Afton Alps, Minnesota

Hey friends! As we approach the ski season and my second year as a freeskier, I'm excited to see what Vail Resorts is planning to do with the Afton Alps terrain park. Any fellow Minnesotans have an inside scoop?

Regionals. There's a bunch of info in there, and vail has posted pictures of what they're going to make it. Two rope tows, and some other things.

They sent out the terrain park layout a while ago. lView attachment 653075

They also sent all the season pass owners from last year a new hill map. They have expanded the nordica (or what ever the racing thing is) Took out chairlift 1 (I think). Two sets of towropes, or t-bars.

Afton is going to be the shit this year.

Are you serious? That's dope.

Some of their rails were a little beat up last year, and their boxes are shit I'm sorry

As a full time Granite Peak skier, I can't wait to see how Afton will compare to Granite (Which is the gold standard for the Midwest in my mind)

Well it looks like I bought a season pass to the wrong fuckin place... Now I gotta go ski at some resort with those high speed lifts and sick rails and jumps instead of getting to go to afton which has no high speed lifts and I don't think anyone on aftons staff skis... Cause all of their landings for their jumps are shit. They have way too steep of slopes, so you have to be going the perfect speed to hit the landing. The biggest gap they have is barely 40', so that's shit as well.

I dunno, with Snow Park Technologies managing it I think we'll see a huge improvement. Granite has much longer runs though

Yes, their landings were nice and long, but they were too steep compared to the kicker. Especially the last one. wayyyyy too steep. they were nice though

I heard that SPT is just building it to start with and that Afton is going to have to maintain it. In which case, the whole thing could go to shit. I will be going a couple times, but I think Granite will still be #1, the runs are longer. What other hill in the Midwest can you hit a four jump line with a 45fter, and than into a rail run with over 20 jibs in it

Totally agree^ I went to afton 4 times last season and their maintenance team sucks!!! Sure they have some good runs with over 40 mph speeds, but their lifts are slow and kill your legs after riding just a couple times. The best part of afton is the number of chalets.

Exactly. Afton has small jumps and the matinance team is gonna fuck up the landings, they always do. The only part about afton that is better than granite is the new rope tow and tbar.

I actually prefer Granite 6 man high speed. I mean I would like a rope tow for the big jump and one in the rails, but it's so nice to lap for days on the chair lift and it's a quick 1:30 ride up the hill. Not bad at all!

I like the same thing you like. We should get a new thread goin and try to get granite to put in a rope tow or something right before the season starts.

I've talked to Wyatt multiple times about this and there are a couple reasons why they can't. 1.) Insurance

2.) Space

3.) Against the law to add new tow ropes? Someone told me that you can no longer buy new tow ropes. Ski hills that have them can still keep them, but you can't add new ones now?

You obviously don't come to Granite very much to know how stingy the owners are... We never get to do fun things like preseason or post season skiing because they have to leave the hill from the state. Also the prices are outrageous. It's the best place though, hands down. I wish they would get a t-bar. That would be so sick

That orrrrrrr, get a bunch of strippers to make it rain on the owner while he baths in his piles of money he makes off of visiting families from such places as Pakistan. (He owns Granite Peak and Lutsen)
