afford to take the 6 month recovery time off of sports. My kayaking season is as important to me as my ski season, arguably more important because i make a good amount of money in the summer as a guide and instructor. So who's had shoulder surgery? Experiences, thoughts, recommendations? How conservative of an estimate is 6 months recovery?

here you can see my ripped tendons and cartilage and the screws and suchers i dont know how to spell those things

Whenever I fall semi hard on my shoulder, it pops out and back in, and gives me the weirdest feeling. It feels like all of the blood in my shoulder gets boiling hot and runs down my arm.

Just had arthroscopic surgery on mine to repair a torn labrum and some ligament damage. I dislocated it for the first time in February and decided it would be a good idea to get an MRI and talk to a surgeon. After a lot of thought and talking to friends with shoulder problems both who had surgery and who hadn't, I decided to just have the surgery now and hopefully avoid the repeated dislocations and problems. Surgery was quick (took less than an hour) and I was out of the sling after a week. It was about 3 days on painkillers being high out of my mind and completely worthless.

Now at 5 weeks its feeling really good. I went skiing for the first time last week. I have good range of motion except for over my head and I can use my arm for everything except lifting heavy stuff. Next week I start physical therapy and start building back strength. Hopefully just a couple months and I'll be 100%.

If you are thinking about getting the surgery, I would definately say get it done. A few months out is worth it to not have to worry about it popping out all the time. Skiing just wouldn't be fun for me if I was always worrying about hurting my shoulder. If you don't have surgery, the recovery time each time you hurt it will add up to way more time out then just getting the surgery. Plus you are pretty much guaranteed to get pussy when your in a sling. Best of luck!

Also 6 months is pretty conservative. Depends on the surgery though and how much they have to fix. At 5 weeks, I'm able to ski, ride a bike, even shoot guns. I was told 3 months before it would be back to 100%.

ive had 3 shoulder surgeries... the first two were arthroscopic, and recovery was super fast..i was skiing in like 4 or 5 weeks. but i hardly fell hard and it started regularly dislocating again. i had a full blown reconstructive done where they basically put anchors in and remade a shoulder socket and made it a lot tighter... its been two years since and ive yet to dislocate (cross your fingers) but recovery for that one was 4-5 months and extremely (emphasize extremely) painful. whatever you do, if docs give you options...dont skimp and go with the easiest and quickest operation... it may cost you a little recovery time now, but it will save you a lot of pain and dissapointment in the future.

by the way..... i got a pretty gnarly scar from my last one...from the very top of my shoulder to my armpit. its good for making up stories haha. good luck man hope everything works out.

I had a surgery after 10+ dislocations a few years ago. Luckily at that

time I had full insurance coverage and everything was taken care of

including PT, plus I had a great surgeon who put five pins in to

tighten the joint. It's been strong ever since.

Since I didn't have to pay for it, it was much better than dislocating my shoulder randomly while sitting up in bed.
